Shirley Jones was (and still is) one of the most talented actresses in Hollywood. Her performances in "Carousel," "Oklahoma" and "The Music Man" are stellar, and "Elmer Gantry" only showed she did not need to sing or dance to prove just how multi-talented she was. She most deservedly earned her Oscar. Lulu Bains is one of the most pitiful and memorable characters to grace the silver screen.
The irony is most people from my generation only know her as David Cassidy's TV mom!
I love Shirley and if you have something against her for heavens sakes don't post it on the Internet don't you have something better to do, like a job, or a hobby, or even just watching tv is better than bashing on the elderly. If that's all you can think of to say then you really should find something better to do. And if you don't like the oldies, are you a fan of like Miley Cyrus, because she seems like a great role model (sarcasm sarcasm). So please go waste your time somewhere else :-)
what bothers me more about oscar though is how blind it is: especially to comedy
peter sellers should have had three nominations for Dr Stangelove and won that year easily one of the most brilliant performances ever but Jones was very good in this, very touching probably whores get to show many sides, not such a one sided take as with most characters in fiction
Why do so many actresses win an Oscar for playing HOOKERS? Shirley Jones, Donna Reed, Basinger, Sorvino....I've got nothing against the performers, but it's a consistent trend down through the years that seems skewed and perverse.
@dumont1957 Liz for Butterfield 8. Yup. Guys play the mental defective, girls the call girl. Sorvino's weirdo hooker voice may have been the most annoying of all.
@dumont1957 I'm guessing "it's natural" for women to win Oscars for playing hookers for the same reason it's OK for old men (let's say Harrison Ford) to hav a rel. MUCH younger women (let's say Callista Flockheart), but it's NOT OK for an older woman (let's say Demi Moore) to have a rel. a somewhat yuounger man (let's say Ashton Kutcher) - i.e. the general cussedness of males in this society.
@dumont1957 I also think most of the people who win Oscars for playing hookers TEND to have an image generallt the complete opposite (Shirley, Donna, Mia)
I like them all. It is hard to pick favorites. I like Vanessa Redgrave in Julia, Hattie McDaniel in Gone With The Wind, Miyoshi Umeki in Sayonara, Dianne Wiest in Hannah And Her Sisters, Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls...and that is only a few!
@outinsider Wiest is one of my favorites my too! And I did like McDaniel, but I think Olivia Dehavilland should have won. I haven't seen Julia yet. I need to see Hudson again and I didn't like Umeki, but I haven't seen her in the context of the film. Who are some of your favorite Best Actress winners?
de Havilland in Gone With The Wind never stole the show as McDaniel did. Besides, de Havilland was technically a lead anyway. She said that in a recent interview. My favorite Best Actress winners are: Katharine Hepburn, Halle Berry, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Marion Cotillard, Helen Mirren...and that is only a few!
@outinsider Hepburn and Taylor for all the times they won? Here's some of my favorites that I made earlier:Holly Hunter, Susan Sarandon, Vivien Leigh (Both times), Maggie Smith, Jodie Foster (The Silence Of The Lambs), Susan Hayward, Anne Bancroft, Joanne Woodward, Anna Magnaini, Elizabeth Taylor (Who's Afraid), Katharine Hepburn (The Lion In Winter), Charlize Theron), Liza Minelli, Meryl Streep, Jessica Tandy, Diane Keaton, and Olivia Dehavilland (The Heiress).
I think they saw more than just the singing. If they gave Oscars to every actor who sang in a movie, and every singer who appeared in a movie, then Johnny Depp would have gotten an Oscar a couple of years ago. They saw an award-winning performance, and they rewarded it. I saw an award-winning performance and it won an Oscar. If people recognized how "bad" she is, she wouldn't be in movies or won a Grammy. Your taste is your taste, but you can't beat success.
Movies Jennifer Hudson has been in since her Oscar win: Sex And The City, Winged Creatures, The Secret Life Of Bees. Two out of the three were very successful films and continued her movie career. Her next movie is Winnie where she plays Winnie Mandela, Nelson Mandela's wife. Obviously producers, directors, actors, agents and other Hollywood people think of her as an actress. To add to that she has a strong fan base.
Of course they think of her as an actress, they want her to make them MONEY! With the title "Oscar-winner" they'll put her in any crap, even though she isn't suited for it.
according your individual opinion. Until you know what acting is and avoid tawdry Hollywood gossip and realize that everyone does things to make money (since Hollywood is a capitalism system), then well.

I mean people who actually look at the PERFORMANCE. Oscar voters saw her singing and checked off her name.
People have come to realize just how bad she is.
