My problem is that sometimes with death metal these days there seems to be very little connecting different musical ideas together (as it draws from worthless hardcore genres), and instead seems very piecemeal--like a sampler platter of awesome guitar riffs. With that said, can someone kindly define these genres for me and explain what distinguishes them from each other? And what are some good, legitimate band examples for each?

Well I can't really explain them very well but I can give you a couple of examples, you'll be able to pick it up from there.

For Death Metal try: Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Cryptopsy's albums None So Vile and Blasphemy Made Flesh.

Deathcore: New Cryptopsy(album Unspoken King), Suicide Silence, White Chapel? I'm not too sure on all of those.

Metalcore: Well perhaps The Devil Wears Prada... maybe that's all I can think of.

I'd stick to Death Metal though, it's best imo
