jim and pam are best friends, only jim has a major crush on her, and pam pretty much feels the same, despite being engaged. they're really secretly in love with each other, but their too scared to do anything about it. anytime they get too close, they immediately back off. "casino night" in season 2 is about the closest they ever got to "hooking up". the office isn't really about that stuff, it's more about the tension and awkwardness between characters.
