No end zone bullsh**, NO TALK, NO childish dance. Just pure 100% class. They don't make them like the great Earl Campbell anymore. The game of football misses Earl Campbell.
Bum Phillips ran Earl Campbell in the freaking dirt man, just like how George Halas derailed Gayle Sayers career, I guess those guys felt like they had "stallions" and you want to run your Thoroughbred, trouble is, they weren't horses they were freaking human, and those coached literally ran them out the game wayyyy too soon. Earl Campbell, to me is the greatest Running Back ever! He had it all, power, speed, cuts, killer instinct, etc...Sanders is a close 2nd, Faulk, Tony Dorsett
Campbell is probably the only running back I've ever seen that reminded me of Jim Brown. If he'd only had the durability. He had that rare combination of speed, power, and balance that Brown had; just got hurt too often.
@buckfan1969 I hear you dude and cant say I disagree. But remember a durable runner can even be abused. The oilers worked Campbell like a mule. 3rd and 16......what should we do coach? Uh.....handoff to Earl.
Uhhh its the 3rd quarter and weve only passed the ball 6 times the entire game coach. Uhhh handoff to Earl!
I knew Earl when I worked a UT and sometimes I would see him walk on campus and he would take his sweet time like he was on a leisure stroll. When I would see him on the field punishing tacklers, it was like seeing two different people that I knew.
God Blessed TEXAS with this amazing talent... both on and off the field. It is heartbreaking to see him now.... thanks for the memories Earl, TEXAS LOVES YOU!
i almost cried because i've idolizing him since i was 6 i am only 13 and i've always wanted to be in the nfl and when i think earl i think hope cuz he's just a kid from texas just like me and he works hard just like me so when i hear earl campbell i hear hope
@5191keith people kill me how they always talk shit about celebrations. that part of the Game is actually what took football to the next level in terms of notariety. I believe people who dislike endzone celebrations are sore losers. Like deon sanders said if you dont like it keep him out of the endzone
@smoothcollected well me being a former college football player. I cant really agree with you on that because even being down so many points your still in the game and every tackle and first down means something and your proving something to yourself. And mostly dudes you see celebrating while down are usually dudes who arent starters and happy to be in and are showng their coach hey i could do this and showing there worth keeping or playing
ONLY ALL OF THE STEEL CURTAIN WITH 9 IN THE BOX COULD STOP BIG EARL CAMPBELL! THIS IS WHY HE IS CRIPPLED TODAY! 1934 YARD IN 1980 AND HE STILL MISSED 3 GAMES! DO THE MATH PEOPLE! HE IS THE BEST EVER! GOD BLESS YOU EARL!
@turboplazz These are two men are refuse to put together in lists of who is better. They were both gentlemen, great ambassadors of the game, and played it for the love of it. They are among the very best ever to play it.
@kglove01 -- AMEN! Unfortunately though, today's athletes, particularly the ones of the NFL, wouldn't consider conversing with Mr. Campbell. They would deem him...a relic, his views would be obsolete in their materialistic sphere.
@000MrAnderson The short answer is greed. Mike Ditka really pushed for the PLA to give out more benefits for the players that were really disabled. Ditka mentioned that there was plenty of money in trust (several hundred million) and he openly wondered why none of this money was being distributed.
Dear Earl, please contact me. I am a relative, I knew your youngest sister when she lived in Arizona w/husband.Contact me at my school 480 9875360 ask for PH.
As a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan, I grew up watching Earl. I could never cheer for him, but his name alone sent shivers up your spine. You KNEW he was gonna be a problem. Most dominating RB I've ever seen. I'd take him over anybody I ever saw.
His style of running didn't necessarily lead to his ailments today, some of that was genetic-guys like Csonka who were just as physical don't have those problems.
he would have been the greatest no matter what time period he played in....he is just as athletic than anybody today...i meawn look at the guy hes huge and the most important thing is hes a good guy...and had god givin skill....
I never said that Csonka was not a physical back. The point i was making that he was no Earl Campbell period. He may have had the physical part down but not the speed or elusiveness.
Bo is the only other RB on that level that i've seen in decades of watching. I stopped by the Downtown Athletic Club one day during lunchhour just before 9/11 just to see some of the pics of previous winners and drink in the history of that place. It's now been moved, most of the old ambience is gone.
I think he has to be my favorite, even over Barry and Jim. He had the best mixture of elusiveness, brute power and speed. All three are in the same category of greatness, but I happened to like Earl's style.

Man is he ever beat up now - TOny Dorsett is older than he is and he looks about 10 years younger than Earl. Houston Oilers used him upand threw him away without as much as a Super Bowl appearance. How do yo not make it with a running back like that? Bum and Wade Phillips are overrated sorry ass hick coaches.
Was or has there ever been such a classier man let alone great football player like Earl? The answer is simply no. Earl is the man. You will never be forgotten.
THank you Earl Campbell for your hard play and greta human spirit, my mom yelling "Go Earl" rings in my ears she dead now but she loved you more than life.
If they had a trophy for being a great human being Earl should get one of those too. In a day of over paid and mega ego NFL players we could sure use another Earl Campbell to remind us what a great athlete and good a good person is all about. Bud Adams turned his back on Earl just like he did the people of Houston.
@belowaveragejoe2 Isn't a shame his career was cut so short? His career was like an exploding bottle rocket, while so many other running backs become black cat sparklers.
