Wow, I feel totally lucky to have seen them live around this same time period... I was only 14 yrs old, it was awesome. Been a lifelong fan of theirs and other McLaren bands...
I agree... Annabella Lwin keeps trying to make comeback after comeback, but, she somehow can't get back on the train anymore...
The last decent thing she did was CARSEX... the stuff she does nowadays really really sucks and pales very much in comparison to what Bow Wow Wow was all about...
I grew up listening to Bow Wow Wow and the other punk bands of the time. I liked that they were independent and against the mainstream. Today my stepson asked me to get rid of the clothes that he no longer wears. He had bags full of sean jon, ecko, g-unit and the other brands that mtv tells him that he should wear. I try to tell him that the only purpose that mtv now serves is to separete him from his money but he doesn't believe me. His generation is lost to consumerisn and doesn't know it
@Mirv41 Here here. Back when i was a lad, if you wanted memorabilia of yr fav band you went down the market and bought some badges or t-shirt off some dodgy looking bloke.
@Mirv41 You are so full of it lady. Bow Wow Wow was post-punk and a hell of a lot more than a punk band. All of their releases were with major labels. You might have listened to them but, you certainly weren't into them. Malcolm Mclaren had something to do with the band and consumerism and hip-hop but, you wouldn't know anything about that, would you? You post a comment to rag on your stepson for being into today's youth culture like you are better than him and the 80's were better.
@nkmcfrln I know about Malcom, his store, Culture Club, etc. Did I listen to Bow Wow Wow? Yes. Did I ever see them live? Yes. Do I care what label released their albums? No. I understand that today's youth culture is different from mine, but they are targeted by advertisers like no other generation before, and MTV plays a huge role in that. A lot of Hip Hop Videos send the message that being ostentatious is cool. It's only cool if you can actually afford it. Don't believe the hype!
@nkmcfrln My argument isn't that 80's music is better than music of today, but that today's youth are being sold a bill of goods and don't know it., much more than youth of the '80's were. Today men wear AXE because marketers tell them it will get them laid, whereas most women will tell you AXE smells like crap. That is just part of what MTV does today. Which is better, a corporation that pushes something you like,or a corporation that pushes something that it tells you you should like?
@Mirv41 " I liked that they were independent and against the mainstream. " You don't care what label released their albums? They were never independent and that's one of the two reasons you gave for being a fan. Like I said before, you're full of it. "Ostentatious" LOL
@nkmcfrln When I said "independent", I wasn't talking about freedom from record labels, I was talking about not going with the flow.. I'm obviously not the musical purist that you are. Get a life and take your internet bullying somewhere else.
@nkmcfrln I never realized that my comments would strike such a nerve. "You might have listened to them but, you certainly weren't into them". You sound like Kate Hudson in Almost Famous. I do not live my life vicariously through bands, slash I listen to music and I like music and I have my own life that does not involve some band. maybe you should try curling to get rid of some of your pent up hostility, slash.
@Mirv41 you're sending me long winded messages in bunches after i've finished sending you any and now you're spying on me. do you want to stop? i was going to ask you before.
@nkmcfrln An apology would be nice. However, I alreaty told you to take your internet bullying someplace else. I suggest that in the future, you ASK someone what their comments mean before you bash them, rather than assume that you know. Spying ay? I just read what you put out there for all to see, slash.
"Bow Wow Wow were a 1980s New Wave band created by Malcolm McLaren to promote his and business partner Vivienne Westwood's New Romantic fashion lines" - 1st line off Bow Wow Wow's Wiki entry.
Just saying.. it's been that way since forever pretty much.. it's much more about preference than anything.
I remember she was only a few years older than I was in 1982 when I first hear/saw them. I was in the punk scene, but only the guys had mohawks at that time. I was so envious that she had the balls to be in a band at that age. I was in Jr. High and had hair all one length cuz mom wouldn't let me cut my hair. when I saw her, I cut bangs then lopped my hair to my shoulder, then shaved a mohawk..it was grand, my mom freaked, but I was still able to get a job after school, so she cooled her jets.
some guy hopped on stage at one show i was at and tried to kiss anabel and the guitarist clobbered the guy on the head with his giutar. rough stuff in early 80s punk scene. the untouchables were headling that show, who were soft
That is what I always liked so much about Annabella... you could look but NOT touch... and if you did, you paid a high price... Women in those days would NOT let themselves be patted or grabbed... and the likelihood that you would be send packing with a black eye or picking up your teeth off the floor was 100%. I mean, Siouxsie has often knee-ed blokes in the groin!
It is just so naff to grab people... and is statutory assult/ABH in Britain and rightly so.
I only remember George singing with them once at The Rainbow Finsbury Park. I'm guessing he sang 'Mile High Club' and I think he was billed as Captain Lush? The band were toying with the idea of replacing Annabella but got bored with the idea, oh and forgot to tell George that he was no longer required. Shabby! I think that galvanised George to get a band of his own and make it. Would have been a great idea to keep them both in the band.
While I'm on the subject, the first time I saw Bow wow wow was at a The Cedar Club in Birmingham England, it was only their seventh gig and all they had to play was the stuff on 'My Cassette Pet', 'C30C60C90Go' and the B-side, 'Sun Sea And Piracy' which amounted to about twenty minutes so they played a few again to eke out a full half hour. I went back stage and talked to them all except Matthew who had a permanent scowl on his face! R.I.P. Matthew.
Annabella in that Worlds End Pirate stuff, before the shaved Iroquois hair, looked to me just like Paddington Bear! Ridiculously young but very cute! They were one of the best bands of all time, nobody ever sounded like them, God knows Adam tried!
I believe Annabella was only 14 when she was spotted in 'the launderette" and 15 when it all "happened". which is why her mom freaked...Had this been a year later, when she'd be 16, there would not have been anything he rmom could have done, as A.L. would have been able to decide for herself... and none of it would have been a scandal...
Republica broke up in 1999, and I believe Dave left even before that. He's done some other music since then, but as far as any one can tell he's semi-retired and writing novels. It was Matthew that died in 1995. Leigh and Annabella have been working as Bow Wow Wow in the last few years, but according to her friends, Annabella is currently focusing on her solo material.
Leroy lives in LA....He was always one of the greatest bass players ever.
btw.....When I met them the first time...Mathew was a total JERK...everybody else in the band was extremely nice. Also I saw them a few years ago...Annabella still is super fine! though no longer 15
there was no "before." this band was a malcolm mclaren "creation." after the demise of the sex pistols, malcolm (who managed adam & the ants) took david (drums) and matthew (guitar) from adam, and created bow wow wow with leigh gorman (bass) and the (at the time of her discovery) then 14-year old employee of a dry cleaners, annabella.

Does anybody know if there's any videos on Youtube from a 1982 new year's gig they did live on MTV? Would love to see that again.

Gwen Stefani owes her career to Annabella. Lee Gorman broke the ground for Flea to get rich. What a fabulously innovative band.

Yes... A.L. always looked very cutesy... a punk Lolita... clad in Westwood... Very sexy... (and I am 100% gay! but she was really HOT!)
Adam Ant was just too poncy... as all New Romantic-anything was... it really had NO BALLS and was very contrived.
macintosser 2 years ago
Well... MacLaren was and possibly still is, a spineless coward and opportunist and never one for fine manners...
Still... in terms of what he instigated and generated, he must be credited with GENIUS.
