I don't know if it's mentioned as I haven't read through the comments, but the proper way to play this is to drop the low E (6th string) to a D. The rest of Ed's tunings are usually a half step (or so) down.. except for Eruption. Eruption was probably done with Ed's typical half-step drop, but most folks believe it was sped up a bit in the studio. Anyone who has ever spent any time recording can hear the difference. It's a good trick and it takes nothing from the artist. "Effects" are cool...lol
Thats the most souless version, everything s programed and pissed off.How do you do that to mean streat. How do you make it worse. Why would Ed need A Body double, with a wedding band.
Hey man, thanks for posting this.. I'm doing an acoustic cover of this song and this has helped tremendously! And you jam on that guitar dude, awesome technique.
Wow, awesome job! One of my favorite VH tunes. You really spent a lot of time and effort learning all the details. Also, love the transitions between guitar tracks. I know it's hard sometimes to choose whether to play the lead or rhythm track, but your performance flowed very well. If I were in a club watching this, I'd have my lighter held high, and I'd be screamin'! Thanks for posting! BTW, love the Kramer!
Wow, very impressed...Great cover! Excellent! Question: What tuning does Eddie use for this tune? I never tried playing it... Thanks! Anyway, great playing!
@laney50w It's Drop-D tuning, but with each string lowered a half-step. Db, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb. Van Halen always had their guitars tuned down a semitone.
@ifutureman Thanks a bunch...That's kinda what I figured. I don't really play a lot of their tunes, but figured it was prob Drop D, or something. Anyway, great playing!
I can play guitar this good, I just don't want to.
(kidding) Very impressive, your technique is impecca-beccable, virtuostic, well done, sir, well done. Do you have any of your own compositions uploaded? Guide me to them. And keep on rockin'.
Dude you should send Ed your rig settings. The last time I saw him all he did was bitch to his tech about not getting his sound. If he was looking for the brown sound he found it 'cause it sounded like seee-it.
Eddie can't even play it this well! Altho he is stinking drunk most of the time nowadays. What a waste. I used to idolize the guy but he's worn out his overalls.
@Picachone I talked to a friend of his in Cali and actually he's been clean and sober since some time in 2007. He practices about 6 hours a day with the band. The new album should be sweet! Been waiting a long time man...
@Craigman65 - Yeah, I was in a negative space when I made those comments. Thinking about the old days when life was simple and Van Halen rocked. Good to hear EVH is cleaning up... I was pretty sure we'd be reading his obituary by now.
@Picachone when you've achieved what he has I guess one can only wonder what leads to that. He captured what most guitarists can never achieve. His own sound... I still love listening to the old stuff though.
Nicely done...A very underrated song. Lots of goodness throughout the song that is easily missed. Love playing it too. Van Halen rocks...(yes, I am 51 and can't let my youth go, cause its to muck fun to rock!)
That was totally bad ass. I may not get to my own guitar tonite, cause I'll be watching the rest of your VH video's. I've always liked this song very well, might be my most favorite of ed's work(but then again, every thing he does kicks major ass). Killer job
@Glennyladd497 Actually I'm surprised how many guys your age do like old VH. I was 15 when this song came out. We used to have to watch headbangers ball on MTV after midnight Saturday and just wait for it. Thank GOD for YT.
@Glennyladd497 Yeah! I'm 17 and VH is by far my favorite band too. I think our generation is going to bring back this music real soon. There's Airbourne, Halestorm, The Darkness(I wish they'd get back together), Buckcherry, and several hair metal bands in Sweden. Can't wait for the new Van Halen album. Their producer just announced it.
Craigman, You are AWESOME! I play guitar (at least, I try to). I've taught myself how to play and been playing for about 10 years. Question: how long did it take you to learn this tune?
Craig ... I also think that Eddie's best work is on this album and apparently I am your age. Used to love to plop this on the turn table and crank it as loud as that shitty Sound Design amplifier would go. Pretty damned sure you did the same thing.
Very nice my friend! I'd recommend holding the pick with your thumb and middle finger though. That'll leave your index finger free when you want to tap.
-nice job, needed to see some parts of this riff (helped a lot) (sometimes it's hard to see Ed playing certain parts. The written tabs are broken some of the time....keep up the good work
God, what I wouldn't give to have one of those old Kramers. This live in Oakland video is what turned me on to Van Halen back in 82 when I was 12!! Thanks for sharing!!
You do your right hand hammer ons with your index finger just like Eddie..I see so many guys hammer on with their middle finger, even guys in VH tribute bands..it's nice to see it done the correct VH way!
I believe this is my favorite ending to any VH song. I love the whole song, but find myself always waiting for the last minute of the it. I can't for the life of me figure out why HAIL didn't get a lot of airplay...at least where I lived.
