In the video it looked like they were just hitting the ball back and forth.
I think that it would be better to play to win. Then like Happy said, observe yourself playing. If you manage to achieve this the usual feelings that arise when winning or losing should melt away. Perhaps the world with them too ;)
We've all heard of athletes reaching 'the zone' in the middle of a game right? Nothing wrong with competition IMHO. As long as you realise you're only playing against yourself.
@AlleBellA It's completely correct, I play my best tennis when I have nothing to lose (mind is clear i.e. lose a point who cares). My Freshman year of college NCAA I was ranked top 25 in the US because I had no expectations.
...But... A game is a competition, it has winners and losers. That's the way it has been for thousands and thousands of years, so who corrupts who here? To compete is built into the DNA of practically all living things.
Skillit272...I think you're missing the whole point. The true competition in "Zennis" is to try and beat the human idea of losing focus. Modern day has made us really loose the ability to truly live and see life for what it is. The competition is to increase awareness rather than "beat" another human being for some sum of money...which shows that we are just a greedy race.
At first I thought it was going to be some touch-feely pseudo-commie crap, but it seems they are only using tennis as the vehicle for experiencing and exploring zen. Personally, I think Kendo, or hitting a baseball is more conducive to getting away from the conscience mind than the Tennis shown here.
McEnroe probably didn't practice Zen.

Tennis as meditation for the rich - hahaha. Everything is good enough, if it brings money...

that's why they make these kind of videos, duh. And as far as I watch on the news, the mindset you describe is not working very well.
