  • Joe Lewis was the real thing!!!!...he did achieved as a figther a lot, not only in movies...not like others so called "kings of martial arts",wow he is great!!!!

  • melvin keeps disrespectfully passing off his cowardice as being cool by constantly turning his back to joe. I'd punch him in the back of the fucking head

  • @killerwill77 Cowardice? He's in a boxing ring with Joe Lewis. I'd say that proves him "not a coward" right there.

  • "keep hands up" thus endeth the lesson.

  • he's a hard puncher

  • Joe Lewis Trained with My O'Sensei same with Bill Wallace these guys were monsters.

  • hate to disappoint but joe was a wrestling champion first off, intercollegiate I think, before okinawa where he learnt karate while in marines,so chokin him out in seconds wouldnt happen. And any guy goin into mma would do some jiu jitsu anyway. He put a heavywieght in hospital in a coma for the word title,so he packed a punch. Not easy to beat aguy who can hit hard and wrestle

  • That was pretty cool. I never saw Lewis fight before. It was an exciting ending, how can anyone criticize this fight in a negative. I wouldn't want to be in front of those punches. If Lewis was 40 years younger he'd probably be a contender in MMA. The guy is definately tough.

  • @MrMavilla1 Joe lewis doesnt like that UFC stuff..Most of those guys arent real martial artists in my opinion They look like street fighters to me...But yeah Joe Lewis is a powerful guy..His sidekicks were really feared by other fighters in the 60's

  • @CIENEGALOKO13 you ovbiously have not seen many MMA fights. lewis was a good fighter then because fighting wasnt what it is today. it has evolved so much to say they arent real martial artists is silly. look up melvin manhoef or anderson silva or lyoto machida and tell me those guys wouldnt murder lewis in his prime. and those are some stand up fighters that would kill him in stand up. theres many more bjj fighters and wrestler that would choke him out in seconds too..

  • @1337mma Im not criticizing MMA as a martial art because its a very effective art. I just dont like what UFC stands for and MOST (not all) of the fighters Ive seen on tv look like street fighters with no technique. Ive faught MMA fighters in tournaments with greater skill that what Ive seen on most UFC events. But like i said its just my opinion. BTW ive seen machida fight and hes a great fighter.

  • @1337mma And you know this how, exactly? Do you own a time machine? It sounds like you're just saying completely unverifiable nonsense based on stuff you made up in your head. The entire premise of "guy from the 70s versus guy from today" is idiotic anyway, like saying "Albert Einstein was a better scientist than Isaac Newton." You can't even begin to make sense out of a comparison like that.

  • @CIENEGALOKO13 Joe Lewis doesn't like UFC? He worked with UFC in the early days as a post-fight interviewer. I've also personally been at seminars taught by Lewis and heard him talk about the value of mixing striking and grappling training, so he clearly has no problem with MMA.

And UFC fighters are somehow not martial artists all of a sudden? What are you talking about? I'm pretty sure those people practice martial arts.

  • @TheRichardHinckley UFC and MMA are not synnonymous. UFC is a corporation.

  • @CIENEGALOKO13 I know. I'm saying that Lewis seems to approve of UFC specifically, since he was working for UFC at one point. I'm also saying that, broader than just UFC, Lewis seems to have respect for MMA. And beyond that, Lewis considers MMA fighters to be legit martial artists, and I don't see the grounds for denigrating them, their training, or their abilities.

  • great fight but, comparing with what's going on today this is kinda boring.

  • crap fight.

  • that was a cool fight

  • lewis looked bad in this match.lee would destroy him

  • Joe Lewis had a ton of weight on Bruce Lee. He was also a better boxer, and had the advantage of actually being in real fights.

Which fight are you looking at, btw? Lewis put on an in-fighting clinic. Real fights don't look like the movies, dude.

  • LOL you don't know what you are talking about. Bruce Lee was a street fighter before being an actor. There are police testimonies of all the times Bruce Lee defended himself in the street and beat bigger guys.

Better boxer than Lee? Did you know that Bruce was a high-school boxing champion in Hong-Kong? Get your facts right.

Joe Lewis was a student of Bruce Lee also. You think Joe was going to learn from someone if he thought he was better than him?

  • ....alright, let's discuss. Ignoring the fact that the HK police force is full of corruption and bullshit, I can't find a single police report about Lee 'beating bigger guys in the street'. However, I did find he got into a scrap once, when he was 15, and his mom flipped shit and sent him to San Fran. Later he had like 2 sanctioned fights with some kung fu dudes, which are hardly street fights.

Also, Lee may have been a high school champion, but Lewis was, uh, 'world' champ in a 'pro' league.

  • (continued) Get your logic straight. Also, if you knew anything about Lee, you'd understand that it's kind of odd to call Lewis his 'student'. He encouraged people to find a way that suited them best, and he and a bunch of his friends (Inosanto, Lewis) would get together and discuss training methods and philosophy and the like. It's not like Lee taught Lewis how to box.

  • Well said...and it's true!

And of course, Lewis would beat Lee in the ring. No doubt about that!

  • Bruce did not use force against force as he knew Wing Chun principles extremely well...Bruce was WAY faster than Lee and would have beat Lewis to the punch every time. Lee in fact DID teach Joe 'boxing' as when they met Lewis was doing 'Karate' tournaments where Lee knew boxing VERY well andwhen a teen won thre Championship of 12 schools and knocked out three finalists in all in the first rounds of each macth..he then beat thje three year champ Gary elms with a knockout in the third round.

  • I'll say what I said to the other guy; you can't use the fact that he was a high school champ as an argument, because that is a very small and amateur venue.

And Bruce obviously did not teach Lewis how to box. Bruce's style would definitely focus on speed and footwork, but Lewis is clearly an in-fighter, getting close and working short range punches.

  • You must remember thatLee was boxing for two years in High School and according to his ex pro boxer clergymen/boxing instructor at the school Brother Gregory...Lee was very skilled. Lee also studied Cassius Clay from early 60's and onward and he had a collection of over 200 8mm boxing films which he bought from a boxing film company in York,Pennsylvania via mail order..which he studied OBSESSIVELY. They were fights going back to the 20's and to Lee's present time. Sugar Ray Leonard>>

  • I don't even know where to start with you. He was boxing at *high school*. That is not a world venue, so not even close. Lewis isn't known for being explosive, he's known for wading in and punching your face off. I'd like those quotes that say Mike fucking Tyson learned boxing from Bruce Lee, that is total crap. Neither Inosanto or Norris were boxers. You can't beat someone in sparring. Sugar probably thought he had special kung fu powers or some shit. And he was only in one street fight. Ever.

  • Wait a minute, he was streetfighting since 11..till 18 yrs old. That's a lot of experience facing an opponent. That's builds fighting spirit & character & on the HK streets of the 50's it was brutal fighting & chains & knives. You had no ref,no rules,no rounds. Further yes, his fights in High School were not a WORLD venue..but he 17!!! Of course it's not a World Venue. but it is still experience & was Champ of 12 schools & KO's 4 guys. 3 in the 1st round! & KO's a bigger guy in the final fight.

  • Lee also had streetfights in Washington including in the gym against a Japanese Karate expert and demolished him.

he had MANY fights when guys in LA and Oakland (as Dan Inosanto has told us) came to the door of the schools Bruce had and wanted to bash his face in..and Bruce beat them all...easily. I never said Lewis was known for being explosive. I said Leonard AND Tyson learned explosiveness from watching Lee in films. I never said Tyson learned all of boxing from Lee. You damn well can >>

  • >>beat someone in sparring..are you on drugs? I've seen guys knocked out in sparring sessions. I'd say they LOST.

Lee was in many streetfights. Hawkins Cheung said Lee was in 4 or 5 streetfights a day in HK. He was Lee's Wing Chun sparring partner. William Cheung said the same. Bruce's brother Peter has reiterated that. Now you are saying Sugar Ray is naive? He's a smart guy and elite level pro athlete...you don't think he knows skill and ability? The quotes on Leonard I will give you here>>

  • ["One of the guys who influenced me wasn't a Pro boxer. I always loved the catlike reflexes and the artistry of Bruce Lee and I WANTED TO DO IN BOXING WHAT HE WAS ABLE TO DO in karate(martial arts).

I started watching his movies before he became really popular in Enter The Dragon and I PATTERNED MYSELF after A LOT OF HIS WAYS. Lee was an artist and like him I try to go beyond the fundamentals of my sport."] Sugar Ray Leonard, Playboy Magazine interview June 1982.

    Want more Marcus? >>

  • Learned MUCH of his defense in boxing from watching Lee on film..he also learned explosiveness in boxing from watching Lee..as did Mike Tyson. I have the quotes to prove it if you want them. Bruce fought and beat Louis Delgado easily in sparring session and said Bruce could have been a champ. Norris stated, "If Bruce competed professionally I know he could have been World Champion. Dan inosanto stated that Lee competing professionaly as a boxer would have EASILY placed in the top 3 in TWO>>

  • >>weight division". Sugar Ray Leonard also stated, " In a dictionary, you say "greatest", you say "Bruce Lee", that´s the way it is. He is

    second to no one."

Sugar Ray Leonard (from minute 3.46 to 3.57of HNL Media video interview).

My point is, Lee knew boxing (& streetfighting) & was schooled & experienced in BOTH. He was boxer and intense researcher & knew the fight game & practiced what he studied to see what worked. He & his skills were in Ed Parker's words, "One in TWO BILLION".

  • >> Quoted from the book, The TAO of Bruce Lee by Davis Miller (Miller is also a friend of Leonards and has known him very well for many years.)

" And, more surprisingly than his influence on other television and movie stars and martial artists, if there had not been a Bruce Lee there might not have been a "Sugar" Ray Leonard. In the late 80's..writing about Leonard in my first 4 national magazine assignments I got to spend time with him, Ray & I found out that we had some things in common.>>>

  • >>As adolescents we'd both worked to emulate Lee and Ali and we were still big fans. After we became friendly, I mailed Ray several rare video cassettes of rare Lee footage that George Tan had sent me. When we spent time together, Ray and I often spoke about martial arts AND DISCUSSED A COUPLE OF LITTLE KNOWN FACTS ABOUT HIS RING SKILLS:

RAY SAID HE LEARNED (that's L-E-A-R-N-E-D, Marcus) MUCH of his defense FROM WATCHING LEE IN MOVIES. Writing a profile of Ray for the Washington Post >>>

  • >> Magazine before one of his final bouts. I interviewed him after a training session. " Davis, I hope you brought some Bruce stuff with you," was the first thing he said as I took a seat on an old yellow sofa in his dressing room.

I said I had a tape in the car.

Numerous other world-champion boxers have been inspired by Lee, including MIKE TYSON, who buys hundreds of martial arts movies &, LIKE LEONARD, HAS SAID that he LEARNED EXPLOSIVENESS FROM WATCHING LEE in "ETD" GOT THAT Marcus?) >>

  • >> I have also seen a video interview of Leonard by HNL Media that WAS on youtube but because of copyright law has since been removed,in which Leonard also stated that he learned a lot of moves from Bruce which he used in the ring and one of his favorties that Bruce was master of was slipping a straight jab to the face by slipping his head back just enough that the punch would miss him at it's full extension by a fraction of an inch>>>

  • >>and then he would come right back and follow the punch as it retracted with his own attack or over the top or side of that attack like lightening. He then said after learning that from watching Lee he used it all the time in his fights!

Even TYSON as you read learned from watching LEE. And I'd say that one of Tyson's best fighting attributes is his explosiveness, & he learned that excellent attribute from Lee.

So there are the sources/quotes from Leonard.

  • You are obviously a raging fanboy, and are too busy blindly spouting mostly-incorrect quotes out of context to support your ball riding conquest, so I'm finding it pointless to argue with you. I'll just bring up a couple points, as this is not important enough in my life to spend an hour writing 6 replies. I asked for those quotes you promised, saying Tyson learned from Lee. Failed to deliver. He was only in one recorded street fight, and his mom flipped out and moved him to San Fran.

  • I already stated Davis Miller's remark saying Tyson learned explosiveness from watching Lee. Leonard knows Tyson and Miller is close with Leonard & knows more of Tyson than you. I believe Miller may have even interviewed Tyson if I recall. So I'll take his word far over yours any day. I'm no fanboy but I have common sense enough to put logic to work with facts. Finally, you make me laugh. Now that you've seen the quotes from Leonard, this intelligent, Pro-boxing Champion is now, "naive"? Haha.

  • Organized fights with other martial artists are NOT a street fight. Leonard was obviously naive, because he thought Bruce did karate. Sparring is a learning experience, you can't win. Lastly "brutal fighting and chains and knives"? Seriously? Life isn't a movie you ass hat, fighting is just as brutal today as it was in the 50's. Probably more so, people don't respect life so much anymore.

  • You sir are an idiot. Every streetfight has to be "recorded" by a police report to prove that it occured? I already told you that Lee' sister and brother Peter and mother and Hawkins Cheung and William Cheung (and others) have stated that Bruce would be in streetfights all the time. He beat up the son of a triad member which Lee's parents kne would get him killed by triads possibly before he was even arrested for fighting..(which he was in threat of but Dad got him out of that).

  • Hong Kong streets by the way were brutal and very tough in post WW2 Japanese occupied HK. Gangbangers run the streets now with firearms but for one on one streetfighting I would say HK was much worse than cites in the US today. You think people respected life moe back in HK then then now? You don't know about HK and it's history. The only thing that means much in HK..and always did, is money. Money, power, territory. That is their God. People's lives were secondary to triads and thugs then.

  • And if you were smart you'd know that Lee created a Martial art, that could adapt to any situation mate.=] Do research before you bash.

  • Lee didn't create jack squat. Jeet Kun Do is the name of a theory in which you take what works for you and train the hell out of it. Do research before you retort, apparently.

  • Yeah it is unreasonable because not just in the philosophical realm but in the medical realm he was called "A medical marvel". He would have no problem taking on someone twice his size.Look up his punch/kick speed demo's here, their so fast the camera couldn't even catch it in slow-mo.

  • A theory in which I believe the hell out of, by the way. I just don't think Lee could beat someone twice his size who held a belt in a world ranked fighting league. Unreasonable? I think not.

  • He is JOE LEWIS, not LOUIS.
