Done some test on my iPhone 3G and have been able to duplicate many of the Reception/Transmission issues that are found on the iPhone 4. When holding my iPhone 3G, the phone loses 2 to 4 bars and Reception/Transmission speeds are dramatically reduced (I used the SpeedTest app). Maybe we should be testing other iPhone models, as well as Droid phones to get a better perspective on this issue.
The best of it is that Nokia patented a similar antenna design back in 2001 (and are now in a legal argument with Apple about it). The releases a phone in 2002 that had this design, it had the same reception issues and they stopped using the design because they realized it was flawed. 8 years later Apple make the same mistake, i wonder will they be smart and ditch the design or will they go for the normal stubborn approach.
@vandal2k6 - like I said before in my earlier comments the issue is related to software and no need to worry cause it will be resolved with an update. There is a confirmed report that a 4.0.1 update will be released on Monday to address the issue. The fix is expected to address a issue in iOS 4 related to radio frequency calibration of the baseband to occur when switching frequencies; because the lag is allegedly not calibrated correctly, it results in reporting no service
hopefully this has happened to all them sad twats that camped outside the apple stores for days to get one, and hopefully they all caught A.I.D.S while doing so.
Apple should include with, and give all current iPhone 4 owners a free Bumper to go around the outside of the phone. That's the least they could do considering this problem.
the phones these days are such a low wattage they barely keep signals indoors anymore
you used to be able to buy a 3 watt cell phone
now you get a 3 milli-watt cell
it's not software it's hardware
low watts equals bad signals
now the companies are boosting towers and building repeaters because it is cheaper for them........doesn't help the guy on a country road get help when he needs it though
ahhh hahahahahahha ahhhhhhhhhhh hhahahaha, obviously went through the worst testing methods ever!!! all those dumb ass people who stood in line for hours for it, losers!!
Rumours of other phones including Nexus One suffering from the same issue are false BTW, I've videoed mine, video in my youtube list. Also other videos show calls being dropped and data being dropped, so it's not just a strength indicator issue.
This is a hardware problem. Can not be fixed without redesign the phone,so Steve find the "smart" solution: cheap ruber bumpers for this "out of this planet" phone. " Hey,Steve we are not stupid. Give us the money back.We dont have to pay for you to experiment new phones.

Jobs has just said that people "shouldn't hold the phone that way". Brilliant, he's a genius. Now I know why he's where he is, he just tells people to fuck off. He's an hero. Oh and also by saying this he's admitted it's an HARDWARE fault and not just a bug. Fanbois gonna cry. HTC ALL THE WAY BABY!
you should know by now ppl dont need to put the phone on their ear to use it hence why we have bluetooth steve jobs dont want you to put your "apple juice" on his product.
I received my iPhone 4 at 1:30 today. I tried to replicate this problem and could not. I held it as shown in this video, but I still have full service in Washington, DC. My bars do not drop AT ALL. I understand that some replicate the problem by squeezing the phone. BUT who the hell squeezes a cell phone with a death grip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My iPhone works fine, and reception is great. The only problem I had was not receiving 3G service. I contacted AT&T and did a soft reset. PROBLEM FIXED!
Hey guys, Steve Jobs here to fix the problem. I seem to be having connection issues so , hold on..... thanks for your patience.... be with you in a minute.....

people need to so their research before jumping to conclusions. There is nothing wrong with the phone itself and Apple stated that the issue is simply related to a bug in the way the bars are lined up.That is why the call was is not lost during a phone call.Apple, acknowledged this bug and a simple update will resolve this.
@mannypeligroso i already kno that. I read that article a week ago when it was posted. Apple never publicy said anything and most people dont know the phone has this issue...
@mannypeligroso Ah, so that is why Jobs has just said "Don't hold the phone that way" rather than "it's just a bug, nothing wrong"? YOU need to do some research my friend.
@mannypeligroso Hey Manny thanks for letting us know. I'll wait until the fix this issue to get the phone. I was about to order it and seeing all the reviews scared me quite a bit, lol.
Listen buddy, you damn right I can read. Some people are saying that it's a software issue and others are saying that it's a hardware issue. Regardless of the situation, this is a big issue and it sucks that people who just purchased the iPhone have to go through this.
that's a definite problem. but in many cases, while talking on the phone, we usually don't hold it like that. so, there must be a reception problem but it won't be serious that much when using it, i think.
One guy managed to fix it by using a case. I guess there seems to be a contact issue that seems to kill the reception. Strange that Apple didn't catch this.
i saw this coming, the antenna band on the outside of the phone, if it is really an antenna, would transfer the waves that are hitting you, into the phone (humans are conductive to radio waves) your body is an interfering antenna.

its the antenna cause its around the phone now Its gotta be just like touching a TV antenna sometimes it helps and sometimes it hurts the signal i dont think it can be fixed with an update

Steve: So?
Developers: We were just wondering how you wanted to address the issue.
Steve: Tell those dumb shits to not hold it that way.
Developers: What if they do hold it that way.
Steve: I dunno, make up a cover story or some shit. Just don't let them know we fuked up.
Developers: How about we tell them that the signal strength has been wrong since the first iPhone.
Steve: Perfect, they'll believe that.
