This scene mirrors "Dooku Vs Anakin" (ROTS) and "Windu Vs Palpatine"

For the first half it's Vader = Dooku and Luke = Anakin, but Luke chose not to kill.

And in the second half Luke = Palpatine (with the exception of being backfired by his own lightning) & Palpatine = Windu, both characters have created an intense moment for Anakin/Vader to make a quick decision (for the same reason too; to save the ones he loved).

The whole Sith business is full of irony; Plagueis, Vader, Palpatine...

luke played the same game that the emperor played to win his father. the emperor, played weak with mace windu, and asked for anakins help. luke, after he threw away his light saber, asked for his father's help, the emperor kept on jolting him, finally anakin turnes back. notice luke is still focused, that immediately he looks up to see his father destroy the emperor. it comes full circle.
