I will agree with you that the industry is in areas like LA and being there is important but going to a big city that is incredibly expensive can be risky. Marino has openly admitted that the local crowd was highly influential on his success and initial recording contract. Other individuals like Chris Cornell have made similar statements in the past about achieving success where there is greater support for your idea. Particularly these days the record contract is not the end all be all.

They get swooped up by who ever is going on a 'solo" tour on the cheap. A great example is Chris Cornell, Rob Zombie, Scott Weiland and virtually every singer that wants to make money off their popularity without the expense of the original lineup. Derek Trucks is a better example of a modern guitar hero.

John 5 wasn't Marylin Manson's original guitar player. I have an old girlfriend who has footage of Manson prior to his signing with the labels. Tampa Bay metal awards. He used to do gigs back there when I was gigging the same clubs. Club Detroit, ACL club, etc. He used to carry lunch boxes on stage with the spooky kids... His act was musically terrible. If you want to see how crummy his band was I can show you the real deal.. Image can't hide the truth.... He always sold out his band.

Kasey Ross, from Deloris Telescope was offered the gig when he went up to New Orleans during antichrist superstar recording. He was a friend of mine. But on the other hand, his image has alot to do with his message, which has always been the strongest part of his music anyways. He was nvr really a musician, but more of an artist. You're right, John 5 wasn't his first guitarist -- it was Daisy Berkowitz. The music business is all about that; if you want to sell, you have to sell yourself first. It's all about marketing strategy.

That's all these artists are doing, dressing up so that first impressions catch the attention of the listener long enough for them to listen. e.g. Rapper have hot women in their videos because they are mainly catering for young men who will obviously pay attention long enough to listen.
