I hope they release Curse of Monkey Island:Special Edition this year.I've had so much fun with the first two games on my PS3.I had not played them since I was a kid,and I wouldn't want to stop at LeChuck's revenge.

this is awful, truly awful. it looks like a cheap kids cartoon. if the wanted to go 3d, they should have gone realistic 3d, this has put me right off it which is a shame. i love the curse of monkey islands rich detail, its hilarious animations and vivid colour, so the hell what if it was in 2D?? it was great like that, thats what all the fans started on, why change a winning formula? this look cheap, its characters are non expressive slow moving. these graphics are circa 1994?! i will not buy

Just bought it for PS2, playing it on PCSX2 and i have to say it's very playable with a gamepad. Not to mention the high resolution (playing in 1920x1080) and antialiasing you can use with pcsx2. The FMVs are played in Fullscreen too, not in native resolution in the left corner of your screen as when you're using this crappy resolution patch available for pc. God, i hate the PC-version now.
I never bought this game, even if I LOVE "The Curse of...". I didn't think that it would be good in 3D and the pictures on the back of the cover looked... boring. I saved my money for the upcoming Nintendo GameCube instead.
@ThrowntoReality You don't have to regret it. You could always watch the playthroughs here on youtube. It'd certainly be better than wasting your money on this not so good sequel =)
I don't you guys are giving this game enough credit. I used to play it when I was way younger and I loved it. I've recently purchased it again so I can play :D and I might not enjoy it as much.. But I probably will because of it's mixture of engaging genres :)
Sure, we all have the tendency to compare games to there previous ones.. But we should just believe it to be individual etc. It's not like they didn't try with this game, it's pretty impressive overall.

you all say they ruined the series by getting rid of 2d, but you're forgetting that the graphics on the first two monkey island games was poor, it was only the 3rd that was in 2d, and Monkey Island 4 was created at a time when the adventure game genre was dying, so churning out another 2d point + click game wouldn't have helped the series at all. If you didnt like the game because of the graphics, then you're completely forgetting what monkey island is about, and that is great comical writing.
i agree, about the industry losing intrest, but i also agree with whoever your arguing with. the game has lost some of the monkey island traits, but if it were made in 2d there may not have been a monkey island 4. in my opinion, 'the curse of monkey island' was the best in the series so far, combining the classic 2d interface with non-dos graphics, but in number 4 the voodoo lady talks about a 5 part contract she has signed with lucas arts.
I don't think I laughed as much in this game. MI3 was the greatest ever.
The 3D really threw me off, I didn't get the same feel of everyone as I did in MI3. The controls were very annoying and countless times, timed puzzles had to be done more than once because of those controls. I did like the "run" option; it was faster and because of that I rarely used the "walk" option.
If they make a MI5 I sure hope it goes back to 2D and is funnier, better puzzles, etc.
Never completed this. Due to having to restart the game twice due to an inventory glitch (the inventory items stuck on the screen couldn't get rid of them, also I still had the 'pistol' in my inventory for no reason). Also it isn't fun and not nearly as good as Monkey Island 3.
Monkey Island was only ever great when it used hand drawn 2D Pixel Art and no rendered 3D shit! And the chip generated music made it even nicer :) Also the voice of Guybrush just sounds far too scripted and pretty boy B grade.. I would much rather no voice over at all and just imagine how i would want him to sound and that includes all the characters in the game. There are just SOME games that should be 3D and some that should NOT, and that stands for Monkey Island.
It was a good game but the control scheme and graphics were wrong for a Monkey Island game. They should have kept them more like in The Curse of Monkey Island.

I'm 14, and I still think that while Escape from Monkey Island sucks, the rest of the games rocked. I don't why some people do assume it is to with age (as many other people have said this, apart from you).
I hated the visual style, it was not nearly as funny as the other games, it is still had the annoying control and interface issues Grim Fandango had (come on, GF was made 2 years before this. Surely they had time to iron out the engine). The stories and puzzles were also pretty lame.
I think the art style looks really plastic. It's as if the entire world and characters are toys. I think Curse of Monkey Island is definately the best looking the series.
at somepoint in the future, some badass monkey island true fan with lots of hard cash on his hand will buy the rights to the game, and then just give them to ron gilbert. Then we will have the true Monkey Island 3 and 4 and maby 5, in good old 2D.
THis game is kinda a disappointment. But it could have been worse, just look at Simon the sorcerer 3D!
All games that went 3D at this time was kinda disappointing, but at least they made a fourth! Not as good as the previous, but I prefer to have this to not having continioued the series at all.
This is not a bad game, but compared to the others it's an insult. The quality of graphics is irrelevant but the storyline, characters, constantly self-referential writing, hackneyed jokes, and incredibly juvenile feeling of the whole game, aren't.

It doesn't beat the other Monkey Islands but it's still brilliant and has lots of good humor.

Agreed, Monkey Kombat was the worst idea ever, who put that in and everytime you played it the movesets would change so anything you'd written wouldn't work.
They made it easier on the PS2 version apparently with a menu that shows you how each move is performed.
It's interesting how a comment on the 2nd page got -6 for saying "This is the WORST Monkey Island EVER, newbies" however unpaidintern said essentially the same thing and got +6...???
I haven't played it yet and am still deciding if I want to get it, so I can't say much. The 3D is a put off for me though, especially when it is an earlier 3D if you know what I mean.
All I'm gonna say is that the first two were pretty hard to live up to. (those are the only two that I have played and beaten, which is why 3 is not listed)
Also, music deserves mentioning when it comes to reviewing... but you're right about it not being the point of the game.
-These 3 games are incredible masterpieces. MI2 especially but every single one of them is top notch. Monkey Island IV: not even worth mentioning. what an enormous deception!

I hated the animation on this one. I think Monkey Island 3 was best animated and I really wish the 5th (if will ever come out) will be fairly similar to that.

I would like to play every game in 3D...
...except Monkey Island.
The 2D graphics is the heart of MI.
The creators has got to understand that just because 3D is the "newest" gamegraphic, it doesn't have to be the perfect for every game.
And you cannot move Guybrush with your keyboard, you've got to make him do things by clicking the good ol'
"Pick up" "Push" "Look at" "Give" "Use" etc.
I'm sure Monkey Island 4 is a great game, but it will never be the old Monkey Island I played.

at somepoint in the future, some badass monkey island true fan with lots of hard cash on his hand will buy the rights to the game, and then just give them to ron gilbert. Then we will have the true Monkey Island 3 and 4 and maby 5, in good old 2D.

THis game is kinda a disappointment. But it could have been worse, just look at Simon the sorcerer 3D!
All games that went 3D at this time was kinda disappointing, but at least they made a fourth! Not as good as the previous, but I prefer to have this to not having continioued the series at all.

This is not a bad game, but compared to the others it's an insult. The quality of graphics is irrelevant but the storyline, characters, constantly self-referential writing, hackneyed jokes, and incredibly juvenile feeling of the whole game, aren't.

Thats what I thought when I first got it, and it sat on my shelve for a week until i decided to play it. However I used a walkthrough guide becuase it does get difficult especially witht eh puzzles... Long live ESCAPE FROM MONY ISLAND

I did like the 1st 2 better.altho true now graphic-wise it's obsolete.The only thing i didnt like about all the others after the 2nd one is that they make everything look so funny. I liked the first two cos they looked kool...funny was just the way characters acted etc. Now Guybrush looks like an idiot...hate that.

I think the game could've used a bit of polish but overall it's very enjoyable game. Much easier than the earlier games though.
I think the earlier games could've been bit easier but not THIS easy. Yet it was enjoyable and good game. Graphics were sometimes bit low quality but overall pleasant.
It doesn't beat the other Monkey Islands but it's still brilliant and has lots of good humor.
Good game overall and come on the 3d graphics weren't THAT bad.

Agreed, Monkey Kombat was the worst idea ever, who put that in and everytime you played it the movesets would change so anything you'd written wouldn't work.
They made it easier on the PS2 version apparently with a menu that shows you how each move is performed.

I haven't played it yet and am still deciding if I want to get it, so I can't say much. The 3D is a put off for me though, especially when it is an earlier 3D if you know what I mean.

I'm willing to compromise.
It's the least shiniest member of a collection of diamonds.
It retains the wit, story, and appeal of the series, but it's just lacking a charm in 3D.
How I stack them
1) The Curse of Monkey Island
2) LeChuck's Revenge
3) Secret of Monkey Island
4) Escape from Monkey Island
The fourth one is the poorest of the series, but remains a great game in its own right.

All I'm gonna say is that the first two were pretty hard to live up to. (those are the only two that I have played and beaten, which is why 3 is not listed)
Also, music deserves mentioning when it comes to reviewing... but you're right about it not being the point of the game.

-These 3 games are incredible masterpieces. MI2 especially but every single one of them is top notch. Monkey Island IV: not even worth mentioning. what an enormous deception!
