Your going to find that someone isn't going to be happy about what you do or how you do it. In my opinion anytime you fall a tree and it lands where you want it, you walk away from the fall with a saw that runs you did good!
@walterbrunswick to be honest with you i do not go through my comments. but some of them are outta hand. but i dont have time to go through 300+ comments
nice job bro... way to put yourself out there... you know there's gonna be plenty of armchair-generals on here giving you flack. Just glad to see you got the balls to get and there and do it. Props for technique also. What one person considers "safe" might actually create a hazardous or accident for you... Looks like you know how to carry yourself and your saw.
I liked the vid wedgeg are a shure thing on my job sites I posted a vid on a tree job I did yesterday. I love having wedges don't do much logging last time I did it was a few years back in washington state. I do mostly do commerchal tree work now for like the city or for my busness. Forestry lic should be easy to get got mine 5 years ago my companie name is. ALAME LOGGING,TREE SERVICE, AND FORESTRY CONSERVATION, I get ok busness. Sounds like you doing good reading your comments. Just be safe.
I agree with above, I have been cutting for over 15 years in all weather and terrain, dont put the saw on the ground behind you, if you ned to retreat you may trip on it. As the tree starts to go stand 90 degrees to the fall and well back so a slipping or back shearing trunk wont get you, my safety glasses are always on under my sthil chainsaw hardhat with brush shield, they saved my eyes once, consider the chaps if your putting your left leg out like that and be careful! Be safe, have fun!
@blydakid yea ive been out loggin full time now fer about half year fucken love it sooo much. i have been gettin more and more techneques the more im out in the woods. my boss cant believe how far ive come considering im a first gen logger. but in this video i think i was 15 or so im 19 now so a lot has changed :)
I'm not a professional, but you downed the tree exactly where you wanted it and in very little time = job well done! The technique seems to work great! Just wish I could see it from a camera angle where we could see how the cut was made on the fell side of the tree. Not sure about the negative comments some people made, but knowing how some are on youtube it's probably people being arrogant and ignorant. Anyways, what is you take on your own video? Do you recommend Stihl saws over others?
nice video there ,saw was pulling you about a bit there man ,aye nice fall u done there ,chainsaw gloves do get in the way a bit especially when wet but i try and wear all the h/s gear ,u never know ,reminds me ive got to get another wedge
To improve your safety and technique go by your local Stil dealer and buy their video DVD for around $7.00. It has a lot of good information you might find helpful.
@ReadySquirrel the problem with some of the safety stuff is that it gets in the way. like chaps for instance right now with the knee high snow where i am i keep gettin tangled up in brush due to the chaps. but ive been eyein them kevalar pants.
not too good at all, the folks posting above are clueless. Honestly if you want some advice here it is. Try finding the sights on your saw and how to use them. It looks like that tree went left of where you pointed. lets be honest now. Pine trees are symmetrical and you should be able to crush beer cans w/ em when you fall em. right now you are just a guy w/ a saw, cutting down trees. its like lighting a can of gas on fire anyone can do that. get a book and read it .
Nice fell, looking how the tree fell you had a nice directional birds mouth cut.
good to see you have H&S gear on, wasnt to inpressed with the chainbreak off when performing a drop start before you made your fell, but you used the chainbreak afterwards that was good!!
Just a lil tip ive got as ms 441 like yours with a 25" bar, its a great saw but i found more balance on the saw with a 20" bar for felling trees with a diameter such as the tree you felled..try out a 20" ans see what you think. =)
@ASTC066 i mostly use a 20" bar now that im in the woods day in day out. i like em little 20's but on the landin i use either a 24 or 32" bar dependin.
@Fueldaddy76 ive got some bigger saws now and im bigger and more intellegent than i was in this video. i think i was about 16 or so now im 19 and i have a lot better experience and have witnessed what to do and what not to do.
I am going to buy a high-end chainsaw from either stihl or husqvarna now. I have a husquvarna 235 and I am very eager to power up, but still satisfied with the durability and quality of the saw.
Could anybody give me a hint as to what to buy? I'm thinking mid-level power, being able to handle at least a 20 inch sawbar.
HAHA you had to wedge that matchstick? Jesus christ. If it took me that long to fall a pecker pole like that on flat ground I'd have been fired years ago.
@bunjit1 Don't laugh at the matchstick arms...big things come in small packages. I run a ms660 all day with no problems...If you don't believe me, check out the cutting video I posted. I'm 140 lbs soaking wet, and it doesn't slow me down. Anyhow, the only advice I can give is to sharpen that @%$#%@% saw....you should see big chunks, not dust coming out of it. Pines aren't particularly dangerous, but cutting with a dull saw is dangerous. I cut a lot of chestnut oak and ash, dull means dead.

Ummm yeah... I think you should wear a lifejacket in the bathtub and cut your meat with a pair of scissors too. What up with all the gay safety crap anyway?
It's best to use a SLEDGE for you WEDGE. if you get into trouble and need some extra torque, the head of an ax won't give it to you. Other than that nice job, but knock off the standing around and thinking about it, LOL
Good job. You know what you're doing. You use wedges, and you don't splinter-pull the living hell out of the stump.
A couple pointers though... It looks like your thumb is on top of the handle. Put it underneath. If that saw kicks, it's going to get ripped right out of your hands. And when the tree starts going over, get out of there. When it hits the ground, the butt might kick up and come towards you. Also, if there are any large dead limbs, they might break off once the tree starts moving.
@MrStihlms260 i am wearing jonsreds in this video i had a pair of stihl but they got a little small on me. now i got leabanon chaps or something like that.
drop starting the saw, no chain brake when moving around, no more than 2' from the tree when it drops... not impressive. Sure you've got an expensive saw, but your safety skills are really lacking. Make a video where you use a great saw and are smart with it.
@lazlow69 for starters its a stihl they are great saw's and he was using a wedge so it wasn't going to come back and hit him he know's what he is doing
even though you probably know way more about cutting trees than me, one thing my buddies figured out is, dont stand there and watch it fall, walk back a little bit and watch it from there. my buddy got hit with a widowmaker, lucky his hardhat was on or he woulda been hurt alot more.
awesome cutting and awesome placement but i have to agree with hawktana about your wedge work and you standing back while the tree is falling ive been falling for 30 yrs and i still do it to this day i like my old school ways and not into equipment like harvesters and such your life is more important then the tree awesome job though and be safe
Dude, you need to look up now & then when pounding your wedge, in case something comes loose up above. Then you need to stand back away from the butt of the tree when it's falling. It case it kicks back.
everyones an expert logger on youtube lol. this fuckin drop was fine. alll the clowns that say "here are some better tips..." shut the fuck up. heres a tip for you guys........ stop watching training videos on youtube then flamming other peoples vids and telling them what to do like you fuckin know whats up because your stupid ass just watched a video and you cut your dads firewood on saturdays. with the time it takes you clowns to drop trees your asses would have been fired on the job site!
@nikesb2406 I COULD NOT AGREE WITH YOU MORE, THIS KID IS 17 YO AND SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON. OK, MAYBE HE SHOULD HAVE WALKED AWAY FROM THE TREE... WHATEVER GET OFF HIS BACK... WTF... LIKE NIKE SAYS EVERYONE IS A LOGGER ON YOUTUBE... OR A RACE CAR DRIVER, OR WHAT THE FUCK EVER... STUPID... I CANT READ THIS SHIT ANYMORE.. ANYWAY COOL VID. AND GOOD JOB, I DONT THINK I COULD HAVE DONE THAT WELL. RON IN MAINE
it went where you wanted it to go good thing there was no wind. if the tree goes the wrong way have the saw with you when you start to run . it is cheaper than buying new saw every time you drop a tree on one . good luck next time
alright dude you did pretty good. dont listen to other assholes that are putting you down. you put the tree right where you wanted it, and didnt get hurt. Looks like you know what your doing.
put it this way,if he did this on a test for tree felling, he would not pass, . he would fail big time , and if he keeps fells trees in this way he will kill him self . go and get some training .
Also, nevermind these candy asses who tell you to back away from the tree while it's falling. What I do is this:
After I cut all the way through my holding wood, just as the tree starts to kind of wobble around on the stump like granddad after a few too many Egg Noggs on Thanksgiving eve: unsure of where to lay his spinning head, I take a running start and jump onto that tree trunk like a bucking bronco!
First order of safety is to make sure the chain can't spin so it can't cut you. Here's what I do: Lay the saw on the ground. Put the chain brake on. Grab the throttle with your left hand so you have control and give it full throttle while you pull on the rip cord with your right hand. Before starting, place your right knee on the bar and chain so that the chain is resting on your shin bone and cannot spin and possibly kick back and cut you about the head, neck, face, arms or breast area.
walyll0 bore cutting is safer not to mention you split less of the heart wood cause by the time the tree is falling the heart wood has been cut. Also less of a chance of barbercharing.
cyoung927, taking a knee may be more comfortable but it is not a safe thing to do. If in the event the tree starts to barber chair or a limb falls from above you would not have the mobility to step out of the way. establish an excape route and be able to move there in a hurry if necessary.
hey are you still cutting trees? if you are here are a couple tips.
1. take a knee when you are cutting this will be easier on your back.
2. when you are using the felling wedges just snug them up with your hand by lightly hitting it. and then progress your cut a little then snug the wedge a little more with a smack from your ax and then finish out your backcut and then drive it home if the tree really needs to be wedged.
you asked for advise....i cut timber full time...well you did petty dang good. if you would like another way of timber felling check out (bore cutting) my current employer requires this style(suppose to be safer)
Ey man you gota use your gunning cut before your sloping on ya face cut. Gun your sights to where you want it ta drop, slope it, then do the back cut. Also start the cut at waist height. Practice makes perfect. The tree didnt fall on ya so thats a good right...
Yeah no wedge needed..and savage7mmmag pretty much said it for all of us your just a rookie but its cool no big deal it just takes time to get experience keep on loggin!!
Stihlo441 is right you didn't even need the wedge but I will say when your felling trees always watch the top for dead branches and two more things when the tree does start to fall NEVER stand right next to it it could barber chair or take a bad roll to one side and its goodnight all, and second don't leave your saw running and lay it on the ground like that
You shouldnt have even needed a wedge!,...the tree was small enough to not even need a wedge...make the directional cut then follow through on you last cut,..thats all.
When you are making the felling cut, let your saw fall the tree. The wedge should only be used for a backup to keep the tree from pinching your bar. Keep cutting until the tree starts to fall, then get out!
Never work in the woods or on a tree alone. If you get hurt who is going to help you. There are more aggresive chains on the market but if you do not have alot of experience with a saw a more aggresive chain will get you hurt faster. Use you head and think about all the possible things that could go wronge and never stand right next to the stump after the tree begins to fall. If that tree takes a bad hop you could find yourself with 3000 pounds of tree butt in your face or stomach.
learn how to look up and watch for dead branches that could possibly be comming down fromt he vibrations int he tree watched a guy get hurt pretty bad from doing that
I think way too much saw for you you only will put or self in danger with a saw that heavy for you it was already throwing you around wait intell you cut 3 or 4 more trees and your arms are wooped you have to fit the saw with the guy. But other than that it was agood cut.
You've got all the right safety equipment which is good, and your approach to cutting the tree is pretty good. The only advice I would offer is to make sure you cut your wedge about 1/3 of the way through the tree. And when you cutting the bottom part of the wedge, go to the other side of the tree and use the bottom of the bar, it will cut faster and easier. But other than that good job!
men you must understand that it doesn't always depend on the chainsaw if it is powerful, fast or other but it also depends on us to know how to use iit.
Your going to find that someone isn't going to be happy about what you do or how you do it. In my opinion anytime you fall a tree and it lands where you want it, you walk away from the fall with a saw that runs you did good!

don't stand so close to a falling tree base though. It could slide down the stump and spring at you.
tighten your belt a bit more so your pants are were they are supposed to be so you can run if you need to, without tripping over your trousers.
eat more protein meals so you don't snap those matchstick arms off ( just joking - they are a work in progress and will someday be mighty) :)

Sweet saw dude. Just picked up a MS290 with a 20" bar myself. Love it.
nman2008 1 year ago
TheDewManchoo 1 year ago
were you alone? you should have someone placing the wedges and tapping as you cut. good job.
steveturnerx 1 year ago
Not trying to be a jerk, but things you should be doing:
- Wear gloves
- At least have the brake on when starting the saw (I drop start too).
- Use your gunning lines. Way better than wedging the tree over.
- Get the hell away when it's starting to go over. They DO kick over.
- Never leave a saw running on the ground with the brake off.
- Your thumb goes around the bar. With it over the bar like you do, the brake might not engage if the saw kicks back.

drop starting the saw, no chain brake when moving around, no more than 2' from the tree when it drops... not impressive. Sure you've got an expensive saw, but your safety skills are really lacking. Make a video where you use a great saw and are smart with it.

Dude, you need to look up now & then when pounding your wedge, in case something comes loose up above. Then you need to stand back away from the butt of the tree when it's falling. It case it kicks back.

it went where you wanted it to go good thing there was no wind. if the tree goes the wrong way have the saw with you when you start to run . it is cheaper than buying new saw every time you drop a tree on one . good luck next time

kinghowie8 2 years ago
Also, nevermind these candy asses who tell you to back away from the tree while it's falling. What I do is this:
After I cut all the way through my holding wood, just as the tree starts to kind of wobble around on the stump like granddad after a few too many Egg Noggs on Thanksgiving eve: unsure of where to lay his spinning head, I take a running start and jump onto that tree trunk like a bucking bronco!
greazychicken 2 years ago
First order of safety is to make sure the chain can't spin so it can't cut you. Here's what I do: Lay the saw on the ground. Put the chain brake on. Grab the throttle with your left hand so you have control and give it full throttle while you pull on the rip cord with your right hand. Before starting, place your right knee on the bar and chain so that the chain is resting on your shin bone and cannot spin and possibly kick back and cut you about the head, neck, face, arms or breast area.

People twice as big as me are complaining about the weight of the MS441. I am 5'10 160lbs and can use this chainsaw all day.

walyll0 bore cutting is safer not to mention you split less of the heart wood cause by the time the tree is falling the heart wood has been cut. Also less of a chance of barbercharing.
bivfd219 2 years ago
cyoung927, taking a knee may be more comfortable but it is not a safe thing to do. If in the event the tree starts to barber chair or a limb falls from above you would not have the mobility to step out of the way. establish an excape route and be able to move there in a hurry if necessary.
benthetreeguy 2 years ago 2
try those tips and see if that helps out any.
cyoung927 2 years ago
hey are you still cutting trees? if you are here are a couple tips.
1. take a knee when you are cutting this will be easier on your back.
2. when you are using the felling wedges just snug them up with your hand by lightly hitting it. and then progress your cut a little then snug the wedge a little more with a smack from your ax and then finish out your backcut and then drive it home if the tree really needs to be wedged.
cyoung927 2 years ago

you asked for advise....i cut timber full time...well you did petty dang good. if you would like another way of timber felling check out (bore cutting) my current employer requires this style(suppose to be safer)
walyll0 2 years ago
Ey man you gota use your gunning cut before your sloping on ya face cut. Gun your sights to where you want it ta drop, slope it, then do the back cut. Also start the cut at waist height. Practice makes perfect. The tree didnt fall on ya so thats a good right...

Yeah no wedge needed..and savage7mmmag pretty much said it for all of us your just a rookie but its cool no big deal it just takes time to get experience keep on loggin!!
039Stihl 2 years ago
Stihlo441 is right you didn't even need the wedge but I will say when your felling trees always watch the top for dead branches and two more things when the tree does start to fall NEVER stand right next to it it could barber chair or take a bad roll to one side and its goodnight all, and second don't leave your saw running and lay it on the ground like that
savage7mmmag 2 years ago 4
Thank you mister Savage7mmmag...!
Stihlo441 2 years ago

savage7mmmag 2 years ago
You shouldnt have even needed a wedge!,...the tree was small enough to not even need a wedge...make the directional cut then follow through on you last cut,..thats all.

size of tree and the use of a wedge are not directly linked. its more to do with lean of the tree.

rangerkid777 2 years ago
nice cutting
boomhowerd2008 2 years ago
When you are making the felling cut, let your saw fall the tree. The wedge should only be used for a backup to keep the tree from pinching your bar. Keep cutting until the tree starts to fall, then get out!

LEARN HOW TO USE YOUR SAW! there is no second try on cutting a wedge two cuts should spit the wedge out on its own
Lettenemgo 2 years ago 2
Never work in the woods or on a tree alone. If you get hurt who is going to help you. There are more aggresive chains on the market but if you do not have alot of experience with a saw a more aggresive chain will get you hurt faster. Use you head and think about all the possible things that could go wronge and never stand right next to the stump after the tree begins to fall. If that tree takes a bad hop you could find yourself with 3000 pounds of tree butt in your face or stomach.
slipstink 2 years ago
learn how to look up and watch for dead branches that could possibly be comming down fromt he vibrations int he tree watched a guy get hurt pretty bad from doing that
connthechron 2 years ago

But other than that good job!
stumpjumper30 2 years ago 2
men you must understand that it doesn't always depend on the chainsaw if it is powerful, fast or other but it also depends on us to know how to use iit.
