Hey ari, i was wondering if you have a video on how to counter this move, as someone used this on a friend during a competition and actually snapped his arm
I believe you can do a key lock that is very similer to this if someone gables their hands while your attempting an armbar, ive had it done to me but i never managed to ask the guy how he did it and ive been regretting it since then, ive looked for a vid on youtube and sub101 but i cant find it, any ideas guys? BTW! submissions 101 is awesome, there cleary alot of people that youve helped out alot with their game, me included and i live all the way in texas! lol
actually there is a vid of what i was talking about on the channel, the sambo steve counter to an armbar, its actually not similar to this at all i dont think
@AintDoneYet123 i doubt it. americana is based on pinning the wrist down, then creating a lever with your forearm under his elbow. standing, you cant pin the wrist down and there's no leverage.
I am a white belt in bjj and I did this during a sparring match without even knowing if it would work or not, and it worked beautifully. After that, I checked out this video and saw that I didn't hook my feet but still nailed it. Oh well, still worked!
Ari... i feel like you get alot of crap... i just want to let you know that i appreciate your videos... you have inspired me to become a better fighter
I love the kesa gatame position., when ever I establish side control., it the first position I go to, from there I have the straight armbar., and of course this beautiful keylock., scarf and twister side control all day
I also learned a straight-arm submission from this position. It hurts like a juji gatame, and you use your legs to do it. Bend the knees to lock it in place. I didn't find a video of it, so I thought I'd post.
btw it's pronounced keh sah GAH tah "may" <-- like the month, not "me" and the accent is on the "gah" not the "tah"... sorry to be picky but you slaughtered the word... like you slaughtered your friend there... cool move!
@Submissions101 Well don't sweat it the two black belts and 4 brown belts I train with all pronounce it the same way that you did.I guess it could be our MN accent!
i hate how some of these comments come from kids who think they know everything about everything, acting and speaking like they know everything about the world playing hardcore behind a computer screen. Just dont argue with professionals, theyre showing us how to do this because they know what theyre doing, just leave it at that. i know this is unrelated but i just wanted to point it out.
This is vicious !! I got caught in this in my last tournament dislocated my elbow and pulled ligaments. I felt no real pain till it popped i actually thought i was getting out of it as i was bumping and slipping my arm out.
@punahawaiipball A key lock is a general term that has nothing to do with gi or nogi. A key lock is also called an Americana, hammer lock or ude garami and means bending the arm at a 90 degree angle.
@Submissions101 acually ude garami means the certain position of the arm not the bending of the arm. The acual goshen jiu jitsu technique of this is that once you get into this postion you do a forward roll, tearing the SHOULDER, not the elbow.
I was taught this lock in judo practice many years ago, but for some reason it doesn't seem to feature much in traditional judo teaching. My instructor said it was legal provided the pressure is applied to the elbow not the shoulder.
If you rotate over towards the opponents face as he reaches for your face and apply a key lock on the opposite arm, you eill destroy the arm/shoulder your legs are holding. You must turn your hips balistically! Only for the street!
a better submission i find from kesa is simply to place their arm over your thigh of the bottom leg, hold it there then put the palm of the foot of your upper leg onto his outstretched wrist and push down.
A good tip i heard. Don't tense up when performing kesa gatame when they are trying to escape. Just keep your head down and everytime they inhale you breath out and relax.
Dead people are heavier than alive people. Be a dead weight and because your so lose and heavy you restrict their breathing big time. I have seen people submit others with this.
I assume the "Kesa Gatame" is the "scarf hold" I find it rediculously easy to get into...once in side control lift the elbow closest to you and shot your leg through to were your in the position the video starts in. :)
I submited a guy with this move in my first ever bjj fight, first i made a single leg takedown to kesa gatame and then i went straight for the submission, and it worked! It was all over in under one minute!
wow thxs 4 the vid i dont take classes i just watch videos and i have been looking 4 a perfect move to do right after the headlock takedown a wrestling move cuz i took wrestling in high skool and that move iz perfect cuz i can do it right after with out making any big movements
Try to keep your arms in when your mounted and attempt an escape..(submissions 101 has them!) Dont stress though man..its better to roll with people better than you! You learn more that way!!!
usualy when people try to do ANY submission on my arm, ill try to grab my arm, with my opposite hand. for example, roll to your side, with opposite hand hold ur arm from goin in the direction to make you tap. im also 6'4...meaning my arm length is above average. hopefuly this helps tho.
if you are being pinned by kesa gatame, the first thing you should do is twist your torso to face him. Your body weight shift and torso is much stronger than his arms.
This will loosen his grip and create some space to escape. You can use your hands to push his back and roll away.
Alternatively, once you have faced his back, you can bear hug him and bridge him, getting him into the kesa gatame he just got you into ;)
you should check out : Masterclass Judo 2 DVD Set by Toshikazu Okada. He's one of the most experienced people in the world of judo at age 92 i think. i had gone to a seminar where he and hal sharp were teaching and they were showing multiple arm locks, chokes, throws, muscle crushers and escapes. He will truly amaze anyone who goes to his seminars
Basic stuff from Judo here. Ashi Gyaku Ude Garame. You can go for an even simpler straight armbar with your legs from this position. Ashi Juji Gatame I believe it's called.
Would you think it's easier or more risky to go for the kata-gatame arm triangle when they get their arm free? That's the one I usually go for, and I'm wondering if there's a trade-off between this and that, or if it's just another tool for the box.
this looks like it would also be quite effective from the pillow hold variation of kesa gatame. It can also be a good lead into waki gatame on the other arm if he somehow gets his elbow between your legs or some other block or escape.
I like to S-grip my hands and pull the head to the opposite side of his body, it seems like you don't have to extend your hips so much that way. 5 stars anyway!
There's a counter for this.. where the dude in white (in the video) will straighten his arm.. but that's fine keep it straight.. and keep your right leg bent.. now take your left leg and put your foot on the palm of his hand.
I hope i've explained it well enough.. have a go, it's reallu effective and hurts like hell if you do it too quick so be carefull haha.
I've used this a bunch of times from this position and just thought I was just being clever as I've never been taught it. Locking the legs is a nice refinement I haven't been doing though. I'll have to get in and drill this a little cleaner to make it into a high-percentage move and not just something I catch from time to time. Thanks for posting.
Great move, but my training partner has...not so much developed, but found a nice little counter to it :-/
He takes his leg farthest from the opponents body and loops it around the head, he then figure 4's it, and while holding on to the aggressors arm, he cranks the head down and pulls the arm toward him.
Idk if its a legitamate move or not, but he didnt have the cojones to come here and tell ya'll so here i am. If you guys dont have a name for it, Do you mind calling it the "Jo-Jo" :) ?
but by keeping your head away you change your balance backwards and then the guy under can buckle up trowing the guy on top foward making space and maybe even getting escape..
how come every1 who comments on this sort oif stuff is a fucking experton bjj whats point watchin it if u already know u fuck ups
