I once got a food stamps card as payment for tutoring; when I went to use it I noticed it had a $270+ balance, I thought the guy had made a mistake and called him, but he told me it's fine because the card expires in a few days and he has $500 more. I really got to pig out, but it was all healthy foods; I'm a naturalist.
In my state, you don't even need to show up to the welfare office. It's insane. You just apply online, and they mail you the SNAP card. It appears that they WANT people to be dependent!

to get welfare you have to have a job or be enrolled in a workforce one type program and show proof you are looking for work. They pay taxes, SSI, disability, unemployment all of it they pay in to the same pools that you do. Before getting on welfare they had jobs and paid taxes too so its not other peoples money they are spending its their own portion they paid into and are entitled to.

not everone has a kitchen or stove or microwave and are not allowed to cook in their rentals.all apartments dont allow cooking especially if housing pays the rent. they just throw you in a run down hell hole. maybe if people protested for the right to buy hot cooked foods from supermarket steaming food tables, hot deli foods

I could understand a large amount of candy being unjust, but i myself had to resort to ebtt in time in my life and not knowing how to cook nor having cooking equipment left me resorting to food that last longer and won't spoil milk isn't really as essential as water which would last longer and i would easily choose a pack of chips over something that would go to waste more fragily. I will admit. I'm 20, my daughter will be 2 in February. I have a job. I do not work full time as I am also in school. So I do need the help of welfare to keep us fed as most of my money goes into keeping a decent roof over our heads and keeping my daughter with the necessities she needs as a young child. I fill up our fridge, freezer and cupboards. Then yes, I do go get her a treat if she wants, snacks if she wants for here and there. I see no problem as long as we have enough real keep us fed.

I use to get EBT. And it shocked me that I could get crap ( Candy Bars) Yet couldn't get a Rotisserie Chicken to help make my dinner a quick fix. Now occasionally yes when on a grocery run I would get like the bags of chips for my son's lunch or soda for when I was sick. But at least 98% of my run was good foods...fruit veggies meats etc. But I'm with you on the paying for junk is stupid. Considering food stamps have a monthly limit, you can't really chastise a person who chooses to maximize their amount by buying junk food, it's cheaper. Additionally, most of those on food stamps live in areas where healthy food is out of reach. At the end of the day, it's their choice; they're only hurting themselves.
When I was a cashier at WinnDixie in H.S., you could not use FOOD STAMPS to buy prepared food. The FOOD STAMPS also had to be attached to the booklest AND I, as a cashier, had to rip them out.
I've long since left the grocery business. I had not idea that the system was being abused. I'm sure that the abusers don't appreciate that I pay approx 22,000 a year in taxes.

If we took all the workers out of gas stations and only had self serve pumps then you could never get your soda or candy in a convenient matter, you would have to go in to a store and walk from one end to the other and most likely buy more things that you don't need. When an elderly woman or man that cant pump there own gas comes to the store they wont be able to pump there gas.

I could understand a large amount of candy being unjust, but i myself had to resort to ebtt in time in my life and not knowing how to cook nor having cooking equipment left me resorting to food that last longer and won't spoil milk isn't really as essential as water which would last longer and i would easily choose a pack of chips over something that would go to waste more fragily. Your opinion makes sense to a point but you never know the conditions behind a persons purchase.

I will admit. I'm 20, my daughter will be 2 in February. I have a job. I do not work full time as I am also in school. So I do need the help of welfare to keep us fed as most of my money goes into keeping a decent roof over our heads and keeping my daughter with the necessities she needs as a young child. I fill up our fridge, freezer and cupboards. Then yes, I do go get her a treat if she wants, snacks if she wants for here and there. I see no problem as long as we have enough real keep us fed.

I use to get EBT. And it shocked me that I could get crap ( Candy Bars) Yet couldn't get a Rotisserie Chicken to help make my dinner a quick fix. Now occasionally yes when on a grocery run I would get like the bags of chips for my son's lunch or soda for when I was sick. But at least 98% of my run was good foods...fruit veggies meats etc. But I'm with you on the paying for junk is stupid. There needs to be a limit on how much is given to them.That way it would be more likely they would spend it on essentials. Also, the person using it needs to be I.D'd! Considering food stamps have a monthly limit, you can't really chastise a person who chooses to maximize their amount by buying junk food, it's cheaper. Additionally, most of those on food stamps live in areas where healthy food is out of reach. At the end of the day, it's their choice; they're only hurting themselves.

When I was a cashier at WinnDixie in H.S., you could not use FOOD STAMPS to buy prepared food. The FOOD STAMPS also had to be attached to the booklest AND I, as a cashier, had to rip them out.
I've long since left the grocery business. I had not idea that the system was being abused. I'm sure that the abusers don't appreciate that I pay approx 22,000 a year in taxes.

If we took all the workers out of gas stations and only had self serve pumps then you could never get your soda or candy in a convenient matter, you would have to go in to a store and walk from one end to the other and most likely buy more things that you don't need. When an elderly woman or man that cant pump there own gas comes to the store they wont be able to pump there gas.

@JeffJefferyJeff I don't think the argument here is about whether or not there is a need for gas station attendants in this country. It's about people that are less fortunate than others receiving government assistance and you believing that you have the right to tell them what they should or should not be able to buy. I volunteer to help people less fortunate than myself and I don't place myself above them at all, they are human beings that have been dealt a bad hand in life, not animals.

@HomicidalEntity Apologize to Jeff please...... why you a hater ? I've worked with people that say don't give me anymore hours of work or I'll get my food stamps cut. "Oh dude why not work a few more hours and pay for your own dang food" it's a thought! Yes we all have a right to say what we think that the needy need they certainly do not know how to supply what their family's need if they are on assistance of any kind. Thank you for volunteering so I really do not think you are a hater.

@2u4ria My point is that, there are good people out there that need extra assistance but cannot find "extra hours" in this bad economy. I will not apologize to this guy because, I don't think it's right to target an entire group of people for something that only 'some' people do and say that they need to be treated like children and told what they can and cannot buy. Also, I don't think it's right for you to assume that work is just out there and up for grabs in every area of this country.

@HomicidalEntity Oh I know the need and lack of jobs. Times are tough, Cut my cable so I could eat. What did miss or mr candy bars cut out to buy food? Oh and also know "there are" jobs out there. Look you will see them. and If you keep voting the" tax and spend" people in we'll "all" be on food stamps it makes them feel better to provide for us. Broken system needs an accountant think about that the next time you go vote. "OK" Oh We have every right to tell them to buy quality foods! TY

@2u4ria I kind of figured you were a broke republican, it's those kind of ignorant people that keep this country down. You vote for a party that thinks tax breaks for the rich and funding cuts for any program intended for helping people in poverty is a good thing. I'm glad you cut your cable, now you can't watch that bullshit that fox news tries to force down our throats every single day. Hopefully those "candy bar people" aren't as misinformed as you are.
