Just so everybody knows, the sprint accelerated at 100G. It was going so fast after one second flight that the nose of the missile was incandescant. Its top speed was mach 10. So this film aint sped up.
@finchiestiffler79 In the case of SPRINT it would have been carrying a nuclear warhead. That would have been plenty close enough for a successful intercept.
@finchiestiffler79 Really, fail, really! WTF would some pogue poser know about ABM interceptors? This was so unnerving to the Soviets in the 60's they shit their pants and came scurrying back to the negotiation table to sign the SALT I missile treaty. And if you would read some interesting facts about the goddamn missile, you would already know that 100 ft above the silo it was already through Mach1 and 11 seconds later was at Mach 10 and still accelerating.
the launch part is very sped up, watch the plants in the foreground & the behaviour of the plume at ground level, it looks like around 4x real. this was either a promo video to show dumbass beancounters who would otherwise not be impressed, or some idiot arsed around with the original. compare to other sprint launches to see the difference, some of those are prolly sped up too, when ur clever like me, u can see thee things instantly
@thetrolone I can see why you think what you do, but this is normal speed! It was fired from the tube with explosives, and once it left the tube, the first stage was used up within 1.2 seconds, and produced 650,000 lbf of thrust!
Interestingly enough.....the radar guidance was so precise on the Sprint, largely because it was a last ditch weapon system, it had to be "de-tuned" while conducting these tests against reentry vehicles to avoid physically striking the targets....all that from 50 yr old technology !!
I know someone very well who moved from engineer to management on this program. Arcmate, it was about 3 times faster than this video, 1st stage burn was 1.2 seconds. SPRINT was initially intended to protect cities also, but was budget cut back to only IBM site protection, and then only one site, where it was operational for 1 day. Congress defines idiot. Lasers are measured in watts, not volts. You would MUCH rather set off a 1kt neutron over head than the 1-10MT(s) (10K X) coming in.
Other interesting facts: The missile glowed incandescent in flight, a burning oxyacetylene torch would have cooled it. Accel was 100 gs. Ring laser gyros were developed for this kind of technology because mechanical gyros were way too slow to spin up, and couldn't stand the loads. Range safety was way more lax back then (I know cause Ive worked with them recently), and the launch was viewed very closely and personally. The viewer said the launch wasn't a burn, it was an explosion.
From an old head who remembers the program and the missile: At 14 feet above the pad, the missile was moving at the muzzle velocity of a .45 caliber bullet. 5 seconds after launch it had reached Mach 10.
A deal was done between the USSR and the US to stop developing such weapons. Part of detente and all that stuff. The US would like to restart development to protect against rogue states making an attack. Sprint was a last line of defence - if it missed then you could kiss a city goodbye. Spartan would have a go at longer ranges. Sprint really was as fast as it seems in the video. Phew!
And another reason is that it uses a nuclear device to shot down the incoming missile. 1Kt for 100Mt is worth but 1Kt for clearing a scud would not. (IMHO)
Right. But I see an obvious solution: We share all ABM technology with the russians. We coordinate with them and even share some of the missiles. Because it would never stop a russian attack, we dont lose anything by giving them the same tech. Then they dont have any reason to complain. The world would be safer with more ABM stations around every big city.
Because the accuracy of the guidance systems on these missiles required the use of a nuke on the interceptor. It's generally a bad idea to be setting off nukes over your own territory.
That is some crazy acceleration. If there were human aboard he would turn into a red paste.

@SkyyCaptainn It was fired with an explosive piston, so it was similar in some ways, to a bullet from a gun.

I read somewhere that it was like 25,000 g's on takeoff.

How come we don't use these as missile interceptors now?
jmr1068204 3 years ago
Nevermind...haha, it looks like it missed. :-D
jmr1068204 3 years ago
Good question... No it didnt miss. This rocket would detonate a 1KT ER nuclear device near the RV. This was a "hit" in that respect.
Why dont we use it anymore? Well why use old rockets when you can build new ones at 10x the price?

the problem is this technology negates MAD
DocGorilla 2 years ago
It can be argued that highly accurate warheads on SLBMs such as Trident C4 and D5 negate MAD also.

maybe they would be able to reverse engineer it and find a way to make them useless

1Kt at 5+km altitude is basically harmless!

I think this technology has been surpassed by laser based weaponry. Even faster, and more cost effective since you don't require ammunition.

Yes it does. Thousands of volts.
