@sstslayer A glute hame raise is an excellent exercise. A weighted one is even tougher. But it's common sense of weight placement. What's the point? The glute ham is a posterior chain movement. His hand placement doesn't add shit to that movement it is a challenging isometric hold for the upper body. It's like doing a bench press and a leg extension or a squat with curls. It's stupid and doesn't benefit the main movement. So yes it's like doing a squat on a bosu ball.
@sub7design You're almost right. Extending the arms out to the front (overhead) would increase the length of the lever, increasing difficulty greatly. Try doing a GHR bent at the waist, easy right? Now do a straight one, harder? It's a longer lever.
