I Almost forgot to say that Rick is one of the most TIMELESS vocalist I've ever witnessed. His voice has not faltered one bit over the years. Amazing talent
In response to those who say Danny rips Rick ... first of all I love both these guitarists and they are both fantastic. And to Danny's credit, he is playing his all parts almost note for note, something Rick chooses not to do obviously. But where Rick's solo starts at 0:41 is where originally Rick shreds a flurry of octaves and ripping lines on the original album. Definitely would have been cool to hear him solo verbatim...
@naltap No doubt they both are grt. Saw RD do 10min solo while Derr band left stage in Dayton'76 Unbelievable! 20K fans standing mesmerized for 10 mins by one of the best soloists I've seen. Bluesy rhythmic, melodic solo not just staccato speed all over the joint like lots others do. All with the smallest hands/shortest fingers of all the great ones I've seen. Yes, with DJ one of the slickest axe tandems around.
I did Acid One time in 1978... and That night listened to "Derringer" 8-Track all F--king night while I lay there in my bed... It played over and over as I had trouble sleeping but enjoyed the Album as it was permanently embeded in my brain...lol
@JIMSMID PS I still have that 8- F__king track. and my 8-F__king track player!!! I lived with my Big Sis that Summer right Downtown 36th & Dodge streets in Omaha....We were so F__kin Cool then
@JIMSMID good to know... i did your mother one time in 1978.....i should let ya know that i was trippin when you were concieved....it's all good, my son..
ZgZg, DJ couldn't rip RDs ass on lead or rhythm on his worst day. Saying RD played no lead shows you never saw band live. In the fiery dueling leads, did DJ play both?
SwEvil both played lots of leads, can easily hear the parts because of the diff in style & tone.
DJ played a LP, RD played Strat or Rich during those 76-78 days. The diff is so clear you stating that RD played no lead shows you either have an axe(Not musical)to grind, or you just don't know what you're talking about.
I love Danny Johnson's solos! His style is so distinctive, with a kind of dissonance, for lack of a better term. He really builds nice tension into his playing. I always presumed these amazing solos from Derringer and Sweet Evil were Rick playing lead guitar. I see now that much of that style I was really picking up on was Danny Johnson. The guy is so under rated it's criminal. Now, lemme just watch that again. Sure would like a better view of his finger positions.
amazing show. they went into the lobby to sign autographs. but as great as rick derringer is, i walked right by him to see vinny appice whos my favorite drummer. i went up to him and i had my heaven and hell shirt on when i saw them live. he noticed it and i told him he was my favorite drummer. he said "im your favorite drummer?" and i was like yea. and he goes to kenny aaronson and danny johnson "this kid is 12 and im his favorite drummer of all time!" it was the greatest day ever
To bad for rick..Danny Johnson was rippin Ricks ass like he always does...hes now with Steppenwolf.Derringer played no lead at all it was all Danny Johnson
Yeah it is Kenny. Kenny is such a good player. If you listen to the records he did with Derringer, his playing is tasty and fat sounding. When I first started playing bass I discovered these records and learned every song on them. I think it made me a better bass player faster because the lines weren't easy.
yeah...i was at crazy donkey for their 2nd show...what an all star line-up....i was spending most of the show watching vinny appice on drums....danny johnson was great also as stated....they all were great they were happy to sign ricks setlist for my son who also went
Always wondered who was taking the solos on the 2 Derringer LP's with Danny Johnson. Great songs! Sweet Evil LP one of my favorites! I teach DrivingSideways to my bass students.
Totally rippin! This band was so good and overlooked. Anyone got footage of Roll with Me? They did an awesome version of that tune with added lead exchange at the end.
I was at this show. They were all great, and were cool enough to sign autographs and take pictures in the lobby after the show. They don't make em like this anymore.
The mutual understanding between Rick and Danny was the point. Not just trading licks.
