It already has prerecorded routes into it if you decide to take a road trip around your state or others Also it takes you through some nice sight seeing scenery. you can ether choose a point of interest within the categories or create your own routes with multiple points of interest. As of the 3D zoomed in all the way, yes it shows direction of travel.

Nice video how does the trip planner thing work?,also if you have it set on 3d view and zoomed in all the way does it show direction of travel?.
