there is a very simple reason why anyone would want to use Windows it just works no coding no messing about with command line code no searching forums to get your games to run just install and go all the drivers are made for windows with very few exceptions.
But I do agree that Ubuntu is the Best freeware os going at the minute it hits the right spot for newbies and experienced user alike it comes loaded with every app your average home user needs full office suite video and photo editing
wine is made insanely easier with PlayOnLinux. I also have a Cedega subscription, and PlayOnLinux is on par with Cedega, a commercial product! gaming support on Linux has come a hell of a long way. It's not perfect, but it's just about good enough.
Any mention of the fact that 10.04 installs Grub on drives that you haven't installed Linux on? I tried fixmbr and fixboot and Grub still won't let me boot Windows XP.
@themacfan16 i had osx and i still do, the thing with it is, its just too simple and sometimes it gets boring. that's why i moved to linux, its more challenging in some ways...
@0987654321284 do you actually have it probably not im using one right now and im enjoying myself i only miss 1 thing from windows a good editing software. and mac is well know for editing videos i hear from so many freinds they would rather work hard on a pc then a mac cause it sucked.
@MrAwesomesauce101 what are you talking about? what do i not have? what you said is that mac is known for editing but you would rather do editing on a pc.
The only problem I had with this release is that the default disc burner doesn't like RW discs. It will erase them, but it won't recognise them after.
@Ov3rK1LL3000 Rockstar sucks for not making a Linux version of the game. It's hard to even properly install and configure GTA IV in Windows XP. They're shitty programmers.
@testament0221 There are various ways. There's Wine, PlayOnLinux (wine with a better frontend for games and some extra scripts), Crossover Games (like playonlinux but it's more professional and you have to pay for it) and Cedega (nothing to do with Wine ANYMORE, not opensource and you have to pay also) If your willing to pay go with Crossover Games, if not go with PlayOnLinux and Wine
@rogermsw mint is 10.04 with a theme and manager layover added on. I always laugh when ppl say that mint is better because if Ubuntu "sucks" - Mint still has all the upstream problems that you don't like about Ubuntu, so whatever you don't like it has in there.
Mint has literally no changes, besides some alternative software and codecs installed. Themes and stuff like that are different, but the mint menu is ugly and now most ppl agree that Ubuntu looks better than mint, so why switch to Mint?
I love Linux, but you guys give it a bad name... I talk to people about Linux and aways get the "it's for geeks" and god! you guys promote the geek handle totally. And why would you have all those Social account.... GET A LIVE open the door and walk out to the street and TALK TO SOMEONE.
As luck would have it, I installed Mint 8 a week prior to your Ubuntu 10.04 comments. So...I broke down today and installed it on my Asus 1000HA netbook. Wow, this is impressive. I agree, I think Linux has finally made it to the average user. My wireless printer of all things was detected and the drivers installed.
51:30 This is why rolling release distros rock. I've been on this same install for 5 years. It's almost impossible to break beyond repair. About the only thing that could cause that would be to corrupt the package manager database.
Of course rolling releases have their own issues with stability testing and such, but you also don't have to mess with backporting which makes it worth it. I'd never want to reinstall every 6 months.
Great show guys....btw best friggen Beer is Tastey EVER this week! Never laughed so much in an episode. People on the bus prolly thought I was slipping. Got ya both followed on twitter now so i might actually catch it Live!
Linux? and you question why Apple wants to streamline and stabilize their platfrom? lol, what you want is Monopolysoft domination clusterfuck landscape all over again on Apple's revolutionary iPhone OS platform, and Jobs will never go there. 60 codecs and an ocean of crashtastic garbage to bog down your mobile devices like MS Windows hell all over again.
I must address that Ubuntu 10.04 gives a black screen upon booting from Live CD for a lot of users. I searched online and found a solution but then the resolution was still messed up and didn't register my laptop's monitor. VERY disappointing. This is the stuff that turns new users away. Its the basic things I wish Ubuntu would just focus on and get right. It would help convert those those that are adventurous enough to move away form Mac or Windows.
Great Ubuntu review... though I've had my own issues with the new release. However, they are nothing your average user would be messing around with. I still only have Ubuntu on VM but I might give it a go.
About the MS patent issue... Doesn't their way of going about it amount to extortion or blackmail? The companies that use Linux and the Linux foundation should really do something about this. Take MS to court and make them say what these patents are and we'll change the code!
As much as I wanted to watch this and I know you guys know your stuff I just can't stomach it. Awful awful video quality and you guys act stupid more than you tell us anything. But thanks for letting us know that version is out so I can go look at it elsewhere.
