I had the pleasure of hearing and seeing Segovia live in the '60s. My next favorite guitarists are the Romeros. I do not play the guitar, but I love to listen to fine musicians.
The father of classical guitar, all respect! But among his students and successors there are many who play better than he did, this is the way it goes so often, also outside the realm of music. But he deserves the honour and credits for making the guitar a recognised classical instrument.
@stilklik "many of his pupils"...? Who do you have in mind..? Surely not the likes of "bluegrass players" such as John Williams or Christopher Parkening..
@BoggieEngineer I am a death metal Person. A play in a death metal band. Yet. I come here and listen to Segovia Because of witch how he plays. I have spent years perfecting his style into my own. You know how many people i get coming up to me and ask "how do you play like that" One word my friend. "Segovia". Music is great, But why do should just listen to death metal? Just death metal? Not going to happen. Segovia is a master and SO is Chuck Schuldiner. Just saying. Dont judge other music.
There are 6 jelous people out there, Im not one of them. Theres a thousand words I want to say in response to this video, but what it comes down to is: Wow, respect.
So...seriously, I don't understand how someone could arrive at a video of Segovia playing Bach and then "dislike" what they see/hear. What were they expecting?
I don't know if I'd go that far, but they do need to either grow up or find a more useful way to feel important. Till then, I'd suggest we ignore them and not give them the satisfaction of attention.
@BoogieEngineer Who will then, if they're anything like the death metal band-members/fans I know, will sit down, grab a drink and press the replay button to enjoy this performance again. Because No matter what music you play, this is stuff that simply needs to be respected.
@777ElectroHarmony777 I have to protest against that comment. While it is true that many great metal guitarists had exposure to classical guitar or incorporated classical music like Bach and Vivaldi in their playing, I can think of almost none who were "great students" of classical guitar. I think Randy Rhodes was the closest because he was actually trying to get a degree in classical guitar before his death. IMO, I think he had the most talent of any metal guitarist and I idolize him.
@777ElectroHarmony777 Mom buys you a nylon string guitar, you don't learn to read music and play pentatonic scales, join metal band. Instant PhD in classical guitar.
@BoogieEngineer since up posted this 2 weeks ago, it's 6 now.... lol. My buddy is one of the best guitarists i know, and he was classically trained, then went to dethmetal, and then jazz, bluegrass, u name it. I think he's still only 21/22, but you just gotta give props to Bach, and of course the flawless performance bye Andres.
@robymyles That's not a reason for not trying - can you play any Bach? If not, I recomend you start - you'll learn an amazing amount and enjoy yourself immensely - and even if you can't play like Segovia, you'll play more like him if you try than if you don't!!
