The obvious problem with Russia invading the US is pretty obvious. In the event the US believed it couldn't win against the invasion forces they'd simply launch a full scale nuclear assault on Russia, forcing the Russians to respond in kind. The Russians know this an would never actually invade because it'd just leave both countries as a pile of rubble. In the game though, it's implied the Russian nukes have issues, meaning America could level the country without major retaliation.
I hope U.S. History is repeated throughout an incident such as this. I do hope it isn't the case of the Roman Empire, it seems to be getting that way in my opinion. The Senate is full of corruption, citizens are growing more paranoid of their enemy and the outside world is starting to hate the U.S. more.

Countries can and have been able to become major world-wide threats in the past within a time span of just a few years.
