In Japan the symbol on his back means, '10' which in Japan means 'perfect aka heaven' it also means 'sky'

but in Japan sky translates into heaven. At least that's what I remember from doing research on the symbol on his back.

This is why Akuma mentions that he's transcended humanity, as in he's reached enlightenment.

In SF4 he even states that Ryu has not transcended humanity and lacks discipline.

To be precise, he states he follows the path of the Ashura; he's basically not a human at all. This contrasts with the kanji on Gouken's back - Mu - which is effectively a higher level of enlightenment (Mu meaning "Nothing").

Gouki effectively chose the fast way of gaining power by giving into Satsui no Hadou, while Gouken picked the slower road for true enlightenment by abandoning Satsui no Hadou. Someone wrote an interesting article on it; you can Google for "Gouki Gouken Mu Ten" to find it.

It's true. Hes not evil, he just has diffrent ethics. He won't kill for sport or for spite, but to him killing in battle is not wrong, just the natural flow of things.
