Also, Ali was in the 'Golden' era of HW's, he beat 2/3 top ten ATG's in history, by stoppage, and some of them past his prime. But, Ali didn't use technique, just God given talent. I wonder how Ali would do in MMA? He controlled everyone in clinches, was pretty big for a HW, GOAT chin.

Rickson was great for his time, but he doesn't fight these days because he knows he will lose. Quickly. Badly. He doesn't have to fight young stars, he can fight Randy or Bas, or Sakuraba, any of those 3 would meet him in the cage or ring and punish him. He knows it. Loss = loss of students. Royce lost to Hughes. Not surprisingly, even though he is one of the alltime great fighters.
First, at 40 he physically is no longer in his prime whereas Hughes at 25 is. With both being about equally skilled that starts counting.
Secondly, Royce trained almost exclusively in Brazil, home ground where he is the top dog so to speak. It's hard to learn more when you're the best around.
Hughes trains with toptalents from all over the place, many different styles.
Rickson is well-known for playing it safe by fighting unknown fighters. His last fights were Takada & Funaki, both of whom are not very good. He got the 480-0 because many were ignorant of submission. Rickson fans will hate me for saying this but it's true. In his prime these days he'll probably be like Noguera or someone similar. But not everytime is like that, look at Michael Jordan, has there ever been a guy that surpassed him? No. Has there ever been a greater player than Pele? @korvstopparen It is more complex, but in MMA, you can shift the game to your own area. In boxing, it's always stand up. MMA is jack of all trades, boxing is being a master. Also, Ali was in the 'Golden' era of HW's, he beat 2/3 top ten ATG's in history, by stoppage, and some of them past his prime. But, Ali didn't use technique, just God given talent. I wonder how Ali would do in MMA? He controlled everyone in clinches, was pretty big for a HW, GOAT chin.

yeah, the sport has evolved a ton but if you're really, really good at one aspect of the game you can still be very successful. look at demian maia for example. he's one of the best in the world at bjj and he's nowhere near the top in striking but he's 10-0 and he's going to be getting a title shot soon. so even if some parts of your game are raw you can make up for it by being elite in one aspect.

Apnisse said it - you need to compare current champions since sports evolve. In Rickson's time, he was the best. Hughes said that he would teach Royce how the sport has evolved and would send him back to the gym to learn some new techniques ... and Hughes was right. There is a lot of mma knowledge out there now. Rickson was a pioneer in one facet of mma.

He is in his fiftys compared to other MMA fighters who are in their prime. Besides comparing two people (in whatever subject) from two different timelines is absurd, there can only be what ifs. Fights have also changed a lot. Of course, many times, we see an older fighter (such as boxing) beat a younger man, the peak for MMA is about thirty, slightly older, where a decade of experience brings mastery, combined with a younger body.

Royce lost to Hughes. Not surprisingly, even though he is one of the alltime great fighters.
First, at 40 he physically is no longer in his prime whereas Hughes at 25 is. With both being about equally skilled that starts counting.
Secondly, Royce trained almost exclusively in Brazil, home ground where he is the top dog so to speak. It's hard to learn more when you're the best around.
Hughes trains with toptalents from all over the place, many different styles.
