A lot of humor takes something that's meant figuratively and turns it around by using it literally - in this case the space between the fingers. This is a dry explanation and there's a lot more needed to make the joke work, but it's still the foundation for it. A lot of KITH skits are like this and it's part of what I love about them.

I suppose it depends on the person's particular brand of humour and upbringing. I grew up watching similar things, so naturally I loved KITH too... and I love newer shows which are similar as well: TPB, UCB, and Chris Lilley's shows for example. I guess it's sort of an aquired taste, although many people seemed to have aquired it.
