  • nice

  • erik is insane! absolutely love it, would love to get certed by him or marc mcfann

  • This is so much skill...its unbelievable

  • How about James Wilks? Ultimate fighter winner that represents catch wrestling? IDIOT!

  • some more UFC fighters for the dumbass above: Shean Sherk UFC champion, Ken Shamrock. I know they are not huge names but they all trained under Erik Paulson. LMAO! IDIOT!!!!

  • All these dumbasses on here fail to realize that Erik has a jiu jitsu black belt under Rigan Michado. Oh! and another catch wrestler in the UFC under Erik is a small name guy Broch Lesner. LOL Hes not that known. LMAO

  • How about Josh Barnett heavy weight UFC champion? LOL dumbass. Apparently you wear tapout and got into MMA when the UFC got popular.

  • EP is awesome!

  • Head arm choke, Americana and Crucifix are jiujitsu names for the first three.

  • Kid* "Damnit Dad, Why did you sign me up for this shit?"

  • I love Catch Wrestling. And Erik Paulson is the best in the US. Awesome vid, and awesome instructor.

  • Okay I'm not trying to troll or anything, but there is a guy in my BJJ class who uses these techniques and sometimes wins..... Only thing is, he said he's been wrestling all his life and whatnot, but he's also 190 pounds. He is literally the heaviest guy at my gym. If it weren't for the fact that he is just plain stronger than me (I'm only 145 pounds), I am positive I could beat him. I beat his 20 year old son that's 160 pounds, but its just him that I have a problem with

  • @SuperBrokenfoot when you say he wins, do you mean during competitive rolling or flow rolling?

  • @SuperBrokenfoot Sometimes it can actually be easier to get stuff on bigger guys do to the fact they are usually slower, less flexible, and things like chokes tighten up easier so he may just be better than you and could potentially have an easier time if you were larger. It also could just be that his particular style is different than everyone else's and that simple uniqueness makes it difficult for you. Or it could just be he's much stronger. Lot's of possibilities.

  • @SuperBrokenfoot I actually prefer rolling with guys a little bigger than myself for that reason (not a LOT bigger of course). learn some leg lock chains and you may find an edge, most guys are suckers for that stuff and they work whether they are big or small (especially toe holds and straight ankle locks). Incidentally Paulson has great videos for that too.

  • @SuperBrokenfoot , jiu jitsu and "rolling" has nothing to do with weight or strength. If he is bigger than you and he beats you, then you’re just not as good as him. I get worked by higher level guys who weight much less than I do. The whole basis of jiu jitsu is being able to defeat a much larger opponent. That’s Helios whole perspective on why he developed the techniques he did.

  • the poor kid..hahaha

  • Maeda Kano

  • my opponent is 20 pounds bigger than me i am a junior going up against a senior what is a move i could do.

  • @6k2umy run.

  • Catch wrestling just blew my mind...

  • Does anyone put moves together as well as Erik - seriously? Scratch that, does anyone know as many moves as Erik?

  • @OctoBox Carlos Newton does. He subbed Erik Paulson in 41 seconds.

  • Erik: these are secret moves!

    *looks at view count*

    Me: hmmmm not that secret

  • Feel bad for the guy

  • Wtf lol EXTREMELY complex...alls I caught was the nose clench headlock, reverse armbar, and V lock...

  • la wwe ha rovinato il wrestling

  • I like the first move. I use it in BJJ and it works well.

  • I would love to see someone represent catch wrestling in UFC.

  • @curtisb3000 Randy Couture kind of did in his last few fights as he embraced what it could offer. James Wilks is a Combat Submission Wrestler under Erik Paulson, and Matt Mitrione and Brock Lesnar have been using Catch for a bit. Maybe when Josh Barnett comes over from Strikeforce, that'd be really interesting.

  • @curtisb3000 Josh Barnett ?

  • @curtisb3000

Sakuraba did already. He beat the whole Gracie lineage.

  • @curtisb3000 another rep of catch wrestling is James Wilks. Not to big of a name but he won the Ultimate fighter. Dumbass! LOL

  • @curtisb3000 How about James Wilks? Ultimate Fighter winner under Erik Paulson. Dumbass.

  • @djkristang you have 3 posts, all about James Wilks....

  • Is catch/submission wrestling the same as no gi BJJ?

  • @tansin9 similar but not the same. Catch Wrestling was an influence on Maeda who took part in many matches as a representative of Kano Jujitsu. He taught the Gracies Jujitsu which had influence from Catch Wrestling, as well as Boxing and Savate for the combatives part. I think Renzo Gracie mentions this in his book.

  • i need 4 years to learn that lol

  • Great stuff!

  • Great job demonstrating for us. Your style of teaching is excellent, and your moves are easy to maneuver. A fighter can improve 10 fold with your techniques.

  • guys pretty small for him, dont ya think? take it easy brutus...

  • its not secret anymore not that it was in the first place

  • Nice Technique. Paulson would be cool to train with.

  • @Raizanvalor I was just thinking that, I'm gonna see where he's based out of.

  • why when i talk to people on the street about grappling, they never give wrestling any credit for submissions, locks, throws, chokes,or breaks.its alway it came from jiujitsu,or asia or brazil, wrestling is as old a combat art as anyother and know bjj borrowed alot from wrestling and judo

  • @bummercal because wrestling, or more specifically freestyle, greco-roman wrestling (the two most common types of wrestling practiced in the US) have no submissions. Catch wrestling is a submission based art, but not as well known. BJJ borrowed more from judo than wrestling. just saying lols

  • @toolfan92 Brazilian gay jitsu did not borrow anything from Judo. BJJ is not even JuJitsu, it's just diluted Judo...In the sport of Judo there are certain techniques that are illegal due to safety reason, but it does not mean that Judoka don't get to learn the techniques..The gracie are dishonorable and are guilty of plagiarism. Its sahmefull

  • @franciscoreatas11 i do get what you mean by BJJ "copying" from Judo. Let me put is this way, TKD and Muay Thai are both stand up striking arts, do practioners of each style learn the same techniques and kick the same way? TKD for eg, snapping kicks, chambered kicks, punches from hip (in kata), MT, full on roundhouse kicks, boxing guard and punching, same area of fighting (standup) but different focus on the various aspects.

  • @franciscoreatas11 just like Judo vs Bjj vs whatever. All contain common aspects. Just different ways on how the techniques are used.

  • @franciscoreatas11

B.S. Carlos went to a school and, learned from Maeda. Once you learn something, it's yours to do what you want with. When Maeda left, only a dork would think they should stop. They continued and, were right to call it jiujitsu and, not Judo, since Judo is a philosophy and, way of life, not just a collection of techniques. Jujitsu is about the techniques and, since what they learned came from Japan, they were telling you where it came from. They just put their imprint on it.

  • wow fuck

  • WOW

  • Paulson is one of a kind!

  • Catch wrestling is underrated. I didn't even really know what it was until I saw Josh Barnett doing a bunch of odd moves in a match against Bret Rogers. I was like, "What the heck is that?" It looked awesome. Man, was it ever effective. Then I heard the announcer say that Barnett practiced "catch wrestling". The more I study catch wrestling, the more I realize it has a rich history. It really is interesting. It should be practiced more. Expert catch wrestlers are very difficult to beat.

  • good shit

  • Anyone varsity 112

  • I'm sorry, but maybe I need to be put into submissions like these by pros, cause when people try to put these kind of annoying submissions ( I say annoying cause it hurts, but not enough for me to suffer serious injuries, just enough to piss me off) I just get pissed and start over powering and dominating. Even though I'm taught not to do that (BJJ) haha, I'm not bashing on catch wrestling, but I just don't see a reason to tap from its submissions. Can anyone explain in depth?

  • @SuperBrokenfoot If they are just annoying to you then the technique is not being done correctly. Finding real catch wrestlers who know their stuff is hard to find.

  • One of those videos that just amaze me that people are so good at this stuff. Great moves and interesting. Thanks for the vid.

  • at 1:18 i thought he broke his fuckin' wrist

  • i have never seen a better grappler than Erik Paulson on youtube.. he's just so quick and creative and all that... awesome!

  • beast mode

  • this shit is bad azz. I never want to go to the ground cause when if that happens it would be my luck that it would be a guy like this.

  • Bet he gives a great bear hug

  • That poor guy, lmbo! He's getting whooped in this demo, lol

  • As usual ANOTHER GREAT EP VID

    THANKS

  • Anyone notice Erick pinching the nose in a hold ?? what the point ?? and is it legal in mma ??

  • It came from wigan in england a tuff northen town the place was called the snake pit ?

  • Strange how the uk ent better at wrestling being as Catch Wrestling originated there ? Josh Barnett trains Catch Wrestling and often points out in videos that its origins are in England

  • @EBTerriers but the gracie family just pointed out that england while great at standup fighting are severly behind in grappling. and ufc president pretty much cosigned on the statement

  • i know this is Catch wrestling, but can the first couple be done while wearing the bjj or judo gi?

  • @pedro90 I don't see why not. The reverse arm-triangle is I think sometimes known as a 'Howdy' in BJJ. When you wrap the arm you could always grab inside the back of their collar I guess? Play around with it and let us know :)

  • why don't i ever see this stuff in any of the hundreds of mma matches i've watched?

  • @romacki Because hundreds of fighters haven't trainded under the awesomeness that is Erik Paulson :P

  • @romacki Sakuraba was the first person to defeat Royce Gracie and he used catch wrestling

  • I started bjj last summer, but this looks awesome..

  • so so tight! amazing technique

  • Amazing vocab of moves! WOW!!!!!!

  • I thought I knew what 4 meant but I guess not. lol There's like 20 moves in this vid.

  • What prevents the guy on the bottom to breathe through his mouth when you squeeze his nose?

  • @TheBoyIllz Because his shoulder is smothering his mouth.

  • @MDAC1012 I don't mean to come of like that, but depending on your opponents arms, is that really a reliable method? Reason why I ask is we tried this the other day at our open mat, and it did work to a certain extent with the guys with bigger arms. But a lot of skinny guys couldn't pull it off. Even the guys who were bigger, had problems sometimes, cuz the guy beneath just wiggles his chin to find a position where he can breath through his mouth.

    Just saying.

  • @TheBoyIllz I didn't think you were coming off any particular way. You had a fair question and I was only responding based on my limited understanding of the technique. No problems.

  • @TheBoyIllz If you can get their own arm to go under their chin and lock the position in tight, you can use that to force their jaw shut. It doesn't completely cut off the airflow but it can restrict it considerably. Also once you have a tight grip, walk the hand of the arm that's under-hooking his head across the mat until you're bending his body. This puts him in an unnatural position collapsing one side of his chest making it even harder to breathe.

  • @KJGould Yeah I thought of that too actually, I'll try that tomorrow at our open mat session! Thanks for the tip! :)

  • the first one doesnt work against fexible opponent. Otherwise, good stuff.

  • @MursuTheMan The first one isn't a stretch move. If effects the diaphragm making it difficult to breathe.

  • Erik's got a book out on catch wrestling history that he's selling on his website. Rough and Tumble it's called. Very good. Not a whole lot of technique but a whole history of grappling.

  • What I would give to train with Erick. Does anyone in this channel knows if he'll come to Texas in 2011? South Texas hopefully?

  • Catch wrestling always hurts, it´s not like amateur wrestling. They beat u from head to toe.. I did it twice, and no more. Every position change he would hurt me. I respect anyone who could that.

  • Those are some great moves Erick Paulson has some crazy moves on the ground!

  • man hes really going at it, the kids in pain

  • anyone that train under billy robinson i am scared of.

  • Where in Fullerton?

    \

  • I commend you for this amazing video. Thank you very much. Have you yourself tried using this as a drill? ---I think it'd be great to practice! =)

  • also i know he said four moves but that seemed like almost 10 to me lol :p

  • Hey Guys,

I often get into that head/neck crank from the mount. (after the keylock/americana/Vlock)...Can I dismount like I am transitioning to side control, but hook the leg on the way over to end up with that same submission?? Any thoughts or feedback?? If there is any footage out there showing something like this would appreciate a point in the right direction.

  • @stuartmoran69 I think that might be a round about way of doing it. It'd be better / easier to go from mount to side control first, then hook the leg. You also have to be careful they don't regain half-guard either.

  • IMPRESSIVE !

  • THIS IS WAY BETTER, TYPE IN STREETMMAGEAR

  • lol, poor guy, he was just taping the whole time lol

  • fuck, this guy is scary.

    those are damn legit moves

  • He taps out 2 fast to see what they are doing

  • The faking mount to figure 4 was genius!!!!!

  • This is coming from someone who does jiu jtisu primarily, but Erik Paulson has got to be the best player in catch wrestling. Or at least DAMN close...

  • nice where did erik wrestle

  • For everybody who says wrestling is gay then why are you watching videos of people wrestling?

  • fucking animal

  • I'd love to learn catch wrestling...

  • Did I see a Fujiwara Armbar in there??

  • @elswanno Yep

  • this guy is a phenom!!!!

  • That somehow seemed like more than four moves. I sure as hell ain't complaining though. :-)

    Erik loves his T-shirts.

  • What a submission genious!

  • its not too hard to pull off submissions when the guys is just laying there like a star fish

  • @jtbullfitghter Your right! We should all start "teaching" new material to our students aganist fully resistant uki's.. I am sure the students will learn faster with your method! LOL

  • my eyes are bleeding! ..help!!

  • Good stuff, I learned similar stuff from Gene lebell and Gokor

  • Is this legal for school wrestling?

  • @TheCorruptGFx No it's not, but it would be pretty funny if you started smashing subs on the next time you're on the mat.

  • this spot is right by my job..would love to take classes there if I didn't commute...

  • Good god that was INCREDIBLE.

  • Erik Paulson's a pretty good communicator. I could see him cracking jokes at a political rally.

  • Damnnnnn catch wrestling is the shit.

  • god i wanna learn catch so bad. stuck with bjj for now.

  • Paulson is a genius and CSW might be one of the best kept secrets out there. I would LOVE to be able to train there, and I train with 3X Mundial Black Belt champ now!

  • Catch wrestling is so very beautiful and extremely effective when done well with competency and spirit, the seamless transitions and flow demonstrated here make one incredibly hard to beat on the ground, and reflect well in the stand up game too.

  • are these moves llegal in wrestling???

  • @SmyDMF1 No, this is real catch-as-catch-can wrestling, if by 'wrestling' you mean WWE or TNA style works, that style is an only-for-show version of catch wrestling, which is a root martial art and is very, very real. Watch the above video, if those holds were applied in a real wrestling ring where pinfalls counted as a scoring condition, few WWE or TNA performers would know how to escape them and would instantly be defeated.

  • @Zeus184 i mean in high school wrestling is that llegal?

  • @SmyDMF1 Oh, High School wrestling...I'm afraid I don't know, but I wouldn't try any real Catch wrestling techniques in amateur wrestling, that would be too dangerous.

  • this shit is brutal

  • ouuu this is BRUTAL!!!

  • yea but it dont go that smoothly in actual fightin speed... some of the moves do but catch is all about technique that was pretty advanced catch too

  • THis shit blows my mind

  • Eric paulson is the man

  • thank you alot for taking youre time ! you helped me alot !

  • man i would love to train at erik paulsons gym too bad im in northern california

  • @hedges1 you're closer then me! I'd move to the OC to train at Paulsons!

  • Damn, that's some good stuff right there.

Is there a difference between Catch and Submission wrestling, or are they both the same thing but some people just call it one or the other?

  • @berner Submission Wrestling is a fairly generic term, and can be made up of multiple grappling arts. It tends to be used for 'no gi' competitions and can have judokas, wrestlers, samboists, BJJ etc taking part. Catch developed as a style in the North of England (Catch As Catch Can, from Lancashire) and spread to North America, throughout Europe, and into Japan. It's the grandfather of amateur folkstyle wrestling and (for better or worse) Pro Wrestling.

  • Much more useful on the streets than BJJ.

  • @Svittidiu thats not a very informed thing to say. BJJ is very very similar to this. after all, the body can only move and lock out into so many positions. so logically this and many other grappling styles will have moves that look almost identical. The street effectiveness will depend on the application, not the style.

  • This guy is Brock Lesnars Submission Fighting coach. Hes the reason Brock pulled that victory from Carwin. Good work coach Paulson

  • nice!!!!

  • Hold your opponent's nose? Really dude.....

  • @open3rdeye Catch wrestling is grimy like that. It's like street bjj

  • I honestly want to just drop everything and go train under Paulson in Catch Wrestling.

  • THIS IS GREAT!!! i will definitely be working on this...i dont like any one discipline over another...if it works i take it and use...GREAT VID...Thanx!!

  • this go back to the days of ed the strangler lewis . if the shooters were alive today( bill robinson stu hart lou thesz etc) they would had no problem against today fighters

  • @florand umm i think billy robinson is still alive

  • @superschmuck he is? my bad bro. did you read ric flairs book. he said in his book that most wrestlers hated bill robinson's guts cause he would fuck em up. he even hooked the iron sheik when he was verne gagne trainee.he got him on his back while hooking and fucking his shoulder up.
