Binecuvantata esti Romanie,ca ai dat lumii un dirijor unic, celest(Celi ! ),magnific...,un artist al Universului necuprins!.Dumnezeu sa-l odihneasca in gradina Raiului!
he is gipsy ...he is very gipsy like many others romanian artists ...if he wasnt a very good conductor and he was making some non-sense music then everyone from romania could say ,yesss he is a gipsy
who cares in THIS CASE MASTER's origin ? CELIBIDACHE is GENIUS ! HE is in level of Universe,Real Master, and every civilized nation can count HIM as his PART...( If they are far from cheap & disgusting filling... calls envy...) !
People are getting offended here because Gypsies are an insular ethnic group with their own language and culture. They are not Romanians, Hungarians, and so forth. They don't want to be anything other than what they are.
It's weird to call someone like Celibidache "part Gypsy" in the same way that it would have been weird to call Copland "part American Indian."
Obviously Barenboim just meant Gypsy in the Romantic sense, but it was something of a faux pas.
I'm Italian, and, if by chance anyone, describing Toscanini, had quoted "his Neapolitan charachter" I would haven't felt offended. Why don't we leave these small things like national pride to small people, and appreciate the not correct but inspired commentary by Barenboim? Yes, gipsy, romanian, white, black, yellow or striped, anyway Celibidache was one of the most amazing musicians of the last century!
definetely wrong you are. gypsy like in the good way.. like passionate.. doh, i think it's been already said in these comments for thousand times, why don't you check them again ?
I found this clip a revelation. Granted I know that Celibidache may be better suited to some music than others, but hearing this short excerpt from one of his Dvorak New World performances I feel so moved to want to see this performance released on CD one day.
What does the guy in the video mean by "Gypsy personality"? How is "Gypsy personality" defined? I hope that he doesn't mean that, because Celibidache was from Romania, he must be a Gypsy (Rroma).
You have a very idealized, romanticized image of what "gypsy personality" is (if there is something like this). It's offensive for Romanians to be described, even with good intensions, as gypsies (Rroma). You could say that Celibidache was an original, a perfectionist, even a narcissist. More appropriate.

But I bet you would feel offended if he were described as part German, which is the correct analogy.

"Part gypsy"?
Ignorant idiot. Romanians are white, gypsies are a minority, like blacks in the US.

I guess what he means is the spirit of a gipsy, in the sense of never feeling home and keeping searching all your life, you know?
