Yep you can, and you will have to do this if you try to install new, thicker pads.
PS: Don't pop the reservoir lid and try to press the piston back. I did that once, it'll work but the brake fluid will splash out the reservoir, creating a real mess lol. So yeah, go for the nipples instead, much less messy. =)

Can you loosen the bleed screw to loosen the compression on the piston for easier installation?
