i have this subwoofer installed in a 10.5 cubic ft cylinderic enclosure tuned to 16Hz + 1500 watts of power, i could dismantle my house with it if i wanted to
Nice job on the woodworking. The 1.5" walls and good bracing should deliver some very nice accurate bass. I'm excited to see the finished product!
I just put the specs you gave into my speaker response plot program (WinISD) and it shows a F3 dropoff of 20Hz. I only say this because you had mentioned that you wanted it to go to 15Hz in your other video. I don't doubt that it will, but it going to be around -10dB according to the program, maybe -6-7dB with in-room response.
Great info you provided. The 20hz roll off is what I expected. To get 15 hz would have required a 13.5 cu ft cabinet with two 4" dia x 33 long ports according to CSS. That was much too big. So I had to settle for the 20hz roll off. Still most of the bass information I'm looking for should come though with little problems.
I've been looking at doing a build just like this for quite some time now. Still struggling to find a good balance of size, shape, and response. I'm curious, what are the final dimensions of your enclosure, and how long are each of the 4" ports? Also, if you happen to know or have an educated guess, how much do you think this thing will weigh when complete? I would have to guess around 160lbs at least.
The dimensions are roughly 28"W x 21" d" 34" h. The ports are 17" long. As for balancing the size of the enclosure. I tend to shy away from doing small enclosures for a given woofer as small enclosures causes the woofer to use allot more of its Xmax to achieve the same results than if it were in a larger enclosure. The less excursion the woofer needs for reproducing a given signal the better the voice coil's alignment and thus more accurate the bass. I expect Goliath to weigh 200lbs when finish.
my 18 was in 6.2 and it fuckin' hammered on 175 rms.
when I put the box in a ford bronco the roof fuckin' rippled.
but for real though, Dayton is epic when it comes to woofers, the CSS should do nicely for ya though, I mean if I had the cash i'd go with a soundsplinter RL-p 18. 420$ shipped and has a beastily xmax of 30mm, it also has an spl level of 92db sensitivity, meaning this bitch can hammer hard
Indeed. I'm looking forward to hearing Goliath in action. One thing about the tuning. In most cases a car audio subwoofer is tuned higher than those for home use to compensate for cabin gain. Also audio from movies can plunge to subsonic levels which puts the tactile rumble in an action movie's explosions. The same applies to pipe organ music. This demands a subwoofer tuned low to extend roll off below 20 hz.
true, from what I've learned the xmax t/s parameter really affects the low end farther than sensitivity when it comes to frequencies under around 40hz, I bet that RL-P would be rediculous with something like the TC-Sounds 3HP, because it'd probably boost the xmax to a number around 38MM+
just picture an 18 delivering nearly 80mm pole to pole, now thats rediculous there :D
I generally find that building a custom box usually never sounds as good as simply buying one. Usually you can find em at auctions for next to nothing. However just from looking at it , the box seems much to large for only a 15 inch 600w sub. Might want to consider a better sub for it. Or make it an 18inch.
Is that your dad in the background? Did you build a ht for yourself in your parent's house???

29hz is usually the best route for most woofers.
