you have not been good in history. The Scots (as well as Britains, Japanese, Australish, all left drivers) are driving on the right site. Study history books again about the medieval age referring to defending of Ladies by knights. The Ladies have been on the left side, the knight had the sword in the right hand for saving the Lady. The fight had been fought from the left to the right. Bec. of that all continent. europeans r driving on the wrong side.
@danonutube1 There were hardly any Catholics in Scotland in the 17th and 18thC. Small pockets on the mainland, some of Clad Donald, and several smaller island clans. Approximations have put the Catholic population of Scotland at that time at anywhere from about 2% - 5%. Probably nearer the 2%. Just because Jacobites from Ireland and England tended to be Catholic it doesn't mean Scotland was the same. Different histories! Religious conflict in 17thC Scotland was presbyterian v episcopalian.
@cloneoffred you are right in that there was Scotsmen fighting on both sides the highlanders were predominantly catholic and fought for the house of Stewart whilst the lowlanders who were predominantly catholic helped the English fight for the house of hangover like hefferman said
@danonutube1 Actually there were Highlanders, Lowlanders and English on both sides in the various Jacobite Risings though by the 45 the English contingent had reduced to a trickle. The Jacobite army only entered England though because the prince had promised them that the English would rise in support! The Pretenders were Catholic but the bulk of the Scots (and bulk of the Highlanders) in the Jacobite Army were Protestant. They were mostly non-juring Episcopalians - that is Scottish Anglicans.
The four story tower house featured in the clip is Castle Stalker on Loch Laich, off of Loch Linnhe near the west coast of Scottland. It is nowhere near Loch Lomond.
It was in the films Monti Python and the Holy Grail, Highlander, and Endgame.
wish there were more parts to this..part 2 and 3 etc etc, but im very glad ye put this up here, suppose its just one of those days i miss home very much..thanks a ton for it
@cloneoffred No they mean the Jacobites fighting for the rightful King of Scottland against the forces of a murderous German King forced on them by knife point. The Butcher Cumberland was fighting for the house of Hanover, while the men of Scotland fought for Bonnie Prince Charles and Scotland.
I hope this history lesson helps you understand what happened better.
Brian Cox is awesome. His voice just flows with credibility, whether playing a reckless CIA officer in the Bourne series, or narrating a Scottish myth documentary. Great post for a great lyric tale.
I was on the Bonnie Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond about five months ago, and it was one of the most impressive scenes I've witnessed. And I'm from the Colorado Rocky Mountains, so I've seen plenty of awesome mountain lakes.
I plan to return, and hike the West Highland Way. Good times.
@fishman017 I am from Colorado, live in Co. Springs. My lifelong dream is to walk along the banks of Loch Lomond and the west coast around Malliag-great beach scenery (think of the movie "Local Hero"-my fav). What a thrill it must be to know what it's like. I hope you make it back one day :)
Back to scotland and to take the low road means to take the road through the graves, through the sand and soil. The low road is where your soul is trekking back to Scotland.
Now I don't know if that is true but that is what I was told.
Okay ... So I don't know but that could be true, but here's the version I was told.
A man was captured and trialed for murder in England, and his girlfriend went there and pleaded for him to be sent free. The English refused and gave him the death sentence but before the day came to kill him he wrote a song and while he was on the gallows to be killed his girlfriend was there but couldn't watch, but she heard him singing Loch Lomond.
To take the high road means to take the normal road- con
well they only started tellin it, one was to be be pardoned back to tell the story [the high road] an the other hanged, when you die you join the sihe an travel the low road back home if you have unfinished business and the clan [like Donnachaie]
Me and my partner at the time went along to see this when Drumkinnon Tower first opened (we just lived up the road) It was amazing to see it on the Imax screen, DVD's where available and so was the soundtrack, Bought the soundtrack on the day but as we did not buy the DVD that day had to buy it from America, took a few weeks to arrive!
This was a very interesting story behind the music and lyrics. Sometimes the story is as compelling as the music itself. Thanks for posting this portion......
@LadyShesu . This is a clip of a short film made to commemorate the opening of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National park. It played in the Imax cinema that was in the visitors center near Balloch. This is now an aquarium. You might get a DVD from there.

The "low road", in Scotland, was a term often applied to the route to a communities graveyard. In the some areas you will also find it called the "crow road". The terms may have come from the "Drover" tradition, where cattle and sheep were moved along the "high roads" to avoid low lying wet ground and the risk of theft. The "low road" became associated with death and the passage of the soul.

I would contact Loch Lomond Shores, Balloch, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland to enquire about these DVDs/CDs. The complex is now an aquarium and no longer shows this.

I love it when they put that soundtrack when going down the Loch though, that in itself does it justice.

Sorry going on from that, its arguably the largest in Europe, though I havent done any reading on this for well over a year, but I cant put it into words what it means.
I mean its probably Runrigs version of the song itself that got me into it, though I do love the proper version itself, the original folk song, I think thats lovely aswell.
Its just incredible thats all I can say, both are lovely places though Drumnadrochit (excuse spelling) where Loch Ness is.
oh my god, am i in this film, i'm not in any of the scenes shown here but i play a guy setting up the gig for the girls.
I had two scenes first pushing the equipment into the building as the girls arrive and second putting up a banner then coming down ladders, lol i did have a close up shot but it was cut from the film!!
i am a HUGE fan of Scotland...i live in a place known as Scotland USA...we have the Highland Festival every year and i just can't get enough!! i absolutly love Loch Lomond...the song...everything behind it...everything!! it's actually the first song i learned to play on my violin! lol
ancient Pictish belief that ghosts of slain who died far from home travelled under the earth to haunt the place dearest in memory. The soldier was of Glen Endrick, on the sth-east of Loch Lomond & was taken into custody in England with a friend because of their support for Bonnie Prince Charlie. The friend was released but MacGregor was sentenced to hang. Hence, told his friend to take the high road back to Scotland and he would take the low road, below ground. The original words were Gaelic.
Most people who have heard it believe it was a story of a soldier going off to war and believing he would not come back alive. What most people do not realize is that it was actually composed by a condemned MacGregor, under sentence of death in Carlisle Castle, in 1746.
i am a scottish boy and i have a little sister and somedaay she will be at the ryole varity singing that song she wants it played at her funarul but i shold''nt
I love everything about Scotland. I am American, but my great grandfather was Scottish. I just love everything and go to lots of Scottish sites online. I try to look for Scottish folk to become friends with. I have loads of videos and songs abotu Scotland. I am nuts about it. i am going there in 2010.
Anyone who is interested in this, you can buy it off Amazon, can't wait to get it, I was one of the lucky ones to see this at Lomond Shores before they decided to make it into an aquarium.
You really need to be in this place to see how breathtaking it is. Live in Ayrshire now, not the same.
i saw this movie in the museum at loch lomond. it is so beautiful and i searched for it everywhere. i was so happy when i found this but it's really sad that the end is missing!
The description is somewhat unconfirmed. No one knows how the song came about although yes, it was from a Scots soldier. I was told the story that the younger brother of another Scots soldier had decided to be executed instead of his sibling so that he could go back and be with his wife, while the younger one knew that he would never see his girlfriend in the flesh again.
But there's other stories which people have heard so it's origins will never be known.
@runa007able1 they re singing correctly and if you dont know it you wee german dick in Scotland you drive on the left side of the road !!!!!

Before the last ice age this was a sea loch, now only a narrow strip of land seperates the loch from the sea, making it land locked fresh water.
The words of this song were said to have been written on the walls of a Carlisle prison cell by a Jacobite prisoner in 1745.

My ancestors were Jacobites living eventually on the Isle of sky--that is my GGGrandfather did, but I
suspect he was born on the wrong side of the blanket.

oh my god, am i in this film, i'm not in any of the scenes shown here but i play a guy setting up the gig for the girls.
I had two scenes first pushing the equipment into the building as the girls arrive and second putting up a banner then coming down ladders, lol i did have a close up shot but it was cut from the film!!
Will need to see if i can get hold of this
Thanks for posting

ancient Pictish belief that ghosts of slain who died far from home travelled under the earth to haunt the place dearest in memory.

Live in Ayrshire now, not the same.

the soldier was captured and was awaiting execution and he wrote the song about how he wanted to see his family and about the beauty of loch lomond
