@zorandesign yep, games like CoD and Halo pretty much have simplified and diluted the FPS experience so much.

Its all about big explosions and action sequences with mundane hallways where you shoot, take cover, regenerate health, shoot again, watch a cinematic, shoot shoot, cover, regen health, shoot shoot and watch another cinematic.

Basically these games are asking so little out of players now, no challenge, no backtracking, nothing.

Its nice their more accessible, but at what cost?

This is THE game I played when I was young. I never really was into Doom, and I had never heard of Hexen (which I found later and consider it one awesome piece of scheisse), so this was my game of choice back then. I really liked the fantasy-like setting and the enemies, which all I named after my schoolmates... I really had issues back then...

I loved the DOS games when I was a kid. I used to play this, Blood, and Redneck Rampage. Why can't they make games like those anymore? FPS' today don't have the sense of adventure that they did in the 90's; I loved driving my fanboat around the swamp in Redneck Rampage, and exploring the haunted cemetary in Blood. Now they just string together five hours of shooting minorities, add multiplayer, and send it to the stores... I need a soap-box to stand on.

ho ho! long time since I`ve seen this game.. probably around 15years ago.. still remember that the cheatcodes for doom works in this game aswell.. only differens is that the opposite happens. IDDQD makes u imortal in doom, but kills u in heretic. IDKFA that gives u all weapons in doom. takes away all your weapons in heretic and replaces it with a regular wooden staff that u only can poke with :D incredible that just by seeing this video makes me remeber :)

I downloaded this game to play on the zdoom engine. Really fun game and superior to Doom in many respects. I hope they eventually put this game and it's sequel Hexen on Xbox Live Arcade. Younger gamers really need to give these older games try. Despite having crude graphics and game mechanics by todays standards, are still a lot of fun to play. I have more fun playing these older FPS shooters than I do most of the newer ones.

Back then the games were trying to be as gory and dark as they could, but they were limited by technology. Modern games have the technology but are limited by political corectness. I mostly played at second hardest, but I don't think even hardest is too bad, I've tried it. Though some of the toughest levels get insane.

The trick is just understanding the enemies really.
