Most of my friends are 50/50 (some can even have a typical Russian name and surname) but they all speak 2 languages fluently or sometimes they even speak bad Russian cos raised in a Latvian-speaking family.
I also know many good Latvian people who study Russian simply because it's often work related.
Latvian never will die. Latvian survived 700 years under different regimes, and it will continue to be one of the languages of this World. And EU is very good tool, because all languages in EU have the same rights and all laws and other texts should be translated in all 23 Languages of EU. And Latvian is 1 of these.
And I 'm happy that Russians who do not want learn Latvian is moving from here. They always want to find better place where to stay. And Latvia was just the best place in time of occupation - Baltic sea, rich culture and architecture, handsome people around. And the best for them - they have no need top learn local language. But this privilege is gone if they do not like return to some of countries where Russian is State language.
In all other World they need to learn local language to work, to go to shopping and do other daily needs.

In new generation this situation is better, but a lot of older people (also 30-40 years old) won't answer or speak Latvian.

I would agree, thanks for the information. Wrong stereotypes as well used because general population normally prefers latvian goods instead of others. Even here, in Ireland I still buy some latvian food and happy about it. As a member of a russian latvian community I could tell, for example, that russians prefer latvian beer and very loyal to it. The same about chirstmas trees and many other goods such as chocolate, milk, etc.

I have two neighbours — old men in their eighties. They have been best friends since high school. Nevertheless, during WWII, they fought on opposite sides — still remaining friends afterwards. They did not care about politics and had very little choice — they were just drafted. The "Nazi" one did not shoot any Jews, and the "Commie" one did not deport any Latvians, although their armies did. None of them think they were "lesser evil" — both armies were evil, just to different people.

Etniskais naids ir cilvēku aprobežotība, mums visiem ir jāmācas sadzīvot, nevis kurināt naidu, kā to dara TB u.c. nacionālisti. Visām nācijām ir savi grēki, arī mums. Visi tik redz krievu sliktos darbus, tādi ir, bet ir bijis arī atbalsts. Rūpniiecība attīstījās starujāk tieši cara un padomju laikos. Savukārt Ulmaņa laikos zemkopība bija augstākā līmenī, rūpniecībai nesasniedzot 1914. gada līmeni.

The thing is that we have some nationalistic people here who even teach their children to hate Russian-speaking since the kids are born!
That's sad.
Most of my friends are 50/50 (some can even have a typical Russian name and surname) but they all speak 2 languages fluently or sometimes they even speak bad Russian cos raised in a Latvian-speaking family.
I also know many good Latvian people who study Russian simply because it's often work related.

And EU is very good tool, because all languages in EU have the same rights and all laws and other texts should be translated in all 23 Languages of EU. And Latvian is 1 of these.

In new generation this situation is better, but a lot of older people (also 30-40 years old) won't answer or speak Latvian.
Latvia is the only land on the whole World where Latvian is a state language. So, please be tolerant and learn and speak in Latvia Latvian. Is that a big problem? I'm thinking - no. It is just a question of culture and intelligence of these people who won't speak Latvian.

Ļoti liberālie krievu jaunieši masveidā balso par SC. Iesaku izlasīt Saskaņas Centra programmu. Tur nav ne miņas no liberālisma. Sociālisti, kas iestājas par divkopienu valsti, krievu valodas statusa paaugstināšanu, pilsonības izdāļāšanu un imigrācijas veicināšanu no NVS valstīm. Protams, mums nav jābaidās no krieviem, mums jābaidās no pāris partiju nonākšanas pie varas, uz ko metaforiski arī norāda šī reklāma.

Nu, varbūt kaut kāda atpalikusi, primitīva, ksenofobiska propaganda tā ir, 30-to gadu līmenī. Nav brīnums, ka to salīdzina ar nacismu.
Līdz šim biju pārliecināts, ka rusofobija LV nepastāv un ka tie krievi, kas nacionālistus saukā par nacistiem, smagi pārspīlē, bet tagad esmu nepatīkami vīlies un man būs grūti viņiem argumentēt, ka tā nav.

Tieši to pašu var attiecināt uz tevis teikto. Kur izpaužas ksenofobija? Kur izpaužas rusofobija? Racionāli, uz faktiem, statistiku balstīti spriedumi pēc definīcijas nevar būt fobija.

Kauns. Populistiski un naidīgi. Un ir skaidrs kā diena, ka šīs reklāmas mērķis jau nu nav veicināt ekonomisko patriotismu, jo tā aizskar un atgrūž lielu Latvijas iedzīvotāju daļu. Žēl, ka man nav naudas, lai uzfilmētu klipu pret tēbistiem.

I would agree, thanks for the information. Wrong stereotypes as well used because general population normally prefers latvian goods instead of others. Even here, in Ireland I still buy some latvian food and happy about it. As a member of a russian latvian community I could tell, for example, that russians prefer latvian beer and very loyal to it. The same about chirstmas trees and many other goods such as chocolate, milk, etc.

Honestly, I think this ad is crap. But not for the reasons You stated below. It would fit in the beginning of 20th century at best (if they had any ads then). It is very naive and populistic, but it clearly ain't fascist.

Since I actually AM a lawyer, I will take it as permission to continue to play with words. And I am also 1/2 Russian and still this ad doesn't offend any of my "halfs". No more, than reading such newspapers as "Chas" or "Vesti" offends my Latvian 1/2.

I've seen a lot of such videos and not necessarily I agree with all of those. But let's do it in a case by case way. Do you like this particular ad? Is it good for our relations? How many similar situations do you see in real life? Or you think that this is absolutely innocent ad without a discrimination of any kind in mind?

I am not fascist if I am protecting myself from likes you. All my words - I can repeat them to anyone and in court, in police - everywhere. I do not feel shame for my words. Don't tell me stories about language and stuff. When I lived there I never bought non-latvian Christmas tree and never called your language as dog language, in fact know that language. You maybe proud of this ad but remember - hatred never gives you good gatherings, this hatred could lead my children to kill yours. You want to close all russian schools in Latvia? You will see a lot non educated young people on the streets. You know what it means? Fear. You always in fear. Maybe it is enough?

Hatred? Hatred was started by Russians. During the 90's it was dangerous to be walk the streets during nighttime, because Russian gangs would often beat you up for being Latvian. Nobody wants your russians language here, nobody wants your culture. In fact, Moscow was the one that started badmouthing campaign of the Baltic states. Watch their propaganda TV from time to time. It's disgusting. You came as colonists, your culture was the one that wanted to destroy everything Latvian.

you better should go and educate this russians and teach them latvian. i'm 23 years old latvian, i can speak, read, write, talk and understand 3 language including russian. with no special studies, living in a country side, where is no other nationalities.
what's the real reason of that russians can't use latvian language to be educated? maybe they are just lazy? peace.

Those 'bad' russians from the video do not like an idea to buy latvian christmas tree but "aryan" looking female and her child especially want latvian one. From Latvia! - they say. This is my country my dear friend, I was born there. Latvia also remembers heroes who were killing innocent people, ripping apart children with bare hands in front of the crowd like hero pilot Cukurs for example. I grown up in a district were your german masters had ghetto for jewish people from where latvian police and volunteers were taking them to kill in Bikernieki forest. Please, that's just absurd. Nazis, not Latvians, were the ones who shot Jews — and, yes, some of those a**holes happened to be Latvian. And what does that prove? Some Nazis were gay, for that matter. Does that mean that there's something inherently Nazi about being gay? And, anyway, hailing mass murderers is nowhere near a common practice in Latvia — sure, there are some demented people who do it. But, then again, you can meet crazy people just about everywhere.

I would agree and disagree with you. We still all know history of waffen ss, Cukurs and what was his name ... Sarajs ??? I do not remember. Anyway, there were mass killings and there were latvians involved, I know this not only from books and films but from regular people who survived those times. My grandfather was in red army those days, latgalian partizan if you wish. He had choice to join germans but decided to join reds. It was smaller evil and he was protecting, not killing those people.

I have two neighbours — old men in their eighties. They have been best friends since high school. Nevertheless, during WWII, they fought on opposite sides — still remaining friends afterwards. They did not care about politics and had very little choice — they were just drafted. The "Nazi" one did not shoot any Jews, and the "Commie" one did not deport any Latvians, although their armies did. None of them think they were "lesser evil" — both armies were evil, just to different people.
