What qualifies one as a djembe master is the ability play what runs through your mind, just like talking, whilst using the full range if the drum, with clear technique. The same way that we (should) have mastery over spoken word, a master drummer has mastery over the drum...
Maybe my favorite djembe video on youtube. Great playin, and equally great vibes. Lots of laughing, smiling, and love. The djembe brings the people together.

probably the fact that one is a great musician and an admired teacher, has all the technique needed ad does some crazy stuff like we see here. and is able to have so much fun with music.
being a great and modest person probably helps too. well, seckou is one of the best i've seen and known.
Seckou Keita is such a warm and lovely spirit!! He came into my djembe class in Chicago last year - I recognized him as the Kora player on Mamady Keita's "Live at Coleur Cafe" with Sewa Kan video concert. So, if you like his djembe playing, check him out on Kora - WOW!!! I know he has great reverence for Mamady Keita as a Master Drummer, so I think it's cool here that he borrows from Mamdy's "Djembe Kan" in his own solo here.
point taken....in jazz i hear the same phenomenon is called "quoting", which can be a way of showing reverence to a particular source. i agree that the "ego" you inject in this dialog doesn't apply-it didn't for me or, i think, Seckou, does it for you?
this is called : sonnailles, oreilles, or sessés (depending of the country and the region) the metal rings vibrate with the drum vibrations and add a metallic tint to the drum sound.
The metal shakers around the head of the djembe are called Ksink Ksink, the are similar to a snare, or shaker. They add another dimension to the sound. Traditionally they were made to resembe shields used during battle. It is said they also aid in tuning the drum when played out in the sun....

A master traditionally was someone who knew all the traditional rhythms for the festivals and celebrations of the village that he lived.

is that some sort of secret head-dress ordeal on his djembe only masters get? :x
ExampleAdam 3 years ago
They are metalic additions that add a slight rattle during play. He can use them like a drummer would use cymbals. Not limited to a master drummer.
