The old woman who says, "She is utter trash," is referring to the woman in red. Finally, the mom in the background had had enough, steps through, and shuts her up big-time. Unfortunately, she later got arrested for assault and battery, but in my book she was a hero.

It's difficult, isn't it? I worked in an office of a small factory for years. Makes you want to throw up your hands and surrender. What worked for me was to not repeat gossip, not take sides and try to be friendly with everyone. It wasn't always successful but it brought me a little peace at work :)
