One helluva good job, but stiil, PINZA was the greatest for me in this aria! As for "greatest bass" of the century, Siepi is in the top10, but surpassed by Ghiaurov & Christoff, Pinza & Pasero.
Gra! I'm a bass, but siepi is legendary. His voice just reverberated around any opera house or concert hall, in an unbelievable fashion. Perhaps Boris Christoff defeated him in technique, however, but this man gave him a run for his money.
honestly, I don't think Boris defeated Siepi in technique. Maybe is just a personal opinion, bu tu can't compare two such figures and it is no way of putting scales between siepi and Christoff
Irraggiungibile !!!! Massimo Valzolgher
You seem a little slow so let me clue you in- nobody gives a shit whether or not you approve of this or any other performance. Intergalactic is a word that never has and never should be used in reference to music- it actually refers to astronomy which probably comes as a suprise to someone with your low level of intellligence. Now shut the fuck up and go do your homework.
The unfortinate thing is that any moron can start an account and start talking out of their ass- which you have clearly proven. Im actually shocked you even figured out how to do that. Certified interglalactic doesnt mean anything- its a stupid saying that an idiot is trying very hard to catch on- and it aint working asshole.
Im willing to bet you only know a fraction of what you pretend to know on youtube about mustc let alone opera- which, by the way is clearly illustrated by you very coincidental willingness to leave stupid comments on only the most popular performances that are actually only here to be watched and no longer need jackasses to aprove of them.
A Truly magnificent voice and commanding presence. I find it very impressive that he was able to speed up the entire orchestra from 2:55 to 3:08 in order to make the long held note. Not many singers could have accomplished it.
..incredible...smooth, stylish....what a teacher for other singers...and yet, I must also own the rougher Pinza version....when Pinza says ella giammai m'amo...in the other aria... you can tell he means it
Like most of the other folks who have been good enough to comment here, I think that Siepi is the greatest bass of the century. To hear him at age sixty-two bringing such effortless elegance to this aria is an absolute joy and something to be treasured. He sang the role of Don Giovanni almost one hundred times at the Met alone with a number of excellent Leporellos, such as Corena and Flagello and his version is as ironic and sardonic as the best. Thanks for posting!
@verdiguy My friend, a bass can sing deep into his 70s or even into his 80s. So at 62 he should still sing well, which he DOES!. I totally agree with you that "he is the greatest bass of the century". A colleague of mine (Daniel Bonilla-Torres - google please) have studied with him here in Europe, and it is unbelievable, how Siepi has helped him.
@gallferi True. Basses are like champagne, lyric tenors like cheese, and wagner singers like good wine, as I always say. Basses get a little better as they get older, lyric tenors never last too long past their sell-by-date, but the wagner singer has to be old or ther's no hope for them!
@gallferi True. Basses are like champagne, lyric tenors like a nice cheese, and wagner singers like good wine, as I always say. Basses get a little better as they get older, lyric tenors never last too long past their sell-by-date, but the wagner singer has to be old or ther's no hope for him!
Such smooth, elegant, refined singing and a very musical, stylish, non-exaggerated interpretation. It is very different in tone and style from Chaliapin's recordings of the aria, which I also love.
I knew Siepi only as Don Giovanni, I didn't know he'd sung Leporello as well, but this is great! I know Furlanetto as well and I think he's also a great Leporello.
WOW!!!! This is the most EFFORTLESS version of this aria I have ever seen! Most Leporello's are sweating, straining, and off tempo. Siepi sings this aria like watching someone do a back stroke in a pool. It's so smooooooooooth and beautiful! Siepi is the BEST EVER. He will always be my favorite.
Everyone should also check out Ferruccio Furlanetto on youtube! Siepi was Ferruccios idol. Check out his version of the Aria!
You forgot to say that here he was 63, after 40 years of on-stage singing. In spite of that, his voice was still magnificent and better than any other we nowadays have.
Among other basses and baritones (not to mention that usually Leporello is sung by baritones and you can't find anymore basses to sing this piece, at least not in such a natural manner ) he is definitely the very best. His voice is deep and powerful, but here, most beautiful and most impressive,
his voice is so warm, clean
and smooth
and by the way, you can't hear any roughness in his voice. Siepi-number one in my opinion

@verdiguy I definitely agree. The only other basses I think who match him are Samuel Ramey and George London; all extraordinary in their own way.
