I watched this on the Band of Brothers documentary, "We Stand Along Together." What a brave and knowledgable man Winters was. He will be forever remembered/
This man should deserve everybody's respect! This man was one of the reasons we won the war, a great, brave leader! :) This is how every soldier should act! and also the bravery of all soldiers of Easy Company! :)
@yogifalkmybitch they actually said in the book that they were glad to be airborne because the infantry of the line had it much worse, they were the true heroes they said. Please don't make false assumptions about men who are greater than us all
@pmpcorrea What has Nationality got to do with it ? For Christ sake the ACTOR who played him in the HBO garbage was an ENGLISHMAN The whole Winters thing is a lie There is proof easy to find Winters was a coward If you really are interested i will post with references evidence Facts not HBO fiction
@yogifalkmybitch Thanks for your reply. I referred to the nationality just because I don't know much about Americans heroes, or not heroes. I will searching. It is a pity if there isn't truth in the sentence quoted.
@yogifalkmybitch of course the film is fiction, but I have posted only the true sentence of the man. I'm sorry I have not reading the book yet, and the web just tell some facts.
MAJ Dick Winter passed away on 02JAN11 and the family didn’t make the announcement until 11JAN11. That was the request of MAJ Winter, the type and Man of Honor that He was. I just wished I could have met him before his passing. May GOD bless all of our Man and Woman in Uniform and keep them ALL Safe and Sound.
Total class and a true American hero! This man knew the true cost of war and the value of peace. Most (if not all) of our politicians have no idea. This man should have been President!
@nick5400: Part of the problem we have in modern-day America is that men like Major Winters can't run for President anymore, and moreover, men with his level of class and dignity wouldn''t want to, it has become such a circus to be in the public eye. I agree, though, we need men like him as leaders if we are to survive as the nation our Founders bequethed to us.
Loved ww2 for a long time now. Got into BoB when it first came out. Im only 19, but I remember looking up Dick Winters about a month or two before he died, seeing if he was still alive. Next thing I know I wakeup and literally it feels like the next day, he's gone. If I could only express my true feelings for not only him and his men, but for every sacrifice for this country that was ever made. I have great respect, and can only hope to repay them by joining the Rangers.
@Aic1944: The men of the "greatest generation" are leaving us every single say... their time on earth is drawing to a close. My late father was a veteran of WWII, and my mother survived the Nazi occupaton of her homeland as a teenager. Her family was in the resistance. I know what you mean about feeling lost and let down when Winters died; I felt the same way - he was in my personal pantheon of great Americans and heroes. We use the term "hero" far too easily - but he was the real deal.
But wouldn´t the best tribute we could give him and all others be to "just get along".
It was intolerance that gave theese men hell in the first place.
It will be hard, it will be extreamly unsatesfying and it will always be hate between people..but isn´t compromising better than war or any kind of conflict.
We might still be pissed of and scared of other ideals, but atleast we wouldn´t kill eachother....
What would U choose. what would the veterans choose
@simonswesea: Simon, it is naive to say 'Why can't we get along"... that isn't the history of humanity. Man's inhumanity to man is the rule, not the exception... which is why any nation that wishes to remain free needs men like Winters, who are willing to risk everything so that others may be safe. You wrote, "but isn´t compromising better than war or any kind of conflict?" People should try to solve problems peacefully, but some opponents cannot be bargained with. Islamic jihad comes to mind.
Winters got his wish, mostly, of a war ending with no blood having been shed in the Cold War.
President Truman launched it and President G.H.W. Bush finished it, with every president in between keeping up the effort. It was won with courage and patience.
A few days ago I just felt like watching the band of brothers because I hadn't seen it in a while. Then I started to wonder if major Winters still lives and found out from the Internet that he just died a week ago in a honorable age. It's strange how I just happened to feel like watching the show almost at the same time. RIP
@JMKenobi2007 yeah but unfortunatly he couldn't because they are only given to one man in a division and in the 101st Lt. Col. Robert G. Cole who led a bayonet charge on D-Day

He is, the greatest man who ever walked this planet.
I have so, so SO much respect for him, everything he stood for, everything he did.
He was so humble, honest, full of courage and honor.
I admire you so much, I hope there is a heaven and that you are there at peace right now.
I love you Dick Winters, thank you!
