The music that accompanies Rank Odeon's "This Is Cinema" branding from 3:45 is "Release of Energy" composed by Francis Monkman. It's on KPM 1224 - Classical Concussion
That music that accompanies the Morris Marina advert is by Mike Vickers. I've got the actual music tracks to much of these adverts on here. All in glorious stereo.
Takes me back to the 80's when I worked as a Projectionist at the Gaumont and the Savoy ,South Shields. The Gaumont had Rank Screen Services and the Savoy had Pearl and Dean,Happy days indeed!
I wish we had ads like these in America... something about overseas advertising is really unique and creatively put together. Really dig the Rank Advertising intro in the beginning!
The queen trailer is from 1952! The Queen has lived for 57 years now. Little known fact: usually when "God Save Thy King (or Queen) was played at the end of each feature presentation, moviegoers would quickly leave the theater. How unBritishlike of them!
@megaben99 That's actually not an American song, although "God Save The King (or Queen)" provided the melody for "My Country Tis of Thee". It's just that the lyrics for both are different. "God Save the King (or Queen)" is officially the United Kingdom's National Anthem, just as "The Star Spangled Banner" is the U.S. National Anthem.
That *is* Harry Enfield in the first Heineken ad isn't it? Funnily enough I remember seeing it at the time but not recognising him - possibly it was a little before he came to TV prominence...
Loving your work Mr Woods! I wonder if Rank Screen Advertising used to generate much custom by showing their address & phone number at th end - can't imagine people jotting it down in the gloom of the auditorium somehow!
As for 'This is Cinema', that build up still sends a shiver down my spine. Wonderful stuff.
Sheet! ...That's exactly what i used to think about the Rank screen phone number . Like ' oh I just wanna sell my product ..cinema advertising seems a good idea .. i'll just get out my notepad ' .. Hmm .. But maybe the Yellow pages was all you had . So you just had to look for phone numbers anywhere you could find them.
Yes they did. Ever watched the movie "The Smallest Show on Earth?"

Wow, the last one is outright propaganda! Was this common or did Rank Screen Advertising have a very close relationship with the royals?
lyris1 9 months ago
@lyris1 The National Anthem used to be played out at the end of all cinema showings, and also just before closedown on the BBC as well.
Used to be standard practice - I seem to remember it being common during the 70s.

0:42 Homage to the classic VW ad ("Best selling car in Japan").

What year did that Harry Enfield Heiniken ad first show? I'm guessing circa 1987, judging by the Beastie Boys influence.
On a sidenote, an ad like that would probably never get off the ground today, because Heiniken would have to pay Volkswagon to use their logo.

The music track at 0:52 was also used on a promo for Nine Network Australia in the early '70s.

"It's only Butterkist if our name is on the packet." That kind of goes without saying, right?

@GateStudios Did they seriously play "God Save thy King" at the end of each film in certain cinemas?

That Heineken ad must've stuck in Rank's craw (in paying homage to arch rivals Pearl and Dean!)
