  • I'm from Duluth, born and raised. Yes, for people that don't know, Duluth has an African American community. Of course, I'm not proud of what happened to these men, but I am very happy that the memorial has not been tampered with by anyone to this date. I've never even seen a piece of trash at the memorial.

Love everyone. People are people, black or white.

  • It sound like every body on here is trying to bash my race and i will die befor I let that Shit happen I'm proud to be black and I'm proud of all my leaders and to you slow fucks USA ain't yours this Shit belongs to the Native Americans since you wanna talk history

  • 96Z24 I'm from Duluth to and for u to be calling them beast u sound real racist and u don't no the truth ether to be talking like you sound like the beast and last I check the beast was the mark of the devil and it sound like you and the mob that did that is the devils

  • I never knew Duluth had so many African Americans

  • I'm from Duluth and I always knew it was more to this story I hate how they where all in the photo while the bodies was still hanging

  • There is a difference between being hanged and being lynched. A Lynching is done by a murderous mob of cowards, who don't care if the people being lynched are guilty or not. He's Black, they are Caucasion and they have a half ass excuse and enough people to hide amoungst, to get away with murder. It still happens today, but secretly, at night in the woods to innocent Blacks, who have been kidnapped. The bodies are weighted down and thrown into rivers or burned in bonfires. Yes, even in 2011.

  • Not unusual. There is a book titled,"100 years of Lynching". Nothing but newspaper articles reporting lynchings, in gruesome detail. It happened often and Black People were not just hung but quite often tortured first. It's America's oldest tradition and is still in practice. If Republicans get thier way, it will once again be popular.

  • what has this got to do with the EDMUND FITZGERALD sinking ??

  • @MisterBCbudman probably their Ties to Duluth

  • This could, and would happen today. If someone were accused of rape, especially of being a child molester, I'm sure you could get them lynched in a public street, and have moms, female college students, grammas, men, and children, people of all political backgrounds, all edging into the photo to smile next to the dead child molester they lynched. It doesn't happen in the USA now, only because law enforcement protects prisoners better after Lee Harvey Oswald was embarrassingly shot on live TV.

  • To listen to the claims in stories about old lynchings, one would think everybody who was lynched was innocent. One would conclude that the rape of whites by blacks is something that just began recently.

  • From Duluth, and I was part of that rally, I am white, however I have black family, and it appalls and disgusts me that there was this spot on our history, which isn't the only one. However I have seen the monument resurrected to honor the men and still cannot say it repairs anything except for any current living family members reliving the past. They stormed this jail with no where to go, trapped. Terrible. Had I been alive back then, I would have done something to stop it, even die trying.

  • @96Z24 Also, gonorrhea takes awhile to show symptoms after the initial contact which places her a few months before the alleged rape happened at the John Robinson Circus grounds. A doctor also examined "the beast" Max Mason later while he was in prison, and he concluded that he never had gonorrhea in the first place but was an easy scapegoat being the shortest of those who were arrested.

  • @midgetsoprano06 The STD was only found well after the lynchings. A month, from my recollection. I know this because I just did a 20 page research assignment on the lynchings in Duluth. I don't know about any interviews Tusken may have given other than all the Northern papers (and of course some statements that were made in the New York Times).

  • Guess whose great grandpa was chief of police when tis happened? ughh...

  • Being born and raised in Duluth, I really appreciate this video! I love Duluth so much and I regret that this terrible thing happened there.

  • @cstyle218

What I find disturbing is that in the lynching picture you can see people in the back trying to get in the pic.

  • @9N8X yeah, that is kind of disturbing! Some people!!!!

  • I wonder if Lex Steele every worries about this???

  • I know of one thing that did happened. We kicked your teabag ass back in 1776, ORIGINALDIPSHIT! And we'll gladly do it again!! You know Jack shit about U.S. History, no nuts!

  • lololol, i love how they make the lift bridge & harbor seem all creepy and foreboding with the music and whatnot

  • This never happend

  • @ORIGINOLINDIVIDUAL

    LOL yes it did.

  • @9N8X All a myth from the far left of america.

  • @ORIGINOLINDIVIDUAL

So the historical records and the photo of

the lynching are all just figments of my imagination

then? as well as the thousands of other lynchings in the

    USA?

  • @9N8X faked photo`s. No lynchings happend in america.all rubbish

  • @ORIGINOLINDIVIDUAL

Please tell me you aren't being serious......

  • @9N8X Like all this garbage about the Holocaust.it never happpend. The far left making up lies to make outsiders more welcome.

All bullshit. Not one jewish person died at a concentration camp.

  • Why is your User name eurohebrew?

  • @DSD1v57BG32 Based on my European heritage in combination with my deeper roots that trace back to Heber through Noah, Shem, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  • Sorry for my horrible spelling, I typed a little too fast.

  • Does it make it okay to kill? NO, we still have laws, but we must not be racist just because we think we are superior, or justify ignorance over others.

  • @DSD1v57BG32 Nor should we be racist just because we may feel inferior. Racism is wrong in both directions.

  • @DSD1v57BG32 Every race has been "messed with" at one point in history or another. Blacks are free in this land. They can open their own businesses; attend universities; read books; and simply practice being nice to others. Who's stopping them? Me? You? No ... they're stopping themselves. They have only themselves to answer to. Blaming their woes on incidents that happened a century ago isn't going to make things better

  • @EuroHebrew

Its like when you have a horrible accident happen when you where little and that stays with you all your life, it works with culture also.

  • @DSD1v57BG32 Then Christians should take their aggressions out on Italians since the ancient Romans killed Christians and Jesus Christ. Sorta like that?

  • Well they kinda already did, when the first christian emperor of Rome Constantine came to power pagans were killed, literature banned, and it was illegal to become a pagan. Hypatia a famous mathematician dragged in the streets by a christian mob, she was flayed, then burned.

Because what they experienced happened recently just 40 years ago they were oppressed in the south, it is not done consciously. A subconscious culture that fears authority because they where persecuted for so many years.

  • @DSD1v57BG32 Ummmm ... Constantine WAS a pagan. He supposedly converted to Christianity on his death bed but he practiced Mithraism throughout his life. He created a state religion by blending some of the tenets of Christianity with his pagan beliefs. It was the birth of Roman Catholicism.

  • Creating psycho excuses for the bad behavior only feeds the fire. There is no good excuse for violent crime no matter what grandpa had to endure. Considering the fact that blacks were sold into slavery by other blacks perhaps their anger ought to be directed at themselves. Just a thought.

  • @EuroHebrew . Constantine entrusted some government functions to the Christian clergy in which he actually made the church an agency of the imperial government. It was christian mobs led by bishops that killed pagans.

You know why they did that, because if they didn't those blacks would of becoming slaves, chances are if your grandpa was poor in the south, your going to be poor also.

  • @DSD1v57BG32 My first ancestor reached the shores of what is now America in the mid 1600s. He arrived here as an endendured slave (white slave). He returned to England a couple of years later then came back as a free man. He started the first nail factory and became a wealthy and influential man. I've seen none of his money. Read "They Were White and They Were Slaves" by Hoffman.

  • @EuroHebrew 50 years vs 400.

  • @DSD1v57BG32 Wait ... let me get my violin and some Kleenex. White folks fought to set them free and they became free in 1865. That means that they've been free for 145 years. They've had the opportunity to create better lives for themselves or to leave this "oppressive" nation. They have all black colleges to attend; all black TV to watch; an all black history month; and all black magazines. What more do they want?

  • @EuroHebrew

I just say, educate your self, go to college or something.

  • @DSD1v57BG32 American colleges are part of the problem. I prefer to educate myself with the truth. I prefer to use common sense. I will always be opposed to the idea that we can demonstrate bad behavior today for something that happened 400 years ago. That's just stupid!

  • Are you america?

This happened 40 yeas ago, segregation it is called.

  • @DSD1v57BG32 The 13th Amendment was passed in 1865. Do you not know your history? Did whites go on a rampage murdering and raping because they were segregated? Have you no sense of logic and common sense? Is it right to commit a violent crime against someone because your parents endured segregation? LOL ... give me a break.

  • @EuroHebrew

I feel some tension, usually racists blame blacks as savage animals, like you are doing but when they educate themselves, they come to an understanding.

  • @DSD1v57BG32 People aren't seen as savage animals unless they act and live like savage animals. If that stigma is attached it's because they've done something to earn it. If they don't want to be seen in that light then they need to change their behavior. The question is: Can they?

  • @EuroHebrew

    Case in point.

  • @DSD1v57BG32 "Case in point?" A meaningless statement without further clarification.

  • @EuroHebrew

I made my point, and you proved it.

  • P.s blacks are also part of the human race, the only race.

  • @DSD1v57BG32 Whites are part of the human race as well. Why do blacks take their aggressions out on us?

  • DSD1v57BG32: I would like to respond more but my responses are being blocked. That's what happens when someone uses common sense in these sorts of forums.

  • @EuroHebrew

What are you talking about? blocked?

  • @DSD1v57BG32 I tried several times to respond to your very typical and very liberal, bleeding heart catch phrases but kept getting an "error" message. Apparently someone has the ability to keep messages from being posted if they don't mesh with the chants of the mainstream media.

  • @EuroHebrew

No that's just a glitch, I get that to.

Its not a bleeding heart argument, its a scientific argument.

  • @DSD1v57BG32 Tell me why it's "scientific" for poor black people to commit more violent crimes against whites than poor white people commit against blacks? What's the real scientific answer to that dilemma?

  • @EuroHebrew

Its called the science of statistics and evolutionary psychology.

  • @DSD1v57BG32 Are you saying that one race has "evolved" more slowly in the area of psychology than another race? Hasn't the black race been on planet earth for as long as the white or oriental races? Didn't they have the opportunity to better their circumstances for all of those thousands of years that they occupied the African continent? Where are their aquaducts? Their high tech methods of communication? Their architecture? What say you?

  • @EuroHebrew

    LOL, wiki evolutionary psychology.

Do not comment on something you have no idea what it means.

  • @EuroHebrew

If a culture is messed with for hundreds of years, it will act differently,

  • I wonder when someone is going to produce a Youtube video in remembrance of all the white folks who have been brutally raped and murdered by blacks. I can guarantee you that it would be a very, very, very, very long video. Murder is bad no matter who is committing it but this one-sided sympathy trip is getting a bit old.

  • one of the greatest travesties of "revisonist history" is the idea that every black that was ever lynched was just an innocent victim, a scapegoat for some white man's crime. Who, after witnessing the ridiculous racial commitment to crime that blacks have.....that they DIDN'T often rape, rob and kill white people? Give me a fucking break. I'd be damned surprised to learn that even ONE black lynched in the past was NOT guilty as hell.

  • @oldstock1607 I wonder when someone is going to produce a Youtube video in remembrance of all the white folks who have been brutally raped and murdered by blacks. I can guarantee you that it would be a very, very, very, very long video. Murder is bad no matter who is committing it but this one-sided sympathy trip is getting a bit old

  • @EuroHebrew

Difference, if a black guy was blamed for rape they would immediately be hanged, or tortured, they don't even need evidence like the Duluth lynchings.

If a white guy rapes a black women, he gets 1 year in jail, sometimes nothing.

  • @DSD1v57BG32 Oh ... so that's why there are 10 times more violent crimes from blacks against whites than the other way around. Gotcha!

  • @EuroHebrew I was talking in the past, in today's world poverty is correlated to crimes, and blacks tend to be more poor because of years of oppression they faced, it's a cause and effect, especially in the south if you see that blacks commit more crimes because they are poorer and are more oppressed.

  • @DSD1v57BG32 Tell that to OJ Simpson, Michael Jackson, Tiger Woods, et al. I'm living in poverty and have never struck or physically harmed another human being in my life. Just because someone is broke doesn't mean that they are free to injur others. I'm tired of the old, outdated, and incorrect rhetoric. There is more to a person's criminal behavior than being low on cash.

  • @EuroHebrew

First of all the is different case, that deals with wealth and power, also tuger woods did not do anything truly illegal. We are hierarchic animals, and to wealthiest of men are attacked to power, ect... That's different. Also Micheal Jackson counts as white.

Poverty has a huge correlation to crime, that is a scientifically proven. You must not be very poor because you are using a computer, in the other hand I have been very poor in the past when I lived in LA California.

  • @EuroHebrew

Who said that it is okay to rob if your poor?

Stop making shit up, I was showing you the correlation of poverty and crime, as humans we are fallible because we are just like every other animal, we are controlled by our emotions and not logic because logic demands knowledge and in our society one can only have true knowledge if one has money to pay for it.

  • I have no words for this, but I know that if I were one of those men I would just shoot myself, I knew what was about to happen to me

  • Be aware that 121,193 Black males came up missing in 2008. The 2009 numbers aren't available yet, but the NCIC expects the number to more than double. Black males have been pissing somebody off.

  • The memorial is awesome. Long yet well deserved.

  • Cowards who went to their graves with blood on their hands.

  • ha ha ha, some bloggers here would like to believe that the white girl was really raped even after the docter that examined her said there was no rape, but they won't believe the Tawana Brawley rape story.

  • @skenod She had gonorrhea, as did that beast Max Mason. They examined her and it was a "fresh" infection. Even if they didn't do serious vaginal penetration damage, they were assaulted. Who knows what the three that were hung did. Duluth sset the tone; their city has no longer to worry about black beasts roaming around like other places such as the Twin Cities.

  • @96Z24 Hi, I don’t normally respond to bantering on Youtube threads; however, being that I am currently teaching a unit on this, I feel that I must make an exception. Irene Tusken admitted in interviews that she had gonorrhea before the night of the alleged rape but was too ashamed to tell her parents, especially her mother.

  • Comment removed

  • @96Z24 I agree about who knows what actually happened. Maybe she did get raped and maybe she and James made a plan to lie...who knows. But please make sure that your rants are not racist as your former one has been. PS. It's "hanged" not "hung." People are hanged, items are hung

  • @midgetsoprano06 And I just wanted to say there is likely a robbery, and of course since you know so much about these blacks you should know just a week prior to the lynchings in Duluth they were accused of raping a female in South Bend. So yeah, I can't honestly say this was entirely an honest group of African Americans.

  • woot im from duluth lots of black folk live here now........ they were like the only blacks killed like this round here

  • She said she was never raped you dumbass

  • Comment removed

  • reply to AidanNagolxxx

"Those black bastards deserved to die if they did it."

They deserve to die based on mere accusation you moron, her doctor said she wasn't even raped, you are in support of lynching black people, I have looked at your channel, I am surprised to see that you have a lot of black friends (including ladies), shame on you, you racist Australian.

  • @skenod aussies are pussys. is he gonna call me a racist now lol

  • Ahh the good ole days!

    and they celebrate it! !! ! ! !

  • All over America black people were killed, the entire country is racist, Malcolm X one said............once your below Canadian border you are south. On August 2nd 1977 I was attacked by at least fifty Italians in Flatlands section Brooklyn NY just for walking through the area in broad daylight(I guess because I was blaCK). Now after that close call one expect me to love white people?

  • People get upset when Nation Islam thought their members that the white man is the devil............after this type experience how you expect them to feel?

  • i wonder how they know that the girl wasnt raped by some carnies

  • I its not possible to 'proove a negative'. This was used to persecute so called 'witches'... Tied up and thrown in a river... if they drowned they were declared 'innocent' if they floated they were declared witches and killed anyway. Witch-hunting and racism are very similar ways of thinking/ feeling.

  • White folks to this day hate black people, why are white women so desirable to be raped? Never had one..........DONT WANT THEM.

  • Hispanics have a VERY STRONG belief of karma and that is, "In this life, everything is paid for...before you leave this world, you will pay for everything you've done! No one leaves the world without paying their debt! The "bill" comes in on time and that's when whatever WRONG or BAD or EVIL those people did, they will pay! God is watching and he sees everything. Don't be fooled, sooner or later, things you do, come back to you. It comes back like a boomerang!

  • I hope that all those white folk in the picture smiling, burn in HELL. How this country that was founded in so call Christian Judeo beliefs could be so cruel. I worst part is that white people don't understand the pain and sometimes hatred the Black people have for this country. Oh, and no, I'm not a black person. I think that this government should guarantee free education to all blacks for the cruelty that our ancestors put these loving people of GOD through.

  • Those people smiling in that picture are burning in hell RIGHT NOW!!!

  • nice white guilt buddy.

    sike you sicken me

  • if the Soviet government heard about the Duluth lynchings during the Cold War, chances are they will launch a thermonuclear missile towards Duluth.

If you lynch a black man, your town will be nuked by the Russians.

  • That´s white america, pure and simple. This fact alone acoounts for all the violence commited against whites and, unfortunately it will go on because whites insists in being cruel to others, chifly blacks...

  • Bewildering comment!

  • Well, it´s fact, pure and simple!

  • My comment ended up posted in the wrong place (dunno why). Your comment is not 'bewildering'!

  • i agree..

u just need to read and do research on african american history and you'll see what kind of racist pigs white people were..

  • Fuck you.

  • Exactly. These guys are in a state of complete denial! They blame the victim. It is a classic move by racists.

  • This is One of The Parts in American History that is shameful and heartless

I cannot understand why as a blk man I am hated By all yet I hold no hatred in My heart for any race ! 400 of slavery and 100 years of legal lynchings i BELIVE how they feel no compassion for what they did

  • It is crazy; but it will end.

  • who are you,? why are you on this video you peice of white shit? die ok?

  • And twenty years later we Americans would sit in judgement of the Germans for what they did to the Jews. At least most Germans didn't know what was actually happening. Americans, on the topic of lynching, can't say "We didn't realize what was going on."

  • Go Point My Brother I Live In Germany and I am an American Blk Man from California and in History pertaining to Deutschland is true

  • i live in duluth, and there is a monument, and it is said, cause they were not guilty

  • SaD!

  • well back in the 20'a it was shitty every where... so yeah a bunjch of white people are still there and a few white people still so yeah back then..good times,.. good times..goodtimes..but how many people can you SHOOT with a gun even if you have a million bullets...it wouldnt be enough...guy talkin about if he were a kid he hopes he woluldnt do it.. whatever he'd do it..

  • omg i cant believe that live in this town it puts me to shame.

  • Because of a single incident that happened 90 years ago? What happened was bad; some innocent people were killed. However, to be ashamed of your town because that happened? That's just absurd.

  • how do i save this on a flash drive?

  • not a lot of white women get raped by black men maybe it's the opposite black women have been raped by white men for some many years check you facts

  • 37,000 a year, pal. Check yours.

  • I'm white and i admit that 90% of pedophiles are white. There are more white rapists then black too. So check yours before you comment.

  • You are a pedophile? I would not doubt it.

  • perhaps. The thing is, what happens to white women (and I´m not saying I agree with it) is nothing but vengeance....

  • this video helped me alot on my history day topic and infact i am going to include it in it. thanks alot for the interesting facts.

  • Ignorance is bliss?

  • I was born and raised in Duluth. My sister shared with me the book about the lynchings many years ago. I have been saddened because my grandparents lived in Duluth at the time, and there's a good chance that my grandfather was involved. I'm embarrassed that this horriffic event happened in the city where I grew up. It's a great city to live in. You did a nice job on the story.

  • thems nigga boys wonts be doin it again

  • i just hafta say freeoj has somethin good to say except when he says hip hop albums hurt black people...its entertainment just see it as that...a person may be affected by it but it isnt an excuse to be lazy his whole life...roll with the punches pick urself up and make something of life and as a white male i still think lynching of black ppl is sad...they just didnt understand what they were doing just like the romans and Jesus...shit happens i just wish ppl would make more of a difference

  • So what can we do to stop the violence and become better black people for our young

  • stupid. utterly stupid. why would you lynch anyone unless you're stupid.

  • white people can do this and they did..and they were proud takin photos..they were proud proud proud proud.... and it happened alot the 20's were nutz white people must of been pure shit back then...gather all of your people in the town square and kill KILL KILL KILL easy as 1 2 3..watch ya back..still.

  • ...and some proudly say God bless America...such shame

  • That was sad. There was a similar incident in St Louis in 1916.

  • It's a shame the city decided its white lynching victim wasn't worth remembering, too. Or didn't you know about that one either? He's buried in the same cemetery as the 1920 victims, just a few rows away. Tarred, feathered and lynched in Lester Park in 1918. But never mind...he's not worth remembering.

  • It's not like this guy, Olli Kinkkonen, a Finn, lynched on September, 1918, in Duluth, St. Louis County, for being "A Slacker" (not supporting World War One) is forgotten. There is a novel (published in 2004) centering around him, and he appears in several historical works about the state. A couple of things worth noting also--it was a "private" lynching, meaning nobody posed proudly underneath the body as in the better known lynching. Olli should be remembered indeed, but as a victim of

  • intolerance of people with a differnt point of view. Sadly, I think we see here in some of these comments that intolerance continues as strong as ever in some circles. I love America. To say it has flaws, sins, and mistakes in its past is not to say we have no reason for pride or hope for a better future. We have to start by being honest about the past, then we can (and should) move on from it. I think the effort to remember the Duluth Lynchings is a step in that direction.

  • The statements below (in reverse order) are in response to an earlier post, unklscrufy (7 months ago) Sorry for any confusion.

  • I'm all for being honest about the past. Intentionally excluding one victim from Duluth's lynching memorial doesn't serve that purpose, though, does it? We ALL have to be honest with the past and that means remembering everyone.

  • I'm not calling for dishonesty. This was a separate incident, and I wouldn't be at all opposed to a second memorial. Olli's tombstone does say something like "killed by warmongers," but if that isn't sufficient, another monument would be called for, and also valuable. Certainly your comments made me learn more about the story, which is a good thing. Still, I don't think remembering one means forgetting the other.

  • Every lynching is a seperate incident. But if the city is going to donate prime downtown real estate for a lynching memorial, I would think they'd want all victims included. When the memorial committee, specifically Henry Banks, said he had no intention of including Ollie Kinkkonen, that pretty much told me how sincere any of this was.

  • I'm a historian and currently doing work on this incident and have collected as much primary source material as known to be available. It is not absolutely certain the Ollie Kinkkonen was lynched but anti-Finnish sentiment that had been in place in the region could have been also a factor. Racism is not just a skin color issue. In this part of the region Norwegians, Swedes, The Finnish, Eastern European, etc. immigrants often held each other in suspicion. Issues of assimilation was a concern too

  • racism has no place in this world

  • Actually, it would be a sign of ignorance if any human being didn't equate the city of Duluth with such a horrific crime. The hell with Duluth, what isn't fair is how these three innocent young men were lynched.

  • Unfortunately you had to witness it as it happened. It must suck to be 100 some odd years old. Well at least you know about the Internet.

  • Great video. I've lived in the area my entire life (currently I live and worked downtown), and the place that that happened, I've walked through hundreds of times. But I haden't known this much info about it.

  • I'll bet that if linching's were still done, there would be no such thing as crips or bloods.

  • Actually the crips and the bloods are helping the KKK. The gangs are a lot more effective, when it comes to negro genocide. Every time someone buys a hip hop or rap album, they're helping kill another black youth's potential as a human being.

  • You obviously do not listen to enough hip-hop to have an informed opinion, and stop talking about Crips and Bloods. This is not 1990. There numbers are insignifficant. Educate yourself, please.

  • fuck you stupid fucking craker

  • this great that the city put this up. I was in Duluth in the late 1980's at the the train depot and saw a small display. I was with my dad at the time. When I went back to Duluth in May of 2007 I was able to see plot in the wall downtown. I thought its great. Thanks for putting this on youtube.

  • Wow...

Thank for putting this on youtube. You never here too much about things in Duluth Minn.

  • i live in Duluth, know where this happened, and remember talking about it in school.

  • When I visited Duluth in 2000 there was no mention at all of the lynchings, so I was stunned to learn about it a few years later. Good to know that city is finally facing up to its past.

  • Thank you for giving me the chance to know this story. Great video.
