I don't know or care if you're a lesbian, k.d. I love you. I love your voice. I love how your voice breaks on "hallelujah" and then gets soft and vibrato like an aria again. Thank you for sharing the pain and joy.
This singer and her rendition of this song rips at my heart and I will never tire of listening to her voice. I just love her so much. She is a beautiful human being, that's all that matters. Hope she is happy and enjoying her life.
Absolutely beautiful. Her voice is so beautiful and how she sings it ahhhh!. All this talk about sublimely beautiful piece of poetic refrain. superb and performed as near to perfection as is humanly possible I so agree with.
I've heard this song done many times, but when K D sings it Man! Hers is the most expressive, dancing in and out of soft and hard with great precision and skill. Some people are just blessed to touch. Amazing.
Unbelievably incredible. Love it more each time I hear it. This is absolutely the best version of this beautiful song. What a talent she has......her voice is like a musical instrument from God.
Who are the people who say not enough emotion, seriously. Most covered song in history and kd lang DOES show the most emotion. Doesn't get any better.
I think k.d. is very underrated.... She even said in an interview that she's a one hit wonder (Constant Craving, 1992) -- but yet, she has put out a retrospective CD set entitled Recollection, which features 20 tracks and 2 newly recorded songs...
You all need to stop contradicting and judging k.d. lang because she has masculine features...It does not matter... you are all just idiots if you think that this is unnatural! Listen to her voice and in fact, her name is kathryn dawn (kd) lang.....
@Pabberzzz, of course, taste in music is very subjective, but the fact that k.d. lang was chosen to sing this haunting song TO Leonard Cohen as he was being inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, says that people more knowledgeable then you or I made that choice. @Harlzaaa, that "dude" is the man who wrote the song, Leonard Cohen, and given that he was bowing to k.d., and kissing her hands tells a different story.
I love you KD Lang! Cheers from Nova Scotia ~ Absolutely Divine! And with Leonard Cohen there just could not get better! I think I would be levitating!
@MrTcork k.d Lang is a woman and is a lesbian so if you have something against that please keep it to yourself and have some respect for a true artist.

@MrTcork what an ignorant remark, did you arrive at this site to listen to music? This version of this song is one of the most moving pieces ever, and you decide to reduce your experience to your inability to find something positive to say.

One of the last songs my mom and I shared. My son and she had worked out the arpeggios on his guitar and he played and sang it for her while she was in acoma. I am sure it was one of her most treasured gifts. Thank Leonard and K D for the magic
Best version ever <3 . I always comment on videos, saying "how could you dislike this?!" but disliking this video has just crossed the line. You four people must have mistaken the dislike button for "Dis, I Like"
@SuCkMyBaLLsBiTch1000 You are right, and that did occur to me. Just the same, the 'thank you" was sincere. More precisely, I was pleased no one had anything ugly along that line to say. Hopefully, neither did I
@IDreamofWW She is so good, and yet as you say, not known/rated as highly as she should be. The subtle delivery, never "too much", and never not enough--just right, you can tell she believes the words, and then delivers them. Another singer you might like is Tina Arena, you can find her singing "Don't Cry for me Argentina" and although she might not be quite as good, she too comes across as so genuine, and her facial expressions, the authenticity she offers is better than any other I've seen
@SuCkMyBaLLsBiTch1000 Yes of course and I love any recommendation of the same, which was why I mentioned Tina Arena and "Don't Cry for me Argentina", her face and hand motions, and her delivery spell binding. I did see by the way, the video you recommended, and I liked the way Raphael imitated the horn part so well, as well as his delivery. My own favorite Spanish song is by Rocio Durcal "Como han pasado los anos", also guarantee you will adore, Esther Ofarim "the three song",
She"s just soooo happy now I think. She earned the right to say if you don't like me that's just too damned bad. I won't sell out, I'll do it my way LOL
I'm sitting here with goose bumps, tears running down my face, and I'm smiling. Did you guys notice how far she drops the mic when she's really hitting a note with strength? She has to do that or else she'd blow everybody out of the water. What an amazing performance! What an amazing woman!
when kd did this at UB Buffalo every body in the place buzzed with goosebumps...then at the end some guys shouts,
"you made the hair on my chest stand on end!" He spoke for everyone - in that place and anywhere else she exhales that gorgeous siren-OM. What a wonderful thing she does with air. <3
This is beautiful but the definitive version has to be the one by Jeff Buckley. When Rufus Wainwright recorded this for the Shrek sundtrack, it ws clear that he hadlistened closely to Buckley's version. Here is a link to a live version he recorded. if youre interested, it's on the album Grace. (the only album he released before his death.)
Check out the whole song..... every verse; some verses are missing here. If every verse would have been sung here then you would know that it has religious overtones or undertones; depending on your perspective. This song is so amazing that it will say different things to different people... it just depends on who you are, your perspective on life, and what you know about God, David, and the Bible. To me it's not so much about religion but it's about Relationship with the One the writer refe
Amazing..... I so wish she could have sung every verse of this incredible song. What incredible composure to sing this song and nail it like that in front of Mr. Leonard Cohen himself. K. D. ..... you're awesome and privileged to have been able to do it. WOW!

It's the notion that there is no perfection - that this is a broken world and we live with broken hearts and broken lives but still that is no alibi for anything. @mangethegamer Just because the song mentions a religious topic does not make it religious. By your reasoning because you are mentioning religion, you are a religious person. I even quoted the man who wrote the song, I got nothing more to show you. I understand that you are an adolescent who, I hope is just trolling, because if you really cannot tell the difference than I pity you.
@Giavannanow Have been struggling with how to describe this voice and along comes someone who says it exactly how I feel it. Thank you for putting words to how I feel when I hear this wonderful woman sing this.
@Giavannanow I go further and say, anyone of the many versions of this song are all haunting. It's the melody and the lyrics that are simply breathtaking.
@Giavannanow I go further and say that all versions of this song are hauntingly beautiful. It's the melody and lyrics....Cohen, Buckley, Wainwright, Crowe, the four Norwegian men, etc. :D
Cohen’s most famous song has been covered by more than 200 artists; with 80 different verses written by Cohen. ╰⊰⊹✿ No wonder everyone wants to sing it. Even I do! ✿⊹⊱╮ Its various manifestations has an enriching power and various layers of meaning that few modern pop songs could even dream of possessing. ╰⊰⊹✿ In Awe With You! ✿⊹⊱╮
@Giavannanow I go further and say that all versions of this song are hauntingly beautiful. It's the melody and lyrics....Cohen, Buckley, Wainwright, Crowe, the four Norwegian men, etc. This song just makes me shiver....:D
@Giavannanow On Youtube she can take our breath away...can you even imagine what it was like to be in that hall that night? Must have been like a little bit of Heaven.
Leonard Cohen might have written this beautiful song, but k.d. OWNS it. I would bet even Cohen would completely agree. He is a master of words but she is a master of interpretation. I am in complete awe every time I hear this.
@brianable I actually did not know that. I can believe it though considering the number of verses he wrote. Interesting how each artist picks out only certain versions to do. Who knows, maybe it still isn't finished. He probably just keeps adding to it. Wish someone(k.d.) would do the whole thing though.
@specialfx35 Good point - and I hope it is also never finished! Wouldn't it be more interesting to hear more verses coming out of the woodwork over a period of time - of course all written by Leonard Cohen - but we will (probably in our lifetime) never hear the entire piece. I wonder if Don McLean's 'Vincent' was also really complete?... even though it is considerably longer than 'Hallelujah' ... need to know if he kept some verses hidden from view?
Leondard Cohen wrote this beautiful song and K. D. Lang owns it. This is beautiful and she shows how gracious and sincere she is at the end with her unspoken thank you to Mr. Cohen.
The best thing I have ever seen sung. When she stops you can see how happy she is with her performance of that song, on that stage, on that occasion, for and in front of that man - her performance is a thing of such elemental beauty and seeming perfection, it's hard to believe it actually happened - bravo
She's got more talent than 90% of the singers in the world added together...yet she's never, ever is anything but humble. She's a great lady...very great lady.
You could tell how moved Cohen was by her version of his song. He and his partner Anjani Thomas later referred to this version as Hallelujah's "ultimate blissful state of perfection." I really love Cale and Buckley's version of this song as well. The fact there have been so many wonderful covers shows what a great song it is.
K.D. owns this song! Thank God she shares the gift of her voice to us!

@Giavannanow I go further and say, anyone of the many versions of this song are all haunting. It's the melody and the lyrics that are simply breathtaking.

@ReasonsItrust
IF given that opportunity
I would bow in humble gratitude
to K.D.
as she did at 5:32
to the great artist Leonard Cohen!

No matter how many times I hear
K.D. sing "Hallelujah" ~ it takes my breath away.
Her almost painfully, exquisite voice
gets in all the cracks in your soul
and then soars above it all.

Showing her respect for Cohen, is just another example of her beautiful soul. You, bet she owns that song.

Leonard Cohen might have written this beautiful song, but k.d. OWNS it. I would bet even Cohen would completely agree. He is a master of words but she is a master of interpretation. I am in complete awe every time I hear this.

@specialfx35 I agree. Did you know that it took Leonard Cohen more then 5 years to write the song!
brianable 10 months ago
@brianable Its worth every minute he took....
Waltham1892 10 months ago
@brianable I actually did not know that. I can believe it though considering the number of verses he wrote. Interesting how each artist picks out only certain versions to do. Who knows, maybe it still isn't finished. He probably just keeps adding to it. Wish someone(k.d.) would do the whole thing though.
specialfx35 10 months ago
@specialfx35 Good point - and I hope it is also never finished! Wouldn't it be more interesting to hear more verses coming out of the woodwork over a period of time - of course all written by Leonard Cohen - but we will (probably in our lifetime) never hear the entire piece. I wonder if Don McLean's 'Vincent' was also really complete?... even though it is considerably longer than 'Hallelujah' ... need to know if he kept some verses hidden from view?

I was with her all the way through. Captivating!

The look on Leonard Cohen face at the end of k.d. lang's performance... PRICELESS
