I have the Presonus hooked up to a powere amp. I would like to hook up my ipod to the Firestudio so I can listen to the music Im playing with my drums through my load speakers and I would like to record the song as well as the drums at the same time. Can I connect it to one of the 1/4" jack in the back without losing any of my 8 mic inputs in front? I hope this makes sense. Thank you!
Hmm. I honestly don't know! I'd imagine there's a way to do it, but I've never tried it myself. I've always either just listened to the iPod separately without hearing the drum audio as I play, or put the songs into Cubase and routed the sound through the headphones. The drums are already loud enough for me to hear, so I don't generally listen to the audio of the drums when I record - sorry I couldn't help you out here!
1. Just the overheads need phantom power because they are condenser mics, but that means you still have to turn on phantom power for some of the dynamics (at least in my case).
2. I'm not sure I know what you mean by this - could you elaborate?
Thanks for watching the videos; I'm really glad you found them helpful!
Trying to find out how to EQ my kit and there are billions of sites but they all have really specific KHz and Hz to boost/reduce when the Behringer mixer I have (similar to one shown) only has a USB input which turns all your tracks into ONE track on the computer. This means I can't EQ each drum part seperately and have to do all the EQ with just the preset "high", "mid" and "low" which isn't great.
Hey I'm extremely new to all this, I need to know a few things : (by the way I have a presonus firepod with cubase LE)
My Cubase is only picking up the first two inputs that are marked "mic. Instrument". How do you get the other imputs recorded?
Also, my speakers aren't playing back anything when I record something. They work With all the rest of the computer but not playback of the recorded track. HELP PLEASE!
@TheRozzaB hey im new at this too and i had the same exact problem. what you do is you go to devices > device setup > vst audio system > choose recording device (ex. TASCAM US-1800) click ok and it will ask you to switch something, just click switch. then after that go to devices > vst connections > and from the scrolly bar pick 16 mono. line up the inputs that are being used and not connected. after that go to edit and add audio track. make sure its mono and it is as many mics as you have.
@TheRozzaB after that, line up the tracks you just added to the mic. once you do that, select all the mics. click the little record button in each track to enable recording and after select all tracks by press ctrl and clicking on all of them. then your ready to record. if you have a headphone jack in your device then you can use that to listen to yourself after recording but if you want to listen to it on your computer your guna have to go back to device setup and change your device again.
@frooto2 Thanks Man, Appreciate it! I needed to activate all the Buses etc and Select mono! I was attempting it with Stereo I think. Again thanks a lot!
sick sound, I'd say maybe less bass on toms, a liiiiiittle more bass on the kick and more gain on the kick, but just like you said, it's all about your own tastes, and this video certainly proves that the eq really makes the difference, excellent vid, maybe the best on youtube about drums eq!
Do you use a mixer? If you do can you show me how to EQ your drum set to make it sound good? Like show me how you mix your drums to get that awesome sound.........Can you tell me how you mix your snare, bass, and overhead? Awesome Cover! xD
I have that smaller mixer in your video........can you tell me exactly how you EQ all your drums? im having a hard time looking for good sound...Especialy on my snare and bass. Can you please show me,tell me, or send a picture of the exact mixer with the EQ settings the way you want it?
I don't use a mixer any more, so I don't have exact settings; you have to make sure the drums are tuned well, then mess with the EQ in moderation until you shape the sound you want. In my opinion, toms and the bass drum sound good when you cut out mids, but the snare is a different beast; you really need to mess around a lot with minor tweaks to make t sound like you want it. A little reverb helps fill out the snare sound, as well.
FX are different effects, like reverb, that you can add to the raw file. PAN is how you want to position that mic's sound in the stereo mix - for example, if you panned a track all the way to the left, you'd only hear the sound recorded on that track on the left of your final stereo mix. MON I'm assuming is "monitor," which would likely be used more for live situations when you want to hear what you're playing.
Check out 2:55 - I combined the overhead EQ with snare EQ since the mix of the two gives the snare sound. I leave mids and highs in, but cut out the lows - this way, I get definition of tom/snare attack and pick up the cymbals, but if there is too much low end it can muddy the mix up and lose a lot of the clarity.
These videos are awesome! However, I have a question based on my setup. I am using a Behringer ub1202 mixer and I plan on buying the UCA222 for an interface. The mics I have are two SM57's one BETA52 and one SM58. I also plan on getting two MXL 990's to use as overheads. Would this setup be ok or should I look in a different direction? All answers would be appreciated - thanks
The info is amazing! I was just wondering, did you use the mixer that you were showing in the video or did you use one on the computer? Because the one you were showing only had four channels and you've got a bunch of mics.
I use an audio interface (detailed in the "equipment" section) that handles all the mics going into the computer. I just showed the mixer to give people who don't have AI's a better understanding of how EQ works.
Thanks for checking out the videos - I'm glad they're helpful!
oh i see, so its better when you run them through an audio interface! Damn i should of waited before i bought a mixer. ha oh well, oh and one last question, Say your gonna play a live show how would you do it? Like would you run them into a mixer or an interface and then to the speakers? An if its a interface how would you eq it?
As far as live shows go, I honestly have no idea how the interface setup would work, since I've only messed with recording. The mixer output would run to the speakers like you said, though.
I really appreciate all the help you have given me,Thanks. So my mics run into my mixer and from there they run into my computer but when i record them on Mixcraft they come out as one track and i was wondering how do i get each mic in a seperate track? Pls help, Thanks
As far as I'm aware, you cannot have separate tracks running into the computer. The reason I use the setup I do (the 2 Firepods) is because it allows for individual track editing - most, if not all, mixers are not capable of this; you're doing the mixing on the board before the sound is actually recorded, whereas with an audio interface the sound is recorded, then processed afterward.
What you're describing is exactly what I do, only with Firewire instead of USB. The sound goes straight into the computer, where it's recorded - after that, all the EQ and other effects are applied to the individual tracks in post-processing.
this video is so helpfull! could you possibly tell me eq settings for snare, bass and any tips for floor toms? oh and what eq settings should the overheads have?
@SnareSpectre awesome thanks for the feedback! YOUR VIDEO IS GREAT BTW but could you tell us how to eq the snare, bass, and overheads in a STANDARD MIXER?
A parametric EQ gives you a LOT more control because you're not limited to simply using 2-5 knobs to augment the sound. If you pause the video at 3:27, you can still see, though, that the mids are bottomed out, while the lows and highs have been increased a little. This could be roughly mirrored by turning the "mids" knob counter-clockwise and the the "high" and "low" knobs clockwise on a standard mixer - the idea is still the same. Feel free to PM me if you still have questions!
I meant turn the mids down, so they are less present in the mix than the highs and lows - which is where (in my opinion) the best sound of the toms comes from.
@SnareSpectre Alright, one more thing, how would you prefer to set the EQ settings for the bass drum? Mine's sounding kind of "boxy". Should I do the same thing? Turn the mids down?
The pictures at about 3:45 in this video show you how my bass drum mics are EQed - in one there are no lows because I want it to pick up the "click" attack, and in the other (the far mic) I EQed it similarly to the toms, with lows boosted to pick up the depth of the sound and highs to blend in more attack...in both cases, there are very little mids, as the mids do tend to make any drums sound "boxy."
You have answered all my "curious" and "what if" questions here. I guess I am too picky on my tuning... I try to get my naked raw drums to sound like they are naturally EQ'd, But I guess it will help in the long run after they DO get EQ'd and just make them sound even better. You can hear how they sound in my vids dude, I recorded with a Flip HD camera and it sounds like they are mic'd, it's pretty sweet. Thank you again.
Ive seen all your videos. im starting from scratch and i would like to know how much everything is going to cost. like mics. that box thingy and audio programmm
Hey man you mentioned what the EQ settings were for your toms on the mixer, do you think you could let me know what they are for your snare? What happens when there is phantom power on dynamic mics
MarcAntoineVezina 1 week ago

Nothing. I think some older dynamic mics get ruined by it, but I've never heard of it happening to modern mics.

By far the best explanation on the web. Good Job. I have 2 questions:
