I got one 750 Gb myself, and it's perfectly silent. I Sleep in the same room, with the HDD just next, and I just can't hear it....
Bad luck for your item, but don't make people scare to buy it !

LaCie is known to take the cheapest harddrive and put them in their shell.
My tip is, buy the shell (costs around 20-30 $, converted from swedish kronor) and then by a reliable internal harddrive for ~100 $.
I use 2x Samsung F3 1TB disks, internal in my PC and have a transfer rate of 150 MB/s between this disk (1 month old now).

Mine is exactly the same. No fan, but an extremely noisy hard disk inside. Never gonna buy a Lacie anymore.

Well, I sent this one in...and they replaced it with a brand new one, that does NOT make that noise! It has worked well so far...but I haven't had it long.

no it runs off circulated air so it needs no fan just enough space around it to let air in ^_^

@timpos546 other than apple i have a WD 500gb mypassport HD. WD comes with a 3 year warrenty on it, there good drives
@randomrazr Yup my dad has a 250gb Western Digital and its very good but im satisfied with my Lacie. :)
