Some people select their own facts to support their dogmas, not to discover any new truths. This is a continuation of the culture of contest, divert attention from ones own deficiencies by attacking any alternatives to self made doctrines. History will prove you wrong and will surprise you.
Sowell on Obama trillion $ deficits reminds me how is it not evident for us to be calling for O's"impeachment?" for O to state that it is to be expected and hence making it acceptable to experience trillion $ deficits for the next ten years disqualifies O for leadership. if it is not treasonous to be so reckless, it certainly states that O has no business in leadership in this state of crisis for the US. and if you don't believe it is a crisis do the math.
Excellent comment from Dr. Sowell: "they're being taught it is important to have views and not being taught that it is important to know what you are talking about."
That idea may be the defining element distinguishing and bifurcating our political thinking, economy and structure. Everywhere one can find "views" but little ability to substantiate or corroborate that view. This idea Sowell promulgates is very powerful. So many feel the "intensity of their belief in their view is sufficient."
"We are raising whole generations who regard facts as more or less optional".
I couldn't agree more. And this is largely a result of the leftist infiltration and domination of the media-academia complex over the last 50 years. Irrational leftists indoctrinating youth to become irrational leftists as adults. It is a vicious cycle. They accept their own belief as fact, independent of evidence. Then promulgate fallacies such as anthropogenic global warming. Reality is thrown aside.
They start early teaching kids to not think critically, by teaching them to embrace evolution without question, and that no evidence can contradict evolution.
I'm always left in awe of Sowell. I'm glad he appears to be in fantastic health because I sincerely hope he lives long enough & more to see our nation come out of this period of chaos & destruction.
@zoticus1 He advocates facts before ideology, or that ideology should be founded on facts, compared to views before facts. Sowell has also described why he supports what he does and what studies or historical pieces he is basing his stances on, which is consistant with what he is saying.
You can politicalize (and thus partisanize) anything, he is simply refering to facts instead of feelings (or feel good ideas) supporting stances
@zoticus1 Well said. what a refreshing comment to a Hoover inst video. I'm so tired of posters comments drooling over anything from Sowell or Freidman.
@DoctrinaBytes - maybe. but Sowell has some very brilliant insights. if one is looking for some penetrating philosophical inquiry into the economics of things, he can give it. some viewers drool (as i admit to being one) because if one has a substantive background in econ, it is easy to have a natural respect for Sowell's authoritative position, given his accomplishment on basic principles. and to add, for many, i suspect his stature is similar to what Kaku is for physics as an adept speaker.
@DoctrinaBytes - and I am sorry but to drool more,Tom Sowell brings dignity from the past to the present. what does that mean? he is very reflective of thoughts, ideas and common sense that many experienced with a generation from a long time ago. another way of stating it: he is not a boomer!
@zoticus1 What if there are not valid points on both sides of the spectrum? You are assuming there are. The question one must ask is is your regard on the facts driven by being partisan, OR are you partisan BECAUSE of the facts?
I love his cheerfulness in the face of all this rotten news. I think it demonstrates a key conservative attitude: government is not our anointed savior. It is not our main source of happiness. Doesn't it seem like conservatives are just generally happier than liberals?
He looks a lot younger than his age

I'm amazed by the vigor and clarity that he has at age 80. I can only hope for the same.

Its funny Sowell adores facts but his stances on many things are skewed by an ideology which he illustrates quite clearly.
To be a partisan is to disregard the facts that there are valid points on both sides of the spectrum.
