  • Oooh i thought you were going to remove a tranny.. like remove one from a night club..

  • I'm doing the exact same thing right now except I'm in my second month.

  • anyone who works that fast will most likely forget something...unless of course, they're an android. I think it's interesting how some Overhaulin' or Wrecks to Riches shows appear to mainly use hand tools vs air tools. I haven't see those in awhile though. I bought an 01 Buick Regal in the fall of 07 for $8,000 and so far it's been the most expensive car I've ever had to maintain. Two ( rebuilt ) racks new rims (chrome peeled & leaked ) and tires, brakes and now the trans is acting up when hot.

  • 5 people thought "tranny" in the headline was another word for "Transexual" which they were ment to search for.

  • wow this girl must me the greatest inspiration to females around the world..

  • nice grcc sticker

  • How much to do mine? lol

  • say homie i have a 1996 camry xle wit a ton of mods i need major help on removing my trans please help me 210 300 8220 leave a messege plsssss... from d@t HomieFrm SA Town

  • bullshit !!! that did not take 1 min it took 1:33.....

  • I just did mine in 98 GMC Sonoma, it was a pain in the ass, since I did not know what I was doing in the first place, but it is done!

  • i would just take the tranny off the bottom

  • i would pay you by the hour anytime lol and i found it easier to drop the box not lift it.

but thats in a 1997 pulsar

  • Fantastic video :) Loved it ! Just curious though, how long did it actually take? Looked like alot of work ! and it looks like you did it all by yourself? one man job? I found it amazing . Thanks for sharing .

  • Kinda reminds me of those Sesame Street videos i used to watch as a kid.. with the music and everything.

  • liar, it wasn't done in 90sec.

    93sec

  • It looks like it is just easier to pull the trans and engine out all at once since it's FWD and then you can just work on the whole thing on a bench or floor.

  • @smithraymond09029 Perhaps, but it didn't want to lose my refridgerant in the system. I also thought it would be a cool looking video this way.

  • I like a ford manuel better..loll...less time to do.

  • The title of this vid is very deceiving. Not the kind of tranny my erection was hoping for. I hope you burn in hell, you fucking freak.

  • yep on all front wheel drive the bottom is easier.. I can do taurus ax4n axode in about 1 hr 15 min out and back in again filled and ready to be road tested. That one I would have put a scissor jack between the back of the engine and the sub frame pushed it forward while letting it hang on the engine mount.. in order to clear the diff from the frame and they pretty much fall out from the bottom. some like the taurus you have to remove the sub frame.. air tools are your friend..

  • @mxer330 Great tip man. Yeah, air tools would helpful. I got them, just no compressor since I hung up by wrenches and became a filmmaker.

  • Red Bull+5hr energy+4 Locos= 1 min Engine Swap

  • its way easier and less work to pull it from the bottom..... no engine removal that way...

  • @mxer330 on a fwd? good luck

  • wish it went that fast in real life LOL

  • I know that guy they call him the meth monster

  • Wow the title of this video was very deceptive . . . oh well, back to gay porn for me

  • @rotcbrad yep:D

  • @rotcbrad lmao

  • double four time wrench jockey

  • @allergic2kryptonite wrench jockey...i like that haha

  • You kno damn well that shit took yu days

  • Wow the tranny is on the side in the engine compartment.. Thats new to me lol

  • well done!

  • learn to work on real cars not that foreign trash

  • @DDixon1000 You don't see to many GM, Chrysler or Ford cars from the early 90's. Accord and Camry's dominate. LOL, how many early 90's Ford Taurus, Chevrolet Lumina or Chrysler New Yorkers or Dodge Intrepids do you see from the 90's? They are in the junk yards, that's why.

  • @studpuppy69 The most reliable cars were made in the 90s everything else after are equal in reliability

  • intense.

  • lol why the whole engine out?

just the tranny aint enough lol?

  • I want to swap the trans on my 89 Corolla but I'm worried about hooking everything back up. Is there any info in a Chiltons or Haynes manual about removing and replacing the trans? Also, do I have to take out the engine like that or can I use blocks to support it?

  • very nyce. love ur work.

  • looks cool going that fast. im going to make a vid like this when i do the swap on my 04' wrx swap

  • That was the best video I have seen all month!

  • Wow couldnt it just come out the bottom using a engine craddle? Just asking!

  • @trappedinabox100 ya it depends on make/model like gm's and most domestic you drop the front trans/engine support and remove the drivers front suspension and take the trans out thru the driver side wheel well.but it all depends on how it comes apart but i mean look how fast it got done this way LLOL

  • yotes sure got interestin tranny locations. then again im usd to 8 cyl classic engiens

  • how long did it really take...and ....nice job

  • How much would you charge me to swap on my car .....

  • How much does this usually cost?

  • My respect to you, sir! :) Nice work!

  • ok im goin to be a motor mechanic before i begin my course i would jus like to ask one question do u need to be good in maths ???? im scared way 2 scared

  • @EngineerOfGods You don't need to be Einstein, but should be able to do basic math :)

  • @matttchapman basic math ??? ohh god

what are you saying i never did maths :(

i can't even do simple division nor multiplication

i left maths like centuries ago

but hey thanks 4 helping me out sir

r u auto mechanic sir i got a lot of questions for u before i begin my course thanks a lot god bless u

  • that was easy.

  • loved your 1 min video!!!!

  • thats hardcore

  • My next tax refund...a post lift

  • ok..i did my transmission on a 97 jeep grand cherokee 6 cylinders with a A500 transmission..It needed new clutches and i replace them all..alright well my question is the transmission is ready to install but when i turn the input shaft the output shaft doesn't turn..why? is it the oil it need first?.. will it become better once i put it on? ty

  • thats the hard way u would have done it from the side...just tilt the egnine down a lil take the tranny out from the bottom

  • Good work but bad video.

too much artefarkts because of bad compressing.

  • can you send me a video of that to me....cause u fast forward very fast i need a slow video...can u send to me

  • Fantastic. But could you do it just a BIT slower ???

I missed one of the steps.

  • where did you learn all this stuff? did you go to school for this or just self taught? I want to learn so bad

  • I went to UTI years ago. But that was expensive. Just go to a community college to get trained. Save your money.

  • your working the speed of light

  • yep....hahaha

  • heh cool, even added fooley :P

  • I love how it scraped the ground on the way out, chhhrrrrsss. haha

  • that was the garage door closing

  • man that was tight!

  • I couldn't imagine pulling transmissions/engines with wrenches. Probably take 5 times longer. The cars I worked on when I was in the buisness were from the 60's and 70's. These were like childs play compared to what you guys work on today.

  • I do these ones out the bottom and it takes about five hours.

  • BALLS !!!!

  • Damn I wish!

  • 69 Charger huh? When I was younger working in a trans shop I could pull that trans in about 15 minutes... About 25 or 30 to install.

  • bull

  • @banjolearner94 You gotta understand this is not done with channel locks and wrenches like some backyard mechanic. We had twin post lifts and impact guns that were used on just about every bolt. Any pre-85 rear drive vehicle is under an hour to pull unless you are hung over, slow, or just a noob.

  • Noob see you didnt say that you were using all of that sorry

  • Practice and prep, and all the right tools do it make perfect. How long would it take you doing it on the ground with no power tools and a cherry picker?

  • damn im so jealous. ill pay you to do mine! haha

  • can u post a vid of camry gasket seals replacement please?

  • i only post videos when one of my cars needs repairs. My camry doesn't need any gaskets replaced. But if it does...it will be on here.

  • thanks for the heads up

  • cars these days! with my 72 chevy pickup i could do that in a couple hours.

  • yeah..i can change the tranny in my 69 charger in a few hours.

  • shit my 81 took all day to get it out and its a standard its gonna take longer to put in that tranny takes at least two guys to move it lineing it up is gonna be a pain in the ass changeing the bell houseing reinstalling it today

  • @ComicalFerret 82 chevy pickup took bout couple hours to lol

  • slow down!

  • i have a 93 acura integra that i just picked up at a police auction last Wednesday for 79 bucks. b18 with mugen, hks, and tein parts galore! probably impounded for street racing and he couldn't keep up with court fees and bail and tickets. (just went through the same thing) only problem is extremely minor ny rust on passenger side Q.P. any ways my question is price wise what am i looking at for a 5 speed tranny swap. im fine with used as long as its not shit! and i can drop it in my self. thnx!

  • A five speed will be cheaper than a automatic. I got this one which is a used automatic for $600 bucks from EBAY. If i had bought one brand new it would have cost $2,000 bucks.

Just be careful if you go the cheap route like I did. I don't remember the name of the company i found though.

  • thanks bro.

  • dang you're good, i only replaced an intake gasket on my truck and it took me 6 hours...haahahahahahaha

  • this was great.what a hick

  • lol...i guess that would be the music

  • i just seen the video, i found that its much easier to pull it from the bottom of the vehicle

  • YUP ME TOO

  • RWD Easy

    FWD Even more Eazy

AWD Most arnt any harder then a FWD

  • why is all wheel drive much easier than rear Wheel drive?? Can you replace a 6 speed manual transmission to a 5 speed transmission car..??

  • Becouse it usally is the same set up as FWD and yes you can use a 5 speed insted of a 6 only if gear box is made for that type of car

  • But can you replace the 5 speed transmission with a 6 speed????Install a 6 speed transmission....is it possible?

  • Yes you can for sure but is this gearbox made for the engine type? If so and you done your research on what gearbox will mesh correct.Say if a Toyota carolla has a 5 spd but they also come with 6spd,you can change it to the 6spd box and should bolt straight on without any problems. The only difference is the internal gearing (closer gearing) Chears

  • @fpvshitsonhsv how is a FWD more easy? I think it's harder because there is less room to work on a FWD car vs. a RWD car or truck.

  • @arnoldt14 FWD you can access the box from the engine bay and can remove via the bonnet. Sure there is a little less room but once you remove everything the east west is very easy. Becouse of this you dont need to hoist the vehicle making it very easy. Also it can be done where the vehicle parked rather then moving it into the shop. Every man for their own but i like the East West jobs rather then North South ,just can get it done faster. Hate driving FWD cars though "Real cars push not pull" :)

  • i can do that but faster i just dont wanna

  • RWD Car Easy

    FWD Car Hard

    AWD Car A bad joke.

  • lol

  • would disagree on fwd cars, i generaly found them very easy with the exception of automatics which the one in this video is.

  • That looks like its a pain in the ass, just another reason why I love RWD cars, I can drop my E46 BMW's tranny in like 20min.

  • I hear that...thanks for the comment

  • god why a camry. if you can do a camry...you're very patient. i just finished a clutch on a v6 camry, god it was a pain. i did an auto v6 before and had to do the same as matt but a manual...ugh..i just cracked enough to do the clutch and slid over the tranny maybe 5 inches...

  • if only this video went into more detail, id be set

  • If you enjoyed this video please subscribe.

  • I pull out an Explorer trans in 15 minutes. A Taurus in 48 minutes. Anyone want to see? No Joke. Have a nice day!

  • Make a video. Of course 15 minutes is an eternity online.

  • i've done a lot of these. and its much easier underneith, but more dangerous. sub frame has to be lowered and on later model toyotas the whole subframe comes down

  • I wander.

We all know, that doing this in just 1 minute is just plain impossible.

But realistically, how long does it take to remove the trans. Just to remove only, how long does it take?

  • It took awhile on this one. it must of been 6 hours before I had it out.

  • Its NOT nessesary to remove the engine partly to get the trans is it???? Typically the trans are removed from under the car. On my 96 Max for instance, its easier to do underneath. BUT I guess on that car in video, its probably one of those that has 2 crossmembers instead of 1, and plus motor mounts are on the trans, not the engine.

On my 96 Max, I have only 1 crossmember, trans is completely clear of it. plus the mounts are attach to engine, not trans

  • Typically no, but i tried everything I could to get the tranny free. There was no way it would clear otherwise. The clearance was so bad that even after lifting the engine, I still had to unbolt the flexplate to lower it and vise versa.

I definately didn't have much fun, but it was cool cause i was able to make a video.

  • agree.. they don't know a camry. it notorious for space in the engine bay..it took me 8 hours just to do a clutch on camry..

  • lo i really thought it takes 1 min to do lol -.- that would be awsome if u can do in 1 min

  • Yeah it would!

  • You really need to cut back on caffiene.

  • Yeah, one two many redbulls on this shoot!

  • I hate front weel drives for this reason. gotta take the engine almost all the way out just to get to the tranny.. SUCKAS.

  • Definately... I was so %^&#$ as I got further into it. The job was a real pain. At least the video is cool to watch.

  • so you are in the seattle area? I need a custom tranny mount made for my rx7 .. interested?

  • No, I'm in the SF Bay Area. I pretty much have hung up my tools except for when I make these videos.

    Chappy

  • No doubt...most trannies by themselves cost more than 1k. Not to mention the labor.

    Chappy

  • how much would someone charge to replace a front wheel tranny automotic just labour also do u have to take it through the top like that ....like u had to lift out the motor ....cant u just do it from the side like take the wheel off etc

  • Every job is different. What people charge may be different as well. My advice is to do your homework and don't settle for the first price out there. Once you find a good mechanic, stick with him or her.

As to your other comment. I removed the tranny from the bottom actually. I had to jack the engine way up to get enough clearance too. There is no way it would fit through the wheel well on the side as I certainly would have done that.

    Chappy

  • alrite thanks man its a 94 intrepid its my car im gonna do it myself but i dont have the equipemet to lift the engine up like that maybe ill just jack the engine up with a jack maybe that will owrk who knows lol

  • You should buy a hanes repair manual. They are very helpful at figuring out the easiest way to remove any given tranny. I would suggest renting a tranny jack and possibly an engine hoist as most engines need to be supported while the tranny is removed.

  • ok thanks man ill try that

  • Good luck!

  • that car sucks to work on. nice job

  • that was fucking awsome!!!

  • thanks

  • I'm having car troubles...can you spare a minute or two?

  • Certainly....wassup?

  • YOUR MY IDOL LOL

  • ahhhh shucks....thanks

  • how long does this really take??

  • I did it in a weekend. The video would be boring If I didn't ad my own artistic twist however.

  • lol come and fix my car i got five minits to to get to my job

  • LOL.....good one

  • See I told you he was the Flash. Part time machanic, part time super hero.

  • LOLOLOL.....good one!

  • wow that was quick!

  • Yes it was! Thanks for the comment.

  • I have two 2001 ford taurus, One I bought it for parts, is not running (flooding victim, seize engine) and the other one is running but transmission slipping really bad. I wanted to install the transmission from the non-running car but the fluid smell like burnt The pevious owner told me that the only thing wrong was the engine But I dont trust him, My Q is: Does a Burnt fluid smell always means Bad transmission? Or should I take my chances?

  • A burnt fluid smell is not good. It means that the clutches were getting too hot and probably slipping. That doesn't mean the tranny is not salvagable however. I would drop the tranny oil pan and look to see if there are metal particles. If there is more than a teaspoon, then junk the tranny. If there isn't, you might (if your up to the task) replace the bands and clutches yourself and reseal the tranny with new seals and gaskets.

  • Or, you can do the real Crap Shoot...go to the wrecking yard and get a take out. Then the labor of doing the R & R.

Michael in Portland, Or. (Tech and Rebuilder)

  • Yeah, that is certainly an option. I found a company through ebay that finds used trannies from Japan. They tear them apart, re-seal them and dyno test them. The tranny only had 30,000 miles on it and cost me less than $500. It turned out to be a great deal.

    ChappyShowcase

  • hehe cool!

  • well i guess i want to do it can u give me a list of all the parts i need so i can buy them....thnx for ur help

  • hey man great vid ......i want to swap my automatic transmission to manuel i own a celica 2000 gts how much do u think it will b

  • It depends on whether or not you are going to do the work yourself. Also whether or not you want a used, refurbished, or new tranny.

  • no i cant do the work myself and i want a new trany

  • You should have to pay somewhere between $2,500 - $4,000. There is one other option...find a good used transmission from Japan. That could save you a $1,000 off the quote above.

  • I don't get it did you have 2 engine hoist; one for transmission one for engine? AWESOME WORK ON BOTH CARS!

  • Ohhh...yeah I used the engine hoist for both the engine and the tranny....just not at the same time. So just one hoist. The power of illusion with filmmaking made it look that way. Thanks for the comment.

  • If you liked this one; check out my other. RADICAL ENGINE REBUILD.

  • Is there anything that Matt Chapman can't do? Here is a film-maker who can change out an automatic transmission in 90 seconds. I love the clang of the tools along with the music.

    Great job Matt!

  • Yeah...not kidding. This guy is a phenom. Hollywood look out once he breaks in!

  • For sure!

  • There is something I can't do. I can't seem to find any financial security in this crazy filmmaking biz.

  • awesome matt!

  • Chapman Digital Presents a cool tranny remove and replace in 90 seconds. This time lapse piece was done in 48 hours on a 93 Toyota Camry. Please leave comments and give this piece five stars if you enjoyed.
