  • How do you get an object on front or somewhere else on focus, while the lights are out of it and the effect works?

The effect for me works only when everything is out of focus.

  • Hi , in your video, you said that we need to set up the aperture as big as possible which turn the Fxx as small as possible, is that right? Sorry, I am a learner. Thank your for it....Nice Video

  • awesome

  • hey! im kind of having a hard time doing this, cause every time i try this, the shape i cut out just makes it look like a frame, and doesn't have the cool bokeh effect like it's supposed to have :| any advice?

  • I knew it was a good idea to save this in my favorites, now it's Christmas, let's have some fun !

    Thanks ! ;)

  • I do not have a camera with a removable SLR lens. I have been able to create hexagon bokeh effects using aperture priority mode (I do not know why it was hexagonal, my camera automatically makes light points hexagonal). Do you think that with my camera (a Canon powershot SX 130 IS) or any non-SLR camera, the shaped bokeh effect is possible?

  • wow i never knew this was possible thank you so much,

now i can make an anamorphic blur (you know, the directional blur, where everything thats blurry with an anamorphic lens goes to an ovel shape :)

  • I cant wait to try this!! I am new and just bought a Canon Rebel T3 that came with a 18-55mm kit lens.

  • thank you SO much for explaining the settings for the camera as well. So many other videos only explain how to make the actual filter.

  • Do you think dry erase marker on a UV filter would work?

  • i definitely will do this if i got a dslr camera. more photography effect please!

  • I have a question wont you get a lot of image noise if you use a cheap lens. would a prime lens do a better job in most cases and can I get shaped bokeh in film while filming and what type of lens would I need for that?

  • Thank you so much. The is a brilliant idea.

  • awesome def gonna try, thanks for the tip!

  • it' s genial! thank' s!!!

  • I also dont get how you get both the shaped light and the full image together? The result of this "trick" is a full image but because of the focus only the light that is far away comes in a shape?

  • i dont get it?? if your taking a picture through a small cut out hole how do you get a normal sized picture and not a picture of the paper with the hole?? pleease help!

  • @OMGcrystalOMG Same reason you get a normal rectangular picture through the circular lens

  • Comment removed

  • would this work with an slr, what settings would you advise ?

  • 0:30 -- Really?

Measuring the diameter of the lens?

    Are you kidding?

  • best like from me

    thanks a lot

  • i am new to photography and such.. but i understand most concepts and i want to give bokeh photography a try . if i have a Nikon d3100 and 18-55mm kit lens , do you think this will work for it as well ?

  • @xoiheartyou Yes, it probably will. Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

  • @makemagazine it works ! its not the best like other ones, but hey, i`m new ! i also tried to with white paper , worked as well but not so good .

  • @xoiheartyou Glad to hear it!

  • @xoiheartyou get as close as possible with the longest focal length and lowest aperture thats how you get the smallest dof :) enjoy

  • @xoiheartyou Largest aperture/ lowest f-stop sorry.

  • This was actually pretty cool...

  • Jimmy Wong made a music vid using this effect: /watch?v=jQCDZsEdvX4

  • bouquet

  • a good project after a long time.

  • Time to cut out some ufo shapes. Probably how some of the ufo hoaxes are made.

  • weed leaves everywere

  • this is awesome! im gonna try this tomorrow!

  • That's a great trick. I guess that's how they filmed the bus ride in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

  • I just made a penis cutout and took some pictures of girls at a party......they have NO IDEA. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Where's Kip? :(

  • WOW!!! Thank you a lot! I would never do it before watching this video o/

  • awesome!!!

  • HOHOHO!!! now im a genius!

  • that's awesome, thanks :)

  • Cool, but where is Domino !?

  • @18teenandup What? you mean the cat!

  • That was great!

  • Thats cool! :D

  • what I just don't get: How can there be a full picture? The paper is covering almost the whole lens? I don't get this :X

  • @Schaaf ok so, all light waves still enter through this small hole. But yes, you are correct, they enter in a small area the size of the cutout. When these light rays hit the lens however, they spread back apart to form a full image. This is my understanding at least (there may be some more hardcore photo people who can get a little more specific)

  • @cks1001 sounds kind of good :D thanks!

  • i like it. but sadly i dont have an slr :(

  • Tried this out this past Christmas to take some photos of my daughter with snowflake-shaped bokeh, worked quite well (although she had a cold so was not in the best of moods). I've added one of the shots to the Make pool. Nice easy to follow tutorial, and I encourage others to give this a go.

  • Wow! This is awesome!

  • Now, how do I do it with a Sony Cybershot? It doesn't have any settings to change exposure time.

  • @nandee1fuery You MIGHT be able to get it to work with a point and shoot. Try making the hole very small and set your camera to portraiture or macro mode so that the focus is shallow. Also have your camera focus on something close to the lens with the points of light far off in the background. Your camera will make the exposure time compensation automatically. Let us know if you get it to work! -Matt

  • @nandee1fuery try using a night or fireworks mode if you don't have any manual settings. press the shutter down half way to focus it and make sure it focuses on something very close to the camera. then move the close object away and take the shot.

  • @nandee1fuery Try Fireworks mode- most point-and-shoots have it, and it gives you a 2 second exposure.

  • @TheRhiannonRees My camera doesn't have a "fireworks" mode. I'm looking into upgrading.

  • Omg why didn't I know about this when I was actually in a photo class lol

  • Some old trick that is easy to do... sadly not all lens achieve it nicely ... Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II is the cheapest one I know of...

If your front lens element is near the filter thread, you can use a UV filter to hold the paper :]

    Another quick and old trick:

Flash light diffuser = white paper bag :D

  • @ogatobranco old M42/PK 50mm primes are even cheaper still! :)

  • You can set your compass to the diameter of your lens if you want, but I'll use the radius....so it actually fits the lens. ;-)

  • @jawayetti Yep. It's exactly the reason why I say to set the compass to draw circles the same size as the lens and show that the lens has a diameter of 50mm and the compass is set to 25mm wide. - Matt

  • @makemagazine It's pretty obvious what you meant and, as you said, you explained it and visually demonstrated it. I was just poking a little fun.

  • @makemagazine

    Haha! +1 for Matt

  • Brilliant!!!

  • just a remark: that paper needs to be as close to the front element of the lens as possible, otherwise it won't work. I tried it on Nikon 50mm f1.4G, which has that front glass set fairly deep in the lens body and when I put the paper just in front of the lens (let's say around where the filter threads are) it didn't work.

  • That's actually pretty awesome...

  • hey 50mm canon lens is amazing for bokeh on a budget!

  • Is that a T3i?

  • @TheWaddleWaddle canon t3i is a dslr made by canon

  • Wow this is a pretty cool project.. One that you can easily do, not like kipkay's projects.. Those are just cool to watch..

  • cool

  • The Bokehnator!

  • you could make a Bokeh burger ;)

  • omg! so nice thank you ;)

  • Great

  • But is it Bokehlicious?

  • This man is incredibly over animated. Neat effects with the camera.

  • Wow. I usually don't like this guy, but that was cool, but I wish they would give an explanation.

  • @mtdeezy Wikipedia has a very detailed explanation of Bokeh.

  • that was actually really cool

  • nice =)

  • What would happen if you used a different color paper?

  • @JadeCookProductions It's black because you can't let any other light come through except the shape. If the paper allows too much light to shine through the effect will fade.

  • 0:55, thats what she said!

  • That was a lot cooler than I thought it would be

  • BOKEHMON!

  • @khompressor

    BIKACHU

  • wow

  • that's pretty fuckin' cool!

  • Awesome! Thanks, great idea.

  • it's awesome, man!!!!

  • if you like this you should really check out Lensbaby they did this effect first

  • @Jaumur Sorry, but Bokeh has been around for a very long time, "Lensbaby" didn't do it first...

  • sexy, loved it !!!

  • I must admit, that's quite awesome.

  • Probably the most interesting video I've seen from "this" guy.

  • @VariablePenguin I would agree.

  • I am so doing this!

  • very well done. I look forward to trying this!

  • nice one

  • That was pretty cool i must say! Thank you!

  • old news is old

  • COOL TUTORIAL :)
