  • that's excellent, especially with no straps. i'm 5'6, i started with a 240lb max and it's taken me ages just to get to 375lbs... i'm more a bench press person lol but i won't give up. may i ask how long you've been training for?

  • I have been lifting weights for about 10 years on and off, the deadlift I have been training about 6-7 years on and off, I just hit 500 two weeks ago, I don't use straps because there not allowed in powerlifting.

  • @Jerichosquink that's cool. i don't use straps either cos i train mainly for strength, and i like to know that i can hold on to whatever weight i lift. i'm glad you're natural too, unlike most people at your level.

  • Yeah I am probably as natural as they come, I don't even take supplements currently, just a lot of hard work and dedication. I hope to pull 600 raw someday, hopefully by 2011 or 2012, I am finally using a program that is giving me great progress called the 5/3/1. If I ever do resort to supplements at some point it will probably be if I have been stalled for a long time, but until then I will see how far I can without no supplements or supportive gear, and consider those more as last resorts.

  • great stuff, you must be eating a lot :) guess there's nothing really special about food supplements, except that it's more convenient. and as for supplements like zma, it doesn't really do anything if you're already getting sufficient zinc etc in your diet... that's what i found. but that looks like an interesting program, i'm tempted to give it a go.

  • I eat enough to get by, but even my diet could be better, its just mediocre, there are a lot of foods I don't like that probably would help so much.

I think supplements are good if you just are a picky eater like me haha, just substitue if you don't get enough nutrients in a certain area. I may take supplements later down the road, but I want to save my money and see how far I can get with just pure hard work and different training programs, supplements is a last resort for me basically I guess

  • The 5/3/1 has helped me a lot on deads and squats, my deadlift actually got weaker and was down to 430, I use the 5/3/1 for 16 weeks total now i am pulling 500. Box squats I started at 365 max, after 16 weeks I hit 465, which was a 100 pound personal best, I will probably be squatting 500 raw soon without the box!

  • if your interested in the 5/3/1 program i made a tutorial on how to use it on my other account Weightlifternerd.

  • yeah thanks for that, that'll be helpful. i know what you mean. i guess i mainly just take supplements for peace of mind lol, i've always had quite a good diet so they've never performed miracles for me. keep going anyways, great stuff. i'll check out your other channel :)

  • MY GOODnESs u are so STRONG dude

  • Nicely Done! I too use school chalk for gripping. My one rep max 405. Your form was great. Remember that one rep maxes are never perfect form. As long as you get it up without severely arching your back or scraping it along the knees & quads your good. For a one rep max that was awesome dude!

  • Thanks man, 405 is a milestone nice work!

I recently did 468 in a competition, video is my most recent, looking for 500 soon.

  • Hey man, nice lift! You looked pretty solid, and didnt really have a sticking point. I think you could have easily done 470 or more. I commend you on not using straps. I used to not use them, but as I got to the higher weights, I found it so much easier to use straps. You should check out my video, as I just recently got a new max.

  • My sticking point is my bottom half, lockouts don't give me any trouble unless my grip starts to fade. If I can pick the bar up a few inchs from the ground I can usually get the rep fairly smooth, if I can not budge the bar more then 1-3 inchs then I usually fail pretty miserably. I don't use straps because I train as a powerlifter, otherwise I might use em.

I saw your video and I must say you are a monster straps or not.

  • haha thanks man. Yeah I used to have that same problem, but I just recently started doing ridiculous amounts of squats. It seemed to really help me. But as you can see from my video, I neglected traps, so my lock out isnt as strong. haha

  • Yeah I did 460 on box dead a few months ago but i've had knee trouble so idk what i can do now...

  • haha i was wondering why the chalk was yellow lol

  • yeah i used school chalk that i had at home, it seems to work just as well as powerlifting chalk ;)

  • your hands are a little too far apart bring them in a little closer. I line up by putting chalk hand prints on the bar before i lift.

  • I have been using that grip for a long time, so I will prob stick with it because it works best for me.

  • You said your grip was slipping so it really doesn't work the best for you, the reason why it was slipping is because your hands are too far apart. I weigh the same as you and i do 655, not bragging just letting you know, i know what i'm talking about. You should just at least try it out. just trying to help bro

  • I have tried a closer grip and wider grip and feel weaker doing so, I appreciate the advice but I know what works best for me.

  • I found school chalk to be a lot harder to apply. Either way, nice pull! what is your current weight?

  • 214-220 pounds.

  • I buy school chalk and put it in "the magic bullet" , you know that mini blender form the infomercial, and it comes out pure fine powder. its about the only thing its good for.

  • nice pull, only crit is that it looks like the wider mixed grip is causing you to torque a bit to the right however when you come up. I gave up pulling mixed as I was having the same kind of issues, double overhand with straps or hook fixes it

  • ya know i never noticed that before, I do sort of tilt to the right alil bit, I never feel it when i deadlift thats odd O.o

I don't like to use hooks or wraps for deadlifts, and I am better with bare hands lately, also I need to stay use to it since they don't allow straps and hooks in competition.

And I am not as strong using double overhand, but I will record more deadlifts to see if i keep doing this though.

  • Thanks for the post on how to deadlift dude

  • No problem, just looking for other fellow weightlifters ;)

  • That was nice dude! How much do you weigh?

  • says in the video info -------->

I am about 219 pounds currently, and trying to cut down and get slim, but since I am the heaviest I have ever been i may as well try to hit some big numbers before losing some muscle mass :P

  • Yeah! You can do it. Waiting for your new video

  • Fow more videos go to my other account Weightlifternerd, i dont really post that many weight lifting videos on here anymore.

  • Good form, you kept looking up which keeps your back straight.

  • Thanks man, yeah looking up helps keep your back straight and helps you keep focused ;)

  • good lift, maybe I'll do some dumbbell dead lifts next week

  • You could prob deadlift that much with one hand man ;)

  • thanks Kazmaier hopping to hit 500 eventually if I can get lucky.

  • y do u always go for weights thastare easy for u LOL i bet u can do 485-490 that shit looked easy. and a side note, if the school challk is just as good as dl chalk yd u lose ur gtip bro. anyway great job, making me feel weak =(

  • Dude I don't want to jinx myself, the weights only look easy because my lockouts are strong, but the bottom half of my lift is my weak point in most lifts, look at my 320 pound decline bench press video, I do 2 reps with decent ease, but on my third i die so bad I lift it up an inch then i die lol.

And I almost lost my grip today when I did the first rep, and my old current max was 455 are u kidding me 485 thats 30 pounds more then my old max, i dont just gain 30 more pounds on DL overnight.

  • Also when I talked about school chalk I wasn't implying that to my grip, I just said school chalk seems to be just as good as powerlifting chalk, well for me anyways, so that has nothing to with why i lost my grip, somedays I have a good grip and somedays i just don't, when I did 415 4 weeks ago my grip was alil weak too.

  • the reason you use chalk though is because that u need it for ur grip, so if u rgrip wasnt as strong with school chalk...well u know the rest. and that looks like the nicest gym ive ever seen. whats the name of it i want to look it up online lol. and yeah the bottom position is by far the toughest part fpor me on the dead lifts. then i could lock it out for a good deal easily. i dl about 330 nothing impressive even for my weight

  • Lets just stop debating on the chalk lol i don't think were getting anywhere anyways lol.

This gym is ok, but there are better, I will tell you what is through a PM, because I don;t really like to tell people where I live and what gym I go to not in videos anyways.
