Somebody here used the term underrated... Man, how true that is. Gerry in the 70s had a way of blind siding you with one amazing song after another. To this day, Baker Street is one of my favorite all time recordings.
Takin' me back, to the fall of 1978...going home to Ohio on leave from Ft. Campbell on the Western Kentucky Parkway in the middle of the night driving a 69 Dodge R/T with Gerry Rafferty in my 8 track keeping me awake. God bless you Gerry.
yes, this song is great, he was a great songwriter, and I like the comment about this being reminiscent of the Bee Gees of Jeff Lynne, as I love them too, and the Bee Gees are my all time favorite group. Gerry Rafferty did not get enough recognition for his work, just one of the best around. All those hit songs of my early teen years mean a lot to me.
"Mr. Rafferty, thank you for your creative musicianship.. Thankyou for being a light in my childhood....You will always be remembered in our hearts and souls!"
Gerry Rafferty made some very very good records from the very start to the very end. If you ever get the chance, by the album, called North & Soth - great, great song. I sure miss him!
this was my favorite song in 1978, 20 yrs old and married to the first of four wives, and lovin life big time...thanks for the post and god bless gerry rip...
The centerpiece of the Byrne covered, 10-song LP C2C--the song that defines Gerry and exemplifies his goodness, his vice (alcohol) and his rock sensibility--is Home And Dry. "This silver bird takes me, cross the sky, just one more hour and I'll be, home and dry." Absolute power. Absolute purity. "Gotta see you. Gotta be with you." Home And Dry is a sparkling example of Gerry's forte: depth of lyric. The album's pinnacle track, Home And Dry, captures the essence of the man, Gerry Rafferty.
I did no know of Jerry's passing until reading these comments ...bless you Jerry you'll be missed. My teen years were no picnic as might be normal however few it were that I could trust like the friendly songster who always soothed my pain through the radio waves. Thank you.
@ogaextreme2035 I agree, his songs so under rated by some still fill my mind, my heart, and sometimes my eyes. God bless you Gerry, and when it comes to my turn to join you and my ancestors maybe I could shake your hand share a few pints and strum a few chords. Once again, cheers mate, I will always remenmber you.
@richiexl5 I so agree with you that reading your comment made my eyes fill with tears..... cheers! and I'd love to share a few pints with Mr Rafferty too!
This song is one of the many hits Gerry had in the 70's. His songs remind me of a certain time in my life, when I was a bored kid actually, my Father had the home stereo set as an alarm clock to get him up, I'd listen to Gerry's songs in the morning while lying in bed waiting for the world to wake up.
I listened to Gerry's City To City as a 14 year old, and every year I'd pull it out for one or two go-rounds: LP, then cassette, now iPod. Each year it grew on me, as I grew as a person. Then, Gerry died, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. A lost innocence--I thought he'd always be there. Although I never listened to him as I did, for instance, The Eagles or Aerosmith, he was always there. Until now. So now, I have spent hours researching this man. His indelible music. I'm on board, Ger
I have listened to nothing but Gerry since his passing. I'm another person who loved him so much in high school. So sorry he had his troubles. This song is so great. But am I the only one who loves Snakes and Ladders the most?
Vale Gerry. You were the best, man. City to City and Night Owl on vinyl on my turntable in the seventies are a special memory. Privileged to have your songs as part of the sound track of my life. His kind shall pass this way but once.
I'm so sad, my daughter thinks I'm nuts, listening to all the songs posted here over and over for days. I was so in love with Gerry in high school, listened to his music all the time, drove my mom nuts. He had such a strong melodic voice that is easy to sing along with, and you can even understand all he is saying in his songs. RIP sweet man.
I was so in love with Gerry when in high school when City to City came out! I've enjoyed his music and even introduced my daughter, who is now 11, to Gerry's music and she loves it too. He had such a strong, melodic voice that is easy to sing along with, and you can understand what he's saying! Still love Gerry, and his music. He reminds me of my high school years, of growing up, loving, and I feel like a part of me has died along with the sweet man. RIP Gerry love.
I have been listening to Gerry Rafferty for 2 days now. His music takes me back to being a teenager. He is definately part of my lifes soundtrack. RIP.
I am saddened by the death of Gerry Rafferty. My biggest memory of this song was February 1979. I am a South Carolina resident and we had an ice storm that month that knocked out electricity. I had a battery radio and was listening to WBBQ (Augusta, GA) and they played this. The DJ laughed and said that is how the utility crews felt right about then; wishing that they were at home Home & Dry out of this weather. Love you, Gerry. RIP.
Amen to that, tonyt550! I still remember the first time I heard that incredible sax on "Baker Street"! Those junior high/high school years of the late '70's still have the best music! Maybe it's because that's when we came of age, usually in our basements or in the back seats of cars, but I still remember that "you gotta grow, you gotta learn by your mistakes, you gotta grow a little every day just trying to stay awake"...RIP, Gerry--there a helluva band up there--I'll be listening....
A very sad passing of a fine musician, his music was so inspirational and evocative. It's a real shame that there are very few artists like him still around. May you rest in peace Mr.Rafferty !!! God bless you !
Well if your reading this I guess you know now of Gerry dying..Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family...GERRY YOU'LL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AS A LEGEND TO US THAT WERE 16 OR WHATEVER IN 1977-78...I just found out a few hours ago of your passing...Now after I get off of work I'm going to go home and listen to City to city and remember the great songs that you wrote and sang...Thank you 4 the memories !!!
I was 17 when this came out.My sister had the humblebums albums and i loved them especially patrick and her father etc.genius is a word so overused but it certainly applied to gerry. The bit on the artworks scotland tribute to him when his daughter says she grew up listening to gerry singing next door is just beautiful.Imagine having this playing as you grew up .So sad he wasnt entirely happy in life but with all great artists his music will live forever.
Happily remembering this and other songs of Mr. Rafferty's from 1978, remember it like it was yesterday. Knew he was ill but still sad to hear of his passing...this is when music REALLY WAS music. God Bless and Thanks for the wonderful gifts of songs and memories Mr. Rafferty
I used to dream about being in love and coming back from some trip from the other side of the country back to Austin, Texas... dropping down back to see my love... I'm so heart broken with the news about his passing today.
just heard the sad news on smooth radio that gerry rafferty has died what agreat talent he was never ever will we see the likes of his singing talents ever again r.i.p gerry
He's just the best. He's incomparable. I've been humming the Baker Street album for years & my friends & coworkers think I'm nuts but I don't care. Now I'm not well & have it planned to have Gerry's music playing @ my memorial service.
@MammutGameplay nice try,,l was born in 57,,,and l reckon l was born at the best time of all,,when l was 6,, was dancing to the beatles,,when l was 14 l was dancing to slade,,lve been a lucky bastard,,merry xmas,,
@robharding1957 - 1960 makes it in there. This album came out the year I finished high school and left home. It's a masterpiece. And Merry Christmas to you too.
Really, this song is pretty much the best song Gerry ever did. It got straight under my skin when I first heard it back in '78 and it's stayed there ever since ... it's been my favorite song for 32 solid years.
IMO it anticipated a lot of the good softer rock-with-an-edge and synth-power-pop that made music always worth listening to.
It's perhaps the most underrated song of the 70s I can name, and will remain my favorite for another 32 years (at least)
As per Wikipedia, he's suffering from liver failure and was taken off life support this month, but his condition is improving despite being in critical condition.
@abacus1963 14 in 78 too - DOB was 1964 - 1978 is seared into my memory, along with this whole album. This song, and Baker Street, was the sound track to my nutty teen years......
This song reminds me of when I was in the Marines. I was at MCRD San Diego which was next to the runway of San Diego Airport. At night when I was on guard duty I would watch the planes take of and land and this song would run through my mind.
Great uplifting song from a memorable album. I'm not sure which version of the album i prefer. The Vinyl version (and the one they have on Spotify) plays at a quicker speed than this. I was told by a Rafferty fan on Tube that the speeded up version was to suit US radio and this slower version was how Gerry's voice/music really sounded. Regardless i'd say City and Night Owl were his finest hours. His debut album from '71 is a forgotten gem (well worth checking out). Cheers for posting.
@IQ136 Hi, My name is Todd, and I'm no 50, and struggling too with the past being so much better than the present. I'd give anything to be 20 again. lol. Gerry Raferty, abba, etc... take me back to better days. Damm, getting old really sucks. Have a great day, and I hope you find peace and happiness. I doubt I will ever again.
@golden8378 Don't give up Todd. I'm 45 now, the last surviving member of my family, and recovering from stomach cancer, and I know EXACTLY how you feel about the past having been more enjoyable. Memories can be enjoyed for what they are, but we all have to keep on going ahead with our lives the best we can. I hope things turn around for you, and that you find peace and happiness.
@Miniver765 My son requires both a heart and double lung transplant. He's currently on kemo as well. I never imagined it could ever happen to him. He's my only child. I myself had a heart attack and bypass surgury [twice] within the same year. Died on the table , but they got me back.I was kicked out of the house at 14. I've been on my own ever since.Gerrys music got me through so many lonely times; as well as the hard times.Whatever's written in your heart is all that matters. God bless.
Ahh...the late 70's/early 80's the BEST in so many different variations of music, puberty was so much fun back then...now at 44, life is not what I wish it was and today's music is just AWFUL...no style, harmony or happiness, just ripped-off crap/noise...oh well, no one can take away the memories! Take Care and God Bless ALL of you from Wisconsin
Man, I LOVE this song! I'm going to my class reunion soon and I'm definitely gonna play it before I enter the room to put me in the mood; that indestructible mood of being sixteen again, and Friday nights meant The Midnight Special and good, clean, yackin' on the phone, talkin' loud n' sayin' nothin FUN.. No bills, no heart-hurt too deep to come away from in an hour...Keepin' the 70's alive! Indeed...Indeed...
Awesome song! I was 14 when it came out. And for all those who want to "go back to that time"...you know we can't...BUT the music will ALWAYS TAKE US BACK HOME AGAIN. Enjoy the ride!!!!
yes, gerry rafferty!!!! awesome album. all songs were good on this album: city to city. i listened to it over and over either on vinyl or cassette. thanks for posting.
we should have heard alot more of this man during his singing career is voice is incredible is songs are amazing no one of todays so called singers don,t even get close to his kind of talent the best of the best
@captainsoul1953 i try to listen to this song every night ,,, it takes be back to 8th grade and baltimoe,,, now i am in charlotte , nc. i hate it here,,, if i could get back to 1978
1978, Mission Dolores elementary (a private school in San Francisco) I'm 10 years old then and really grooved to songs like this. Yeah, I want to go back.
Because Baker Street has become so inculcated everywhere throughout all these years, the rest of the songs on City to City have practically been grayed out on today's classic rock radio.
This song, as well as most of the tracks on City to City was played on our local album rock station way back in 1978 and the songs lingered around for quite some time on FM during the 1980s.
An album I like to revisit. It reminds me of my first year living away from my parents.
What an incredible song by the greatest singer songwriter of the 70's/80's Gerry Rafferty! This was without a doubt one of the BEST albums of the late 70's. One word: MAGICAL
I too own it on vinal as well as NIGHT OWL..was raised on the man's music...if i ever win the power-ball I would offer too fly him out and pay him a handsome ransome too have a private concert at Two-Moon Campground...
Give me a shout and I'll be there. I'll hit the Mega Millions the same day you hit the Powerball-you find Rafferty and I'll hogtie Bob Seger and meet you at the campground. Cheers!
This album DELIVERS!!! Everything from the cool album art, the thought provoking and heart warming lyrics to the great talent the musicians put forth to make a true gem from the 70's, gosh out of all the albums I have stashed away, (500 or so) which one comes out first each and everytime, Yes, City to City. This album was HUGE in 1978, I mean really HUGE!!! A masterpiece from a super talent. I keep rediscovering more each time I listen to album..Thank you tonyt for a great memory.
Gerry Rafferty is special, most of his works take some listening effort. Don't forget the verse, poetry. I think all his works are from a scale from good to better than good, unfortunately hard to get it. And the man's voice is amazing, there's nothing like it! I hold Gerry as one of the greatest, ever.
I agree castertunes1967. If I really had to choose a favourite it'd be Days Gone Down but Home and Dry to me is also a masterpiece. The bloke is a genius in my opinion.
Darcal2---a pity that here in the states we only got the hits by this artist.."Home and Dry" was a good one and "Right Down the Line"..."Baker Street" took over the airwaves that summer.
Yeah very true. It's a shame most people only know Gerry Rafferty for Baker Street and Stealers Wheel for Stuck In The Middle With You. I admit they're great songs but he's made so many others that are at least as good and some slightly better, to me anyway.
Mine too...still have the Melody Maker review of the album...he described the last 3 tracks on the album as filler...mind you after "Whatevers written in your heart" they do pale a little untill you play them a few more times
@lievequin94 Amen! And now you will be missed forever. RIP GERRY. Thank you for all the anthems you have given to special moments in our lives since the 70's.
This has become my theme song in the past several weeks... I am going to get the opportunity to see someone very special that I have not seen in 22 years... It's going to be one AMAZING reunion and this song says it all...THANK YOU GERRY!!!
I could not possibly have asked for a better reunion...we only had a 3 day weekend together, but were so comfortable with each other, it felt like we hadn't stopped talking at all in 22 years. We were still very attracted to each other...had a great time, great company, and unbelievably great sex. Am looking forward to spending more time together ASAP...I am in Colorado, he's in California...
This was one of the lps I loved so much that I bought it in the gold cd edition. It was produced so well - really ahead of its time. Thank you for posting!
My father and I used to drive all night from holland to south of france with only Gerry to accompany us... great times that were...still get goosebumps from his music
The lyrics talk about the time he was travelling between Glasgow and London to sort out the legal problems that had been left behind after the break up of his band Stealers Wheel.......ie "feeling tired but I feel good, 'cause I did everything I said I would, I think of you 'cause I know how you'll be feelin." The travelling put a strain on his marriage at that point, and he had a young daughter, Mattie of about 7. Matties Rag also from the CIty to CIty album also refers to him being away also.
This song has special meaning for me. When I was stationed in Japan, I heard this song and it became my "back to the states song". I missed my wife and couldn't wait to get home.
Awesome song! I wouldn't expect anything less of Gerry, though.
But I've always questioned one thing about this song; what exactly does he mean by "high above the clouds I come 'stealin''?" I've never quite understood what that meant. Could anybody elaborate?
I'm a kind of lunatic so let me give it a shot: He may mean that he's free from any human constraints and human trouble in his soul and sees the human condition clear like running water on stone and he's getting away with a good thing like a thief making good. Metaphorical. Use your imagination.
I agree with the person who commented they don't understand why we don't hear this song
on radio. Stations have become too corporate.
Gerry was one of the best musicians- no doubt about that.

@golden8378 Don't give up Todd. I'm 45 now, the last surviving member of my family, and recovering from stomach cancer, and I know EXACTLY how you feel about the past having been more enjoyable.
