  • We went here when I was just 5 years old. Didn't go too often since we lived in Bridgeport and had Pleasure Beach so much closer. Amazing though how quickly they all disappeared. First Pleasure Beach, then Savin Rock. At least folks got good footage of Savin Rock. I checked our family movies and though we have a few seconds of my sister at Savin Rock before I was born, there's no footage of Pleasure Beach. I'm almost amazed no film of that park has emerged anywhere yet. Let's hope it does.

  • I visited this place in 1966. it was pretty dumpy with most of the fun stuff closed. I live in Los Angeles now and the Carousel is a Six Flags Magic Mountain about 40 miles away. Was a trip to find it one day.

  • At least "Jimmy`s" is still there...

  • i wish there wuz no tornado

  • Wow, the "Flying Horses." My father, Lynn Reynolds, worked for Peter Franck's Funhouse for years and was part of the crew that readied the horses every year. I hear they're out in California nowadays. Our birthright, sold out........

  • I FELT LIKE, "I DIED AND WENT TO HEAVEN," WHEN I DISCOVERED THE SAVIN ROCK VIDEOS. GOD BLESS THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM................ON WATCH THEM ON A REGULAR BASIS................

  • Wow does this bring back memories!!! Thank You for posting. I was sad when the tore it down.

  • WOW.......this really does bring back the great memories!!! COOL!!!

  • My family went to Savin Rock on Sunday's. We went with aunts and uncles and it was a whole day affair. I thought I could smell the cotton candy and the grease of the roller coaster that dad took me on because I was too young to go alone. Brings back so many fine memories. My thoughts now was watching the families, ladies in dresses and little kids dressed up. Great time!

  • Grew up in W. H. @ the top of Kelsey Ave. My mom use to leave us at the carousel & penny arcade while she did errands. I was so afraid of the laughing lady, fun house & laff in the dark. At night I could hear the people screaming on the roller coaster and the sounds of the stock car races from my bedroom window-happy sounds. I also miss jimmies as a hotdog stand. Wonderful childhood memories. I have visited the carousel at Magic Mountain. Glad it is there.

  • Im so glad that I got to be a part of this, even though I was very young, I remember so much!

  • At 2:30 of the video is a shot of PTC #21, that opened at the park in 1921. A beautiful carousel. It still turns today at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Southern California.

  • @koasterkav what happened to the plan to get the carousel back to west haven..I know it was a plan because I donated money to it.

  • My grandparents had their honeymoon here in 1922..I moved to West Haven in 1966, I remember the race track of course and the Mighty Mouse, a few small rides that still remained behind Jimmies..

  • I live in West Haven now. Why was the park taken down? I would love to live next to an amusement park!

  • Savin Rock amusement park was bulldozed as a result of a process called "redevelopment", popular in the 60's and 70's to get rid of undesirable areas.

The property was taken by eminent domain by a redevelopment commission whose news releases drove down property values.

The expression: "Sometimes you don't know what you have until it's gone" could apply here.

At least the Savin Rock area now has some nice public access space.

  • @cnote0187 i live here now to , they didnt take it down there wuz a tornado

  • @rinoman19 no that isn't true

  • Sure brings back memories! Sometimes we would walk to The Rock with just 25 cents in our pockets and stay all day in Peter Frank's Fun House! Those were the days my friend!

  • I remember the "Laughing Lady" which was part of the fun house. I was absolutely terrified of her. My Mom said I used to ask her "Where does the Laughing Lady go in the winter?" I was sure she was hiding under my bed.

  • thunder2658 - Grew up in the "Sea Bluff" area from 1944 to 1962. Had many friends who lived on "Bradley Point" while growing up. One of the kids father owned the "Barnacle", a high end restaurant, not a nightclub that was built above the sandbar that went out to the twin rocks. Spent alot of time at "Savin Rock", "White City" and the "Speedway". Saw the actual rock, excavated in 1951, (80%) and Jimmies built the current restaurant there. Brings back alot of memories. Moved to Florida-1968

  • Lived in West Haven in 1958 right down the street from this amusement park. When my mother was a young girl she fell off one of the rides and broke her arm. Absolutely amazing to see these pictures. Talk about this time with my own children. Can't wait to show them this video. My mother-in-law still lives on the same street in West Haven where I grew up. If you go to Bradley Point now you can still see the foundation of the night club that was once there!!!!!

  • My dad ook me to savin rock when I was a small child. I can remember riding some of the kiddie rides and watching him win a prize for my younger sister. It is just a shame that we don't have it still here.

  • Goodness, what memories this brings back .... Went there often in the late 50s (with parents) and early- and mid-60s with dates. Took a girl named Caroline K. there once, fell SO in love with her, but never really had a chance .... I still think of her after all these years. Thanks for posting this video. RB

  • Too bad its not like that there anymore...look how nice it was.. no crooked baseball hats, no baggy pants with the underwear showing.. just folks out for a fun time at the park! Ahh West Haven.. What happened to you?

  • @zacker001

I couldn't help but notice, not a single overweight person anywhere. Everybody was so thin. And a day at the Rock meant you dressed up. I have such indelible memories of Savin Rock from the early 60's. From the sights, the smells, the sounds, the twinkle of the lights after dark. As close to a magical place as there ever was.

  • I never had the chance to visit Savin Rock when they had the amusement park there... It's too bad they no longer have it...I would love to bring my grandchildren.

  • I could smell the popcorn, hotdogs and cotton candy while I was watching this vid. Thanks for posting it. I used to go to the Rock in the late 50s and early 60s just before they tore it down. Great stuff.
