Gorgeous collaboration & Richard knows a great female voice...blessed with rare vocal quality, Karen has a voice that stands as one of the greatest & most unique over past fifty years, after Karen, Richard successfully paired with the tremendous Dusty Springfield then this gem with Petula Clark...the guy knows a great voice when her hears one and Petula sounds awesome...thanks for posting this rare treat!
I like Petula Clark and the complimentary things she has said about Karen, but I think her voice is not that good! It sounds old, and not very pleasant to the ear, but maybe that has to do with age. I do like her song DOWNTOWN then!! But she seems like a sweet person...
We may never know that. If we feel sorry and sad that Karen passed away so young and so many good things that she would have had ahead of her, I'm sure Richard was a million times devastated about it. There's only so much we can do and the rest would depend on the person we would want to help. I guess there's no one to blame. RIP Karen.
@paisleygerry --No, the actual truth is PG, -Richard wanted the best for Karen, he knew the trauma and deception Karen went through in her marriage, to a guy not of the high-character she knew in her brother. You'd have to be in his shoes, Karen and Rich idealized each other, yet she had a yearn to be another Julie'Andrews, while Rich knew her frail-constitution was not up to it, -that a ruthless showbiz-industry would destroy her. Sadly, -if she'd listened to her bro, she'd be alive now...!!!
Wow! I never knew someone had written lyrics until I just heard this! I thought the music was so beautiful on Richard's cd that I wrote my own to sing along!
This was also recorded, beautifully, by Canadian singer Veronique, when Richard produced her 1989 CD (now out of print). It's such a moving song. If only Karen had recorded it....
What a stunningly beautiful piece. Richard Carpenter is an amazing pianist, and Petula Clark could manage to extract emotion from a reading of the Paris telephone directory. Small wonder then that with material like this, written I assume by Richard, she takes our breath away.
Very accurate appraisal. Petula at around 70 years ago - looking after her voice very well. And connecting to a song. Richard and Petula working nicely together. I want more@!
Ssoko, my heart just melted as I listened & watched this clip! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Petula just gets more & more expressive with time. Richard's piano-playing beautiful as always! Are there more of 2 of them?

Wonderful song and vocals by Petula and piano by Richard, this is the first song I've heard Petula sing since "Downtown" many years ago.

The words sound like "love lives" in one brief kiss.

What are the words she sings between "What the future held, I'll never know" and "In one brief kiss" ?
