@blackout12000 I just spray down the plants with water about once a week. I wipe down the glass once in a while and every few months I siphon out some of the water when it gets too full. It smells just like the forest. Frog poop becomes dirt for the plants pretty quickly.
man you dont have a build of this do you. Im trying to get good ideas for how to build really really nice looking vivs like this for all my darts. right now i just have them in basic live planted set ups but really want to go all out.
This is a beautiful setup! What size is it? Is setting up a running steam a necessity to keeping poison dart frogs? I have a planted terrarium already set up but I don't have running water in it so I have not tried to put a dart frog or frogs in it yet.
dont get red eye tree frogs i had one all they doe is sleep all day and when they wake up and if they know your looking at them they go back to sleep its not worth the $100 you pay for them.
You seem extremely knowledgable in dart frogs and your tank looks amazing. I would like to talk more in depth with you about your build. Please shoot me an email as I am going to be undertaking a build here shortly. travelwithdebo@gmail.com
Wow, after going through literally hundreds of vivarium videos on youtube, yours still stands out to me!
Quick question, did you create a false bottom for this setup? I just recently bought an exo terra habitat, and there's ample room for a false bottom before the door opening. Just wondering what your method was if you did use a false bottom. Also, how did you mount your broms on the wall?
I am deciding whether to get a pair of dart frogs or a red eyed tree frog some day, when I set up my planted vivarium. I really prefer dart frogs, but I read that they were difficult to feed. Is this true?
@lavendersfields123 Dart frogs (and probably all frogs) will only strike at moving food. My frogs eat wingless fruit flies which I raise at home. It is pretty easy to do but a little more difficult than feeding fish or a dog. These frogs have no problems eating. It is one of their favorite things to do.
@lavendersfields123 retfs are really cool but constanly eat and too big crickets could harm them my baby retf passed away due too a adult cric tht bit it leg in the knee joint and then it couldnt move or eat
@TheBettaApprentice No. Do not mix any species of dart frogs with another species of dart frogs or any other species, amphibians, reptiles, or otherwise. They will die eventually of stress.
@Xxww2riflexX You could keep two, but you may be able to get away with three since it is a twenty long. Just make sure that you have plenty of hiding spots ans they can get away from the others if needed. Normaly its ten gallons per frog.
@YamazakiSuperDM no water falls aren't harmful too the frogs. Almost all frogs require a very moist environment because they breath and drink through there skin, and if humidity drops too low they will dry out literally! Trust me I've found many amphibian raisins before they need water. i see dart frogs that will soak in water for hours if it wasn't good for them there instincts would tell them to go away from it
@Tmoney16743 you dint really need to clean it because if you have a naturalistic viv with live plants, a water feature and A good substrate it will make a natural equilibrium and the soil will break down any waste produced by the frogs but if you must clean it you will only need to once every two to four years. Every two is better
@repticular no it's not are you getting them as froglets? If so you'll want to get at least three to increase the chances of getting a breeding pair (unless of course you only want one then it doesn't matter) and then the extras can either be pared up and sold or sold individually (they're easy to sell to pet stores that specialize in reptiles and amphibians)
@SirRawlins you dont really need to keep a heater on a viv with dart frogs in them because they live on the cool forest floor in the wild. just make sure the temp dosnt drop below like 60 degrees F. at night and the light should give off enough heat in the day. you can add a heat mat to the back if you are worried about the cold nights but other than that you should be good. i have a viv just like this and it has a nice warm temp inside during the day. like a greenhouse effect. good luck!
wie hast du das gebaut? oder an welche anleitungen haste du dich eventuell gehalten, ich habe immer probleme die pumpe so einzubauen dass man sie nicht bzw.kaum sieht und totzdem gut rankommt
Im going to build an environment as good as yours. This is an absoloutely awesome vivarium. I imagine im gonna have some real fun designing a waterfall and so-on for the frogs, preening the moss and selecting plant species for them.
this species is dendrobates azureus, which produce pumiliotoxin. P. Bicolor produces batratoxin, which is 100 times more potent than the puffer fishes' teterodoxin. the poison contained in one of these babies can kill two full grown african bull elephants.
However, captive bred frogs are not poisonous, because they synthesize the poison from their diet in the wild. Although a frog can keep its poison for _years_, so even a captively kept frog that was once free, may still be very poisonous.
p.s. one more thing, if you did use silicone for the waterfall and all, what kind did you use? I tried using bath and kitchen mono ultra and it just washed away i also tried some other brand that didnt work. The other brand i tried was white in color and made everything tacky looking
Use GE's silicone II in either black or clear, you can get it at home depot its water proof just make sure you let it cure for 72 hours before introducing water
I feel bad for Mr.Frog owner here. Everyone keeps asking the same questions. If theyd just click see more coments im sure youve answered them all already :) A question I have is... How do you do the wall with plants growing out of it....foam and silicone? and if thats the case, what did you silicone to the foam that sticks so well...I dont understand... Wouldnt all this silicone be bad for the frog...I tried silicone and foam and stuck cocnut shavings to it but i failed real bad. I LUV UR VID
Hey tip for ya, is to buy a lot of rocks small and big. So you got your mats for waterfall, then you just put em up on eachother and putting your filter behind the rocks make sure that you got a little a more holes for the water :) Its simple, image what you want.
although i'm competing directly against you (exoterra contest) I have to say you did a great job on setup and everything, I like frogs as well, they tend to not mess up the cage. Best of luck man :) -John
well they require a humidity of 85%+ and a waterfall is a good way of raising it - it doesn't have to replicate their natural environments aesthetically, just in terms of health and living requirements.
tbh every dart frog keeper has humidity very high otherwise the frogs would die. therefore, the addition of a waterfall would prove beneficial as it would increase humidity. if it was a common fact among dart frog keepers that the waterfalls did harm to the frogs then why would there be waterfalls in any dart vivariums anyway?
I have a 40breeder tank which was previously used for turtles which are now relocated to a larger 150gallon tank. But this tank Iam going to completely clean it and put boiling water in it to kill any germs and such. But I like poison dart frogs and toads. BUT Iam not planning on keeping them together. I just dont know if I can keep more than 4dart frogs in that tank size. Iam planing on heavily planting it. I want to use a waterfal, fogger, rain systems. So yeah I want live plants in it too.
Typically people go with 10 gallons of tank space per frog. But some species don't do well in groups, such as azureus. In the 40 you could keep a group of 4-5 leucomelas.
Hey personal question. Do you think I could put like the blue poison darts, with the bumble bee darts, the green darts and the red darts? Like females of course.
it is best not to mix species of darts even if they are the same sex. They are territorial and have slightly different habitat needs. So, no I dont think you can put them all in the same tank together.
How is that a personal question? A personal question would be, perhaps, "I noticed in the shower at the gym that your left testicle seemed a bit distended. Do you want me to call my doctor?....".
these are only poisonous in the wild...the diet they eat in the wild is toxic or something(not quite sure) but if you get them captive, then they are safe
nope there not. they only become poisonous when they jungle insects. so when you keep it in a home tank it you should feed it flies as crickets and beetles will let the frog build up its toxins
oh ok well sound like you know more about this type of frog than i do some im not gonna complain cause its true what you said about the toxins,i know alot about the red eye tree frogs more so yea....i got 5 of them
the grand total would be nearing $1000 including the sexed pair of frogs. It could certainly be done for much less....but then it wouldnt look as good.
The blue frogs are poison and if you eat them it wont taste good. If you touch it you will be poisoned. Blue frogs live in the rain forest and I like the color blue. I learned all about frogs in the rainforest at school. I am 7 yrs old. Thanks for your video.
Very nice tank, I have riccia moss and java moss, I also have java fern (to let them climb out of water features) but I wondered what the larger plants were and how you made the waterfall?
nope. the frogs dont really need the lights. the lights are more for the plants. i use 6500K compact spiral bulbs by GE. they work well and keep the green growth very lush.
Wow 5 stars. I had no idea there was this entire vivarium sub culture. Especially the people that just have plants in them, kinda lame. But the frogs look happy so keep up the good work
hey, i am looking at getting a dart frog comunity in a 45galon exoterra tank, i got almost everything figured but i got a few questions, r the blue ones easy? and how many do u recon a tank my size could hold? any recomended species?
leggomygecko- Don't mix dart frogs with other dart frogs, stick to one type of frog per tank. Your tank could hold about 9 D. azures (the blue ones) which are fairly easy to take care of. I recommend that you get D. leucomelas as your first dart frog as they are the hardier of all dart frogs.
Actually D. Azureus will not do well in groups....the females become agressive and will stress others to death. Keep them only in pairs unless raised as froglets. In this case you could keep 2 males with one female.
They don't do well in groups, I guess I should have said that- but it is possible to house them together (As long as you are willing to break up the occasional fight) Though I still totally recomend the leucomelas... (By the way... I have a friend who created a 70 gallon tank for his azures and they haven't killed each other yet)
You can keep more then two together, In fact I'm building a viv for 5 D. leucomelas right now. Sure their might be some fighting but you can keep them together.
I use distilled or RO (reverse osmosis) water...these waters dont have minerals in them which cause hard water spots on the glass. Certianly don't use tap water.
Definetly one of the best set-ups I've seen for just about anything.

well they require a humidity of 85%+ and a waterfall is a good way of raising it - it doesn't have to replicate their natural environments aesthetically, just in terms of health and living requirements.

thats the pont
the waterfall creates too much wetness, thus increasing bacteria and doing more harm to the frogs than other things.
the habitat of these frogs is surprisingly rather dryish.

tbh every dart frog keeper has humidity very high otherwise the frogs would die. therefore, the addition of a waterfall would prove beneficial as it would increase humidity. if it was a common fact among dart frog keepers that the waterfalls did harm to the frogs then why would there be waterfalls in any dart vivariums anyway?
rafarafa72 2 years ago
cuz a lot of owners still want ot have a nice looking vivarium that resembles a bit of rainforest in their opinion.
it is a common fact among elder ppl and veterans so to speak, which are still a minority.

WHAT KIND OF MOSS IS IT?

Nice cage, frogs and waterfall!

what kind of moss is that?
what lighting are you using?
daumite 2 years ago
mostly riccia and java moss...not technically a moss. They are aquatic plants that can grow terresterally in moist environments.

arent poison dart frogs illegal in the U.S.A ?
nickprs7 2 years ago
hell no lol
tetramincolor2000 2 years ago
there not? this pet store owner told me they were, plus i never see them for sale
nickprs7 2 years ago
nope there not. they only become poisonous when they jungle insects. so when you keep it in a home tank it you should feed it flies as crickets and beetles will let the frog build up its toxins
tetramincolor2000 2 years ago
oh ok well sound like you know more about this type of frog than i do some im not gonna complain cause its true what you said about the toxins,i know alot about the red eye tree frogs more so yea....i got 5 of them
nickprs7 2 years ago
Like everything else including permits of marijuana and fully automatic weapons, it depends on the state you live in.

nice tank setup, how much did it cost you?
ezname1234 2 years ago
the grand total would be nearing $1000 including the sexed pair of frogs. It could certainly be done for much less....but then it wouldnt look as good.
holidayhanson 2 years ago
The blue frogs are poison and if you eat them it wont taste good. If you touch it you will be poisoned. Blue frogs live in the rain forest and I like the color blue. I learned all about frogs in the rainforest at school. I am 7 yrs old. Thanks for your video.
sweetliliana 2 years ago
actually if you touch them it wont poison you but if you touch them and then rub the saliva on your eye or mouth then you will be poisoned
killerdelivery 2 years ago
they r only poisonous because of an ant they eat in the wild in captivity they lose their poisons.

Very nice tank, I have riccia moss and java moss, I also have java fern (to let them climb out of water features) but I wondered what the larger plants were and how you made the waterfall?

Is this an Exo-Terra viv?
If so, what are the dimensions please.

do you know a good website that shows you how to build an intricate terrarium like yours?

do they need any special lights like uv
dsjoes 2 years ago
nope. the frogs dont really need the lights. the lights are more for the plants. i use 6500K compact spiral bulbs by GE. they work well and keep the green growth very lush.
holidayhanson 2 years ago
Wow 5 stars. I had no idea there was this entire vivarium sub culture. Especially the people that just have plants in them, kinda lame. But the frogs look happy so keep up the good work

hey, i am looking at getting a dart frog comunity in a 45galon exoterra tank, i got almost everything figured but i got a few questions, r the blue ones easy? and how many do u recon a tank my size could hold? any recomended species?
leggomygecko 2 years ago
leggomygecko- Don't mix dart frogs with other dart frogs, stick to one type of frog per tank. Your tank could hold about 9 D. azures (the blue ones) which are fairly easy to take care of. I recommend that you get D. leucomelas as your first dart frog as they are the hardier of all dart frogs.
Good luck with your vivarium!
P.S. Keep me updated with what you do!
DartFrogFinatic 2 years ago
Actually D. Azureus will not do well in groups....the females become agressive and will stress others to death. Keep them only in pairs unless raised as froglets. In this case you could keep 2 males with one female.
holidayhanson 2 years ago
They don't do well in groups, I guess I should have said that- but it is possible to house them together (As long as you are willing to break up the occasional fight) Though I still totally recomend the leucomelas... (By the way... I have a friend who created a 70 gallon tank for his azures and they haven't killed each other yet)
DartFrogFinatic 2 years ago
u can keep some 2gether
johntrierweiler 2 years ago
You can keep more then two together, In fact I'm building a viv for 5 D. leucomelas right now. Sure their might be some fighting but you can keep them together.
DartFrogFinatic 2 years ago
leucs do well together- but keep the group male heavy as females fight

what kind of water should i use in a vivarium? i know not tap water but should i use dechlorinated or distilled water or what should i use?
irishkreem 3 years ago
I use distilled or RO (reverse osmosis) water...these waters dont have minerals in them which cause hard water spots on the glass. Certianly don't use tap water.
