  • it's funny , L0ve the Video Work & anything Leon is Good :) C

  • What does all this stupid verbal bickering have to do with Leon Russell?

  • Awesome in any year, any look, any age . . . wannabe nothing he just IS!

  • @cawthonator64 Thumbs up!

  • Jerry Lee Lewis wannabee.

  • @terrible714 I'm a Jerry Lee Lewis wannabee myself. What the hell's wrong with that?

  • Comment removed

  • On Shindig no less awesome !

  • Tulsa native, Leon fan for 40 years, BUT I had never seen this old of stuff. Fantastic.

  • jews... stealing our music... then claiming the credit...

  • @CrackerJackLee What?????

  • @CrackerJackLee You sir; Are a creep!

  • @MrTenitis

    go back to your drugs...

  • @CrackerJackLee I'm from Georgia But your definitely a dumb ass cracker

  • @MrTenitis

what does the fine state of Georgia have to do with "dumb ass crackers"...?? you've been raised on circumsized dick...

  • @CrackerJackLee You've never heard of Georgia Crackers? You unenlightened asshole!

  • @MrTenitis

i've heard of Ritz Crackers... what you got against Georgia, anyhow...?

  • @CrackerJackLee I love Georgia and despise ignorance. You sir are an ignorant racist just like the stereotypical Georgia cracker. I just used that as an example of another nasty name people use when the stereotype people.

  • @CrackerJackLee According to your asinine reasoning it is better to suck uncircumcised dick then circumcised dick. That's what you inferred! Don't get mad at me! Personally I don't suck any but I bet you would have had a ball with Hitlers! Bigot!

  • @CrackerJackLee Why the stupid racial slur, he never stole the music he PLAYED it, the credit went to the right place and your comment should be in the trashcan.

  • @rearly62

all of the entertainment business has been hijacked by jews... they all copy Americans and then reap the money... it's a closed nest for an inbred ethnic power group... they got rid of the grand ol' opry from the media... they pushed out all history that enobles non-jews and replaced it with their trash culture... why listen to a jew in costume singing an American's song...? listen to the real thing... it's far better...

  • @CrackerJackLee In my humble opinion your comments belong with you, in the gutter. You are a stupid racist who classifies people based on their religion rather than their ability. Without people like Leonard Chess real musicians would have found it much more difficult to break into the national consciousness. Go play with a gator and fuck off commenting on real music.

  • @rearly62

LOL! Leonard Chess and all the other parasitic hangers-on made fortunes off these duped artists... you call me a stupid racist... but you're just plain stupid... go worship your rip-off artists... you have the mentality of a well trained slave...

  • @CrackerJackLee Your knowledge of the history of American music is coloured by your stupidity. I prefer listening to original artists however I do not turn into some idiotic racist fool like you because someone has a different religion to me. Musicians have always been exploited by their agents and managers regardless of colour or creed. It may be difficult for you however stop being a stupid knobhead.

  • @rearly62

jackass... it has nothing to do with religion... it's an inbred ethnic group... they've cornered the market on entertainment... just look at the sheer numbers... if you ain't jew - you can't get in... that's why the quality has deteriorated... they have no one to copy... you're only allowed to watch... and they get the money... they change their names... they get nose jobs to pass as whites... black people have been robbed over and over by these people...

  • @CrackerJackLee By they you mean Jews? Jewish is a religion bone head.

  • @CrackerJackLee Leonard Chess started developing talent in 1946 that nobody else would have ever noticed if he didn't bring them to our attention. Wake up and smell the coffee! .

  • @CrackerJackLee Creeped out Canadian Bigot!

  • @rearly62

listen to the real deal.... it's far far better... they only wear the long hair and glasses and get-up so they look like white people...

  • @CrackerJackLee Not your music bro; Your from Canada! The bayou music is from the United States South! I know a few Cajun Jews.

  • @MrTenitis

you know a few cajun jews...?? who...?? your parents...???

  • @CrackerJackLee Jesus was a Jew dumb ass!

  • @MrTenitis

    till they had Him killed...

  • @CrackerJackLee All the Jews didn't have him killed, just a few. Jesus had many Jewish followers. You don't have a leg to stand on bigot.

  • @CrackerJackLee My mom is from Maine. Her dad came down for the potato harvest and met my grandma so we all know about the Canadian immigration but that didn't make my mom, who is half French Canadian Cajun. Music belongs to everybody. How can anybody steal music. And if Jews are smart enough to make money off of it why be jealous. You dumb ass ignorant Canadian Hitler wannabee. You better wake up and read YOUR history books so you can see where this kind of hate gets people!

  • @MrTenitis

she would have been had her ancestors came from Acadia, Nova Scotia, Canada... if her ancestors came from Quebec, that would make her of French Canadian descent... Canada is a big place, my son... second largest country in the world... even bigger than Texas...! Tarnation...!

  • @CrackerJackLee No matter how many so called facts you throw at me you are just an ignorant bigot. Bigots are always well researched in their rationalizations, Bye Bye.

  • @CrackerJackLee Ignorance = Bigotry = ignorance end of conversation.

  • @MrTenitis

funny...? history books show that the Cajuns came from Canada... from Acadia... the Acadians... from Nova Scotia... never heard of Evangeline and the Acadian Expulsion from Canada by the Red Coat British...?? try reading a history book... it may get you de-hooked from circumsized dick...

  • @CrackerJackLee Go smoke some repressed white supremest pork you bigot!

  • @MrTenitis

cajun music comes from the fiddle... and the fiddle came to New Orleans from Nova Scotia, Canada... read it and weap... jews never created Cajun music... you smokin' too much circumcized dick for my likin'...

  • @CrackerJackLee Now your making homosexual, Homophobic assumptions about somebody you don't even know. From my experience online that is a characteristic of a repressed troll so you are not worth answering again. Cajun Music came from Cajun country not from where french Canadians emigrated from. they might be related to french music the same way bluegrass is related to Scotch and Irish music but it is essentially Cajun Louisiana Music unique unto itself not French Canadian.

  • @MrTenitis

LOL! boy, are you ever uneducated... you don't even know the origins of the people who make up America... did you think that the Cajuns came from the bayou...? they came from Acadia...

  • @CrackerJackLee They weren't called Cajuns yet bone head they were called Acadians or whatever they had to stay awhile to be called Cajuns jerk wad just like I had to stay awhile in GA to be called a southerner. Boy are you a dumb ass ignorant bigot.

  • I believe that's James Burton in the front right playing guitar...Leon did a bunch of records in the late 50s under the name Russell Bridges on Roulette Records and elsewhere

  • At this stage of his career he was a Jerry Lee Louis "wannabee."

  • @terrible714 Who wasn't?

  • @terrible714 Who wasn't?

  • I probably watched this because I never missed Shindig. But didn't realize what was what at the time. Leon was the coolest!

  • This is weird as I'm cooking this for friend tonight :O)

  • He was a handsome guy. You'd never know it in later years with his beard and long hair.

  • @Barnekkid I think Leon looked very handsome with his long hair and beard. I love his thick hair/

  • He has a chin?

  • Leon and Glen were both members of "The Wrecking Crew" session musicians. Backups for The Beach Boys and many other groups.

    :o)

  • Wow, even then Leon was a rebel with his hair way over his collar. I've only followed Leon since the Mad Dogs & Englishmen and saw the tour with Joe Cocker at SMU in Dallas.

If you like the Country side of Leon, I would recommend "Hank Williams Back". It's really good. It' sort of a mix between Country & Blue Grass.

  • Love This!

  • Not sure who looked more in their "element"...Leon or Glen! OMG!

    WE LOVED THIS!

  • Sexy young Leon is hot!

  • A JUMPIN ' TRACK w/ GLEN CAMBELL ON BANJO......and,

IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN, HANK WILLIAMS SR. WROTE THE LYRIC.

THE ORIGINAL MELODY IS FROM A FRENCH CAJUN TUNE CALLED " GRAND TEXAS".

GREAT VIDEO OF A GREAT SONG!

  • Classic Rock´n Roll and one of the icons of Hippie era :-D Amazing!!!! I love Leon

  • i want to be that cool!

  • Great performance

  • The whole Tulsa/delta blues thing. They TRIED to make it happen. never really caught on.

  • wow ... he sure looks different here.... sounds a little like " dr. john " <3

  • I believe Delaney Bramblet was a guitar player on shindig

  • Glen Campbell on banjo folks!

  • I can see a hippie just bustin' to get out!!!!!!!

  • Always played the piano like he owned it!Thanks for posting. It's priceless.

  • I've always hated this song, ever since Hank first recorded it. This version is pretty good, as it's boogie, but I saw Leon at The Palomino Club, in North Hollywood, in '78 or '79, and he blew me away. He sang this song as a GOSPEL number. I still hate this song, but I love it when Leon sings it.

  • Leon is now in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame!

  • Already looked cool and self-contained. Thanks for this great posting. Part of the treasure chest of his music, for sure.

  • @zbestwun Doesn't look like Delaney Bramlett.

  • It's hard picturing a clean-shaven Leon. He's awesome here too.

  • I love Leon's album The Union with Elton

  • He Has A Great Voice ..I never seen this before thank you for posting this ,Cheers from Canada..............

  • Young Leon looks like young Donald Sutherland

  • @judecreek2 Really, you think so? I don't see Donald, Donald was never that good looking! This is a great vid, he is so cute here, all clean shaven and all. But I love him as a long haired hippie. My kind of people.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. My favorite singer, and oh those sexy eyes.

  • Leon and Glen did another great take on this 20 years later on In Session from Hamilton wish i could find it,two good ol southern boys jammin.

  • Greetings from Brazilil for Leon Russel

  • I've always hated this song, from when Hank Williams first recorded it. Then, in 1979, I saw Leon do it at the Palomino Club, in North Hollywood. It was slow, bluesy, and gospel-like. I still hate the song, if it's sung by anyone other than Leon, but HE nails it.

  • Love the "Leon Glare" caught in it's early days!

  • @judecreek2 It's amazing that you spotted that "glare" (guess it's not really hard to find). You must follow Leon from years back because he always had this "look" in concert. First saw him back in '72 and then five more times since. Check out Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen here on the U. Leon does the glare there too!

  • I guess with a face like that he had to grow all that hair that he did ..to be taken seriously musically and not be just another idol. I wasn't familiar with his early stuff till seeing this.

  • I keep trying to get this video on line---it rocks

  • I have got to go see him in August in Charlotte~

  • That man oozes sex appeal.

  • Too bad they're all air-guitaring and lip synching

  • OMG... I LOVE IT... ; ) THANKS!!! ANGEL

  • Awesome - yep thats Glenn Campbell - the two of them are on a lot of albums back then as part of the wrecking crew that backed up all sorts of acts - beach boys, jan and dean, sinatra and so on........so funny his clean cut look compared to later!

  • Those eyes brother ..never left him!

  • Dang! The good stuff I find on youtube. I loved Leon Russell back in the 70's and also his Hank Wilson stuff. I saw him in '82 at PB Scott's Music Hall in the mountains of NC. Great show, sitting right beside the band.

  • Did you notice Glen Cambpell on the bango?

  • Fabulous look at Leon! Is somebody going to come up with some video from his 1973 tour with Rev. Patrick Henderson??? Please!!

  • I really wish there was a CD collection of his very early solo studio efforts if they do indeed exist. I'm sure there are reels somewhere in Hollywood with him rocking with the rest of the "Wrecking Crew" at Gold Star Studios or what have you.

  • Blows the freakin' mind to look at Leon's face here and know what he was going to turn into some years later. A very hairy man!

  • @MattHatter Wonder WTF brought that change on?? here in 1965 he's doing the rockabilly thing, around 68? 69? he's gone hippe. Whats with that??

  • He did a good job on this old Hank Williams tune.

  • Meh . . . little too rocked up for my taste. IMO, he did a damn sight better job eight years later on "Hank Wilson's Back."

  • Leon had that Rick Nelson seriousness even when he was ROCKIN !

  • No. Actually Leon may have arranged This Diamond Ring but it was written by Al Kooper

  • @gsdsteve That's correct, Leon only arranged it.. Is that Delaney Bramlett in the back on guitar?

  • @zbestwun2001 That's actually a young Russ Titelman behind Leon. He later produced George Harrison, among many others.

  • That's Glen Campbell on the banjer

  • I grew up in NOLA & this was one of my brother in laws favorite songs...he sang it all the time. Great video...thanks for posting.

  • ...this from the same guy that wrote 'This Diamond Ring' for Gary Lewis & the Playboys!

  • Not to mention writing: This Masquerade; A Song For You; Superstar; Hummingbird; Delta Lady; and many, many others.

  • @aammirr Arranged the song only.

  • he used to write JINGLES,too! and check out his work with Marc Benno!!!

  • @52joan I talk with Mark Benno a few times a year.. He is still working and touring.

  • I was the sound engineer on a tv series called "In Session" shot in Hamilton, Ontario in 1983. The show featured pairs of great musicians with a backing band. One of the episodes featured Leon Russell and Glen Campbell. They told some stories about their days as L.A. session musicians, and being in the Shindig house band. (Billy Preston was the other keyboardist!) Leon and Glen were both class acts.

  • Leon is the BEST. Every CD in my player is Leon.

  • This IS classic Leon, and take note of Glen Campbell on the banjo, in front.

Those were the days, before the Master of Space and Time found his place in the history of rock N roll.

  • @TulsaLaniB I would argue that there's definitely some Hank Williams in rock N roll.

  • Hell's bells! Leon Russell at age 23.

Where on earth did you find this?

And have you got any more?

  • @RHDvette - No kidding, this is soo cool, ain't heard this since I was 2 !! ; )

  • @RHDvette Leon wouldn't have turned 23 until April... And YES!!! These old clips are GREAT!!!
